Alternative to Resetting the PC on Factory Settings

Whenever anything goes wrong in the desktop or some functions don’t work as they used to, factory reset turns out to be the first option to resolve the issue. Based on the computer brand you use, your desktop might have some unnecessary junk files and customizations. This junk is commonly known as ‘bloatware.’ After a specific time limit, every electronic item, including a computer, starts to work slowly, and its latency rate increases. After experiencing all the troubles with the desktop, the factory reset seems like the best option. But you can go without it, and try different methods to resolve the error.

When Do You Need to Reset Your Computer?

Before setting your mind for choosing the factory reset option, make sure that you know why you want to reset the device. The Factory Reset option is necessary when you’re trying to sell your PC or want to get it back to its original state. However, this option will not resolve any hardware issues. You will need to repair or replace these components inside your computer. Even if you are experiencing some technical problems with your computer, reset is not the best option to choose from.

There could be various reasons for the problems arising in your desktop, but the first thing you should do to resolve the issue is to go to the Settings or press Windows + I keys together to open Settings. Then, click on Update & Security and select Troubleshoot. Now, click on Additional Troubleshooters. From this section, you can target specific problems, and Windows will try to fix it automatically.

Why Not Factory Reset?

Factory Reset takes your computer to the state it was in before hitting the stores. But you may not know that even after the factory settings, your computer cannot go back to an entirely clean slate. The first time you boot your new pre-built computer, your device enters a system with factory settings. Despite running on Windows, the installation doesn’t remain the same as it was when you had built the computer and installed the operating system yourself. And, there are various factors and reasons involved in it, but it mainly happens to benefit the manufacturer or the company. Due to this, you might as well find some pre-installed programs on your desktop.

These invasive programs usually get the best out of your system. Most of the time, these programs also turn out to be bloatware that consumes your valuable drive space which can possess a security threat to your desktop. Although a factory reset will remove all programs and data, you added, but it’s not an ideal option. Thus, we have brought you the methods for eliminating bloatware and resetting your computer.

Remove Bloatware

One of the best ways to start from a fresh system install is to remove any bloatware that comes with your system. Mind that it will not remove any security vulnerability, but it will help you get rid of the apparent junk. To do so, open the Settings of your computer and click on Apps. This option will bring you a list of all the apps installed on your computer. From the list, you can select anything and click on Uninstall to remove it. Make sure that you do not remove any drivers or system critical utilities as it will un-stabilize your device.

Reset Your Computer

Windows 10 has it easy to reset their computers in a few easy steps. But you have to choose if you want to keep all your files, keep only pre-installed apps, or wipe everything. Although your computer can automatically take the backup, it’s better to handle the data backup manually.

To begin the resetting procedure on your computer, go to Settings and click on Update & Security. Then, select Recovery. Under the ‘Reset This PC’ section, click on Get started. You will be left with two options. i.e., keep my files, and remove everything.

Keep My Files

This option will reinstall Windows 10 OS, remove apps & drivers you had installed, and revert settings you changed. But you have to decide how you want to reinstall Windows. If you’re unsure, it would be best to select Cloud download. Then, click on Change Settings to determine if you’re going to restore the Pre-installed Apps. We would recommend you not to restore them as they may contain bloatware in them. Then, click on Confirm followed by Next, and proceed through the wizard.

Remove Everything

Choose this option only if you want to delete your data, apps, drivers, and settings. But first, you have to decide how you want to reinstall Windows. Select Cloud Download if you’re unsure of the option. Then, click Change Settings and switch on the toggle for Clean Data and Delete Files from All Drives. In case you are selling the computer and its drives, both of these should be enabled for security reasons. Now, click on Confirm followed by Next. Then, follow the steps appearing on your computer screen.

Now, you have a better solution than the factory reset. Follow all the steps in this guide carefully to avoid removing any data from your desktop.
