Is Zaheer From the Legend of Korra Inspired by Bane?

Superficially, it would appear that the Legend of Korra and the Dark Knight Rises have nothing in common. Even though this conclusion is wrong, it won’t be right to blame anyone for thinking that. They have a completely different world altogether; there’s no doubt about that. The Legend of Korra the sequel to the series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which was made with a young audience in mind. The Dark Knight Rises, on the other hand, is for a much more mature audience. In the former, we look at a young kid’s struggle to become the Avatar and fulfill all duties that come later, while in the latter, we see the courage and grit that it takes to become a billionaire vigilante.

However, it would be a mistake to think that the two stories have nothing in common. It is quite easy to find a number of similarities in the otherwise contrasting worlds if one looks closely. Both deal with the complexities of human relationships and morality, which sometimes takes a very dark turn. We usually come across antagonists on anime, shows, and movies who want to do evil things with no strong storyline backing up their story. The Legend of Korra and Dark Knight Rises both have antagonists who have their complicated moral code, which has evolved from their experiences throughout their lifetime.

The Legend of Korra in their third season introduced us to a villain, which was quite like the antagonist of the movie. Zaheer and Bane both are idealists who make the viewers rethink their simplistic worldview of heroes and villains. Even in their appearance, there are so many similarities as they are both bald and muscular. They also make a public appearance to address the masses – Zaheer over the PSA system and Bane – at the football game. Zaheer also killed Earth queen while Bane killed the neutron bomb’s inventor, both of whom were important characters. Even in their public address, they talk about the same thing, i.e., giving power back to people.

If we look at their intentions closely, we observe that both are driven by a deep desire to oppose the elites who are oppressing the common people. But even though they have noble motives, their actions in pursuit of the greater good are unjustifiable. Their resolve is so strong that they stop at nothing to achieve what they want and even almost kill their relative protagonists. The Legends of Korra’s season, where Zaheer was first introduced, was aired in 2014, two years after the release of The Dark Knight Rises, so it won’t be wrong to assume that there is a chance that he might have been influenced by Bane to some degree. Even if that is not the case, both have created great villains that leave a lasting impression on the viewers.
