Tenet: Did Christopher Nolan Just Give Us First the Black James Bond

The idea of having a Black James Bond has always been a controversial one. Whenever there have been such speculations, a section of the internet gets infuriated for no apparent reason. Even when great Black replacements like Idris Elba are suggested to replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond, there is always disagreement and dispute. It seems that some people are just too inflexible in their view of Bond as a white man, which is disappointing since there are so many great candidates who can replace Daniel Craig.

But people who were rooting for a Black Bond might have gotten one without even realizing it. Tenet director Christopher Nolan gave John David Washington the main role in his movie in which the protagonist tries to stop the threat of nuclear apocalypse which somewhat sounds like a mission Bond would go on.

Nolan has always in the past been touted as a possible Bond film director since he is quite aware of the genre. There are a lot of similarities between the Bond and the protagonist of Tenet to overlook. The way in which both of the characters attend to their business is quite alike. They both travel around the world on high-stakes missions in which they put everything on the line for the sake of their task.

Even the antagonist resembles the typical archetype of a Bond villain only difference being the fact that Sator (Tenet’s antagonist) wants to teach a lesson about climate change. He wants to make society pay for its ignorance by ending it. Just like Bond would often romance femmes’ Fatales, Tenet’s antagonist too romances antagonist’s estranged wife. Interestingly they also have the same sense of style as the protagonist wears dapper suits that can easily rival Bond’s choice of clothes.

Then there are also the similarities in the twists and turns that often leaves viewers perplexed. Much like Bond, the protagonist too has allies that seem to be shifty and deceptive. This puts the viewers in a spot and engages them even more with the plot. This works the same way in both Bond movies as well as Tenet. When it comes to weapons, Tenet’s protagonist too has tons of cool gadgets to choose from like time stiles and inverted weapons which are quite similar to the ones used by Bond himself.

Watching Tenet while mindful of its similarities with Bond movies does give the impression that Nolan might have been inspired to create the protagonist to act and behave in many ways like the real James Bond. The protagonist’s characterization is a little too similar to that of Bond, and it seems even if we might not officially have a Black Bond so far, but we know where to look until we get one.
