Engineering is a degree which involves the implementation of science to solve the problems and create a valuable and enriched society for human well being. That being said, the practices in the engineering profession are bonded by some professional ethics and responsibilities. The codes of ethics have evolved and are now invoked as professional engineering licensure.

An engineer is in a position to understand the human issues and problems and solve them with his scientific approach. So, his processes have a direct impact on humanity, and so being empathetic and courteous is imbibed in his profession. An engineer inclines to be more empathic and human with the study of ethics.

Violation of such ethics leads to several tragic engineering failures. This may endanger human life and threatened public welfare. It is observed that professional corporate offices experience several scandals that involve unethical and illegal practices.  Addressing this requirement of engineering ethics, engineering educators came to conclude that the development of ethical behavioral practices is a key competency in future engineers. And a new discipline, engineering ethics emerged as an integral part of engineering education.

This topic incorporates the study of making a value judgment, understanding what is ethically significant, and thereby assessing the impact of their actions.

The basic moral rules in the engineering practice, define the mandatory, forbidden or permitted acts or course of actions. Engineering students are urged to clearly understand and acquire these concepts, which contrives as an integral part of their developing professional character. Inspired by these, many engineering colleges effort made to introduce ethics case studies into required undergraduate engineering courses.

Researches prove that factors such as students’ gender, personality age, work experience, nationality, and cultural backgrounds play a significant role in ethical decisions. It is also observed that work experience imbibes more ethical values than education, as working people are exposed to more ethically challenging situations.

Hope to see more engineers with better professional ethics in the coming years.
