Coronavirus: Facts and Fiction

We’re not even out of the bushfire season and now the coronavirus has entered Australia. It has been a nightmare for healthcare in our country. It is somewhat of a relief that a form of protection from the bushfire smoke that has plagued us over the last couple of months is also a partial form of protection for the coronavirus.

Now, the same masks that you may have used during the bushfires can now be used to help provide partial protection against the coronavirus. What we advise to people who own the masks we sell - particularly the Dr Hoffmann’s Bacteria and Asthma Protection Mask - be mindful that they are best used to reduce the potential risk of infection from other people who might have the coronavirus. In addition to this, there are also a number of other disinfectants and preventative aids that can be used to help you during this period.

What is the coronavirus?

To reiterate what we have already said in our previous article: the coronavirus is a respiratory virus that is very similar to SARS. The disease is able to be spread from one human to another. Symptoms of the coronavirus may include:

  • Traditional flue like symptoms
  • A headache
  • Sore throat
  • A fever
  • Runny nose
  • Shortness of breath

Whilst there is a lot of panic surrounding the rampant spread of the virus it is important to realise that people in the streets may exhibit these symptoms but it does not mean that they are ill with the coronavirus. It is very easy to be frightened of those around us who may seem like they could be potential sufferers but try to remember that it’s best to reserve judgement. Take a step back before assuming that the person coughing beside you has been infected with coronavirus.

How can you prevent infection from the coronavirus?

Whilst there are currently no vaccines for the coronavirus at the time of writing, there are a number of prevention aids that can assist you from coronavirus infection. One of the key points of this virus is that, as far as we know, it is a human to human contact virus. As such, maintaining good hand hygiene and smart preventative measures are the best way to protect yourself against coronavirus infection. Below are some of the products that we believe can make this much easier.

Masks:

As we have mentioned in the beginning of the article, masks can only reduce the potential risk of infection. The most effective thing about a mask, aside from peace of mind, is the fact that they cover the face from potential oral infection from sneezes or coughs.

Our recommendation for a mask is the Dr Hoffmann P2 anti-bacteria mask. The mask is a certified P2 mask that offers protection against P2.5 particles that are present in bushfire smoke but also helps to reduce the risk of infection from viruses. This mask comes with a pair of carbon filters that can be washed with cold water once every 2 weeks and then disposed 2 weeks later. This allows a single mask with 2 filters to be worn for a total of 2 months before needing new filters.

Hand Sanitisers:

Hospital grade hand sanitisers are excellent for removing foreign bacteria from your hands as well as providing germ protection. Given the amount of hand to hand contact that happens throughout a day it’s wise to take the time to use hand sanitisers more frequently in order to prevent the possible risk of infection.

Our preferred brand are the Aquim Hand Sanitisers and the Antibacterial Hand Sanitisers. This brand is a hospital grade sanitiser that provides a cool, refreshing gel that helps to remove germs and keep hands clean.

Alcoholic Wipes and Pads:

Using antiseptic alcohol wipes and pads are ideal for sterilising surfaces or wounds. Wipes can clean a variety of surfaces in order to remove potential germs. Pads can clean wounds or potential sites of infection by clearing away the bacteria accumulating near the surface of the skin.

We recommend using Rediwipes Isoprpyl Alcohol Wipes and Alcohol Prep Pad. The chemical mixture in these products are very effective at reducing the risk of infection from a variety of germs and viruses.

To make it easier on those looking for disinfectants online we have bundled our recommended wipes, pads and a bottle of sanitiser together to help you keep your hygene up during this coronavirus period.

How to manage your stress against the coronavirus:

One last suggestion we have is to be mindful of the hysteria surrounding the coronavirus. Yes, there are reports of the vast spread of the virus but remember that maintaining your health, good eating and managing stress during this period is just as important. And in order to manage your stress it is also a good idea to be mindful of the fact from the fiction of the coronavirus.

Conclusion

Overall, the best thing that we can do is remain vigilant, stay up to date on the virus and be mindful that not everyone with a common cold is a potential coronavirus patient. The products that we have recommended are still great for improving your protection against the risks of infection.
