Review of R.U.R. by Karel Čapek – Dystopian Books Review
The play begins with a girl named Helena who is the daughter of a president of Major Industrial Power. She visits a factory of Rossum’s Universal Robots, developed on the Island. There she meets the General Manager of this factory, Domin.
It was 1932 when he discovered a chemical that contained protoplasm. Rossum tried to develop a dog and a man from this chemical, but he failed. Meanwhile, his nephew came to see him, and they argue about this chemical.
Young Rossum locks up senior Rossum and started experimenting with his monsters. He built factories and make thousands of robots. At the time of the play, which is 2000, they can find robots anywhere and against a cheap price.
Domin confesses his love for Helena and forces her to get engaged to him. Part II of the play starts where 10 years pass by and they notice Helena and her nurse Nana talk about a reduction in human births. The economy of the world became robot-based. Helena meets Dr Gall’s robot experiment, Radius. Gall explains to her about his experimental Robot named Helena. Helena secretly burns the formula for creation of robots. Robots revolt and reach Rossum’s island.
In the third part of the play, the human characters started believing that the universality of robots is not a danger to society. Robots occupy the factories, and Helena reveals that she burnt the formula required to make new robots. After these events, robots kill all the humans except the chief engineer of the company, Alquist.
Robot Primus and Robotess Helena develop human feelings for each other. Alquist threatens to dissect Primus. Helena begs him to use her instead of Primus. Alquist comes to realise that these two robots actually presents Adam and Eve, and he gives control of the world to these two.

The play describes the side effects of extreme modernisation and technological innovation on human existence. The narrative describes an interesting and informative account of human-induced mechanical development. I give the story a 7.9 out of 10 because of the interesting and complex narrative the book presents.
This novel presents one of the best Polish books published in 1924. The book became popular after it combined dystopian and catastrophic fiction genres. The author bases the novel on an upcoming world end after the occurrence of two natural disasters. The civilization on earth ends after the first natural disaster, and the second natural disaster leads to the end of the planet. The inhabitants of the planet started these tragedies after the development of human-induced technological advancements. The human nature of imperialism and barbarism and every growing machinery led to these disasters. The author bases the novel on dystopian events after World War I.

This novel receives my rating of 6.9 out of 10 because the author applies two unique writing styles in the narrative. The novel focuses on the end of the world after humankind developed a series of technological advances. It covers deep topics using a fascinating description. It remains a good choice for the dystopian reader. Would I re-read this novel? No. Am I glad I read it? Yes.
