Indonesia is a mineral-rich country, with significant deposits of coal, natural gas, petroleum, nickel, copper, tin, gold and bauxite, among others. It was the world’s fifth-largest country with 557.8Mt of coal production in 2018, up by 20.9% from 2017. This was mainly due to increase in production at the country’s major mines, including Delta Dunia Makmur, Bumi Resources, Bukit Asam and Adaro Energy. The demand for coal within the country mainly comes from domestic power industry, which accounts for 67.2% of the overall coal consumption in 2018. By the end of 2023, an addition of 11-12GW of coal fired power plant capacity is expected to boost overall coal consumption, which is expected to reach 135.3Mt by 2023. Indonesia’s coal increased to 343.1Mt in 2018 from 319.1Mt in 2017. The country’s mining industry is governed by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal.
