Reasons Why Professors Flitwick and Sprout Were the Most Underrated Teachers in Harry Potter Series

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was Harry Potter’s favorite place to be. The castle hosted many students at the same time, and the teachers were never enough. The movie (and the books), consistently introduce to the audience several teachers to the audience who are experts in different subjects. Dumbledore, Snape, and McGonagall are the teachers with maximum spotlight throughout the plot. Still, there have been other vital professors too, such as Remus Lupin, Dolores Umbridge (it is painful to call her a teacher and not a devil’s spawn), Poppy Pomfrey, Gilderoy Lockhart, and many others. But some professors and their contribution towards the overall story were woefully underrated. Two such names are Professors Sprout and Flitwick. Here is why.

Flitwick Was a Half Goblin

The movie never addressed the possible reason for Flitwick’s short height. The movie fans just assumed he was a little man, but that is not the case. The books explain that he is a half-goblin, though he does not look like it. Given his mixed blood lineage, it is highly likely that the wizards did not see him as an equal and treated them like muggle-born. Despite being looked down upon by his people, Flitwick bagged a professor’s position in one of the best wizard schools in the world, which he was always proud of.

Sprout Was Hilarious

Teachers at Hogwarts are well known for the unexpected little snarky jokes they make at their students during classes. But in the case of Pomona Sprout, she is naturally hilarious and has a better sense of humor than a lot of her coworkers. We saw one such instance when she casually said that the students were allowed to use curse words liberally if a Venomous Tentacula bit them. Students do not generally expect their professors to be so chill and funny about possibly fatal contingencies.

Flitwick Is One of the Most Intelligent Among His Peers

Right after being enrolled as a student in Hogwarts, Flitwick did not take a lot of time to establish his intellectual supremacy amongst fellow students. The books say that the Sorting Hat found it challenging to select between Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. It is safe to assume that his high intellect was what made the Sorting Hat unable to find a perfect fit easily.

Sprout Teamed up With Neville Longbottom

The final chapters of the book, and the last scenes of the movie, informed the viewers that Neville ended up as a professor of Herbology at Hogwarts. Since there was no mention of Professor Sprout quitting or retiring, we can be sure that the two work together in the department. Back in the day, she may have made fun of the clumsy demeanor of Neville, but she did not let that turn into judgment and probably was very proud of her student now working side by side with her.

Flitwick Taught Harry’s Parents Too

Looking at the actor playing the part of Flitwick in the movie, it was apparent that he was an older man. But the movie never hints at what the professor’s age may be. Some may find it very interesting to know that Professor Flitwick has been in the school’s staff for decades. To explain better, his students include Harry’s parents James and Lily Potter, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, and Severus Snape. It must invoke mixed feelings in Flitwick to see his students become his peers.

Sprout Used Her Knowledge of Herbology to Fight in the Battle of Hogwarts

Professor Sprout was head of her department, so it should not come as a shock that she was an expert in Herbology. She was so well-informed of her area that she decided to use Herbology instead of a wand to help win the Battle of Hogwarts. She used various dangerous and toxic plants to fend off Death Eaters. Sadly, the movie did not find it necessary to dedicate some screen time to it.

Flitwick Was Lenient Than Most of the Other Professors

Like Professor Sprout, Flitwick was also a compassionate teacher towards his students. He doesn’t resort to detentions or respective house point deductions. Instead, he prefers giving students more homework as a form of punishment. He is always approachable during examinations and helps the kids as much as he could.

Sprout Saved Her Students From Being Petrified

In Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets, Ginny Weasley mistakenly lets Lord Voldemort’s snake, Nagini, loose. As a result, a lot of students encounter the snake, and whenever they look at its eyes through a reflective surface, they are left petrified (a state of unconsciousness where the body is frigid and unreactive). Professor Sprout was the key to saving all these helpless students. She grew enough Mandrakes to create the Mandrake Restorative Draught to treat all the affected and bring them back to normalcy.

The books by J.K. Rowling did better justice to the two characters and gave them their due credit, but the same is not valid for the movies. The films pushed their roles to near irrelevance and failed to present that the characters were essential and good.
