5 reasons why your readers are not sticking around

Everyone who knows how to write aspires to have people drooling over their writings full of emotion and meaning. While some might wish to influence the masses towards new ideas and acceptance towards various movements like gay pride, for instance, there are some who just like pouring out their emotions and want people to relate to it. However, sometimes no matter how good of a writer you are – you just don’t get as much attention as Stephanie Meyers or J.K.Rowling.

Why is that? I know even I asked myself this question; over and over. I kept beating myself up thinking how exactly should I approach my target audiences without sounding desperate for a sale. Before moving ahead let me just say that this blog post can be used by book writers as well as online writers. While online writers or bloggers might be a bit ahead than those writing books because they connect with people digitally already, you are both at the same level more or less.

So why don’t your readers stick to your amazing content?

  1. Difficulty Level

Maybe your sentence structure is just too much for them too read? The best way to go about it is to make shorter sentences – this way a reader won’t get confused while reading a sentence over and over nor would the sentence’s syntactic structure be in shambles.

Moreover, try not using words that people or readers might have to search the definitions of. No! We do not want to read a dictionary just to understand what you mean!

If your target audience is that of particular readers – as in those who would have as high a vocabulary as you … just use layman English. There’s a reason not everyone has read the classics.

Point is to make sure your readability level is not difficult for the readers whether online or book ones. If your plea is that you add a mini dictionary or ‘glossary’ at the end of your content – trust me when I say it ain’t good enough!

  1. Publicity(?)

Make sure you are well publicized before you go about putting a huge fortune into your website or publications. Unless you are writing at a high DA website or being published via a good renowned publishing house … no one would care what you wrote. In short, before putting everything at the mercy of others – have mercy on yourself and publicize yourself perfectly. You are your brand before your writing. Make sure you make a page on all the social media sites like Facebook, Instagram etc. connect to readers all around the world and increase your target audience alongside the potential one. And for that purpose you will be needing a stable internet connection and Spectrum customer service could be of a great help in this scenario.

  1. Length

If your content is too long even for a writer than trust me – it really is too long. Your work needs to be dulce et utile – sweet and useful! I remember reading “Message from NAM” and gahhh I hated the ending especially since the book was too long. One of the lead characters keep dying and another one kept replacing him – it was so frustrating!

If you don’t want someone saying the same for your writing and I am sure you don’t – maybe recheck the length of your content?

  1. Slow or no results

Sometimes people like searching for your content on a browser before investing actual time into reading your stuff directly. So make sure your website is not that slow. If it is too slow and you think it is ‘worth waiting for’ – only you know that, dear, the readers don’t even know you! Why would they wait for it to load?

Moreover, sometimes authors don’t even consider promoting their works on the internet – if you won’t do that … no one would know what’s your work about or even if it is worth their bucks. Therefore, its best to have a website made for your work and to make sure its loading speed is fast enough as to not kill someone’s interest in it.

  1. No Strategy

If you have a bad or no marketing strategy to help you reach your goal of being a great writer – chances are you might just not succeed. Make sure you work out a marketing strategy before or alongside to make sure that your efforts would not go to waste. You could go for different kinds of marketing campaigns or just focus on one depending on your work. For instance, if you are writing a book for the elderly and you think they might not be active on Facebook – try advertising or posters to reach out to them. Another way to do so is to go for digital marketing and tell young people that this book would be a perfect holiday gift to their grandparents.

Conclusion

Before we end it, one more thing for you to keep in mind is to make sure you don’t mislead your target audience. If your readers won't trust you – they will never come back to buy your books or even visit your website. Moreover, they might just tell others what a waste of time your content was for them and thus others should save their time and money, both.
