The newly introduced iPhone 12 Pro feature uses LiDAR technology to enable the Magnifier app to measure people’s distance in a specific range. But, the users will need to follow some necessary setup process.

In the latest iOS 14.2 update release, Apple has introduced the LiDAR feature in iPhone 12 Pro. The people can use the newly introduced feature to detect how far they are from each other. While the newly introduced feature is great for the visually impaired people, it is also extremely useful in this ongoing scenario where keeping physical distance has become part and parcel of our lives to protect ourselves. It helps visually impaired people as they can find out where objects and humans are around them. The feature is available on iPhone models that have the in-built scanner hardware as it is associated with LiDAR.

LiDAR or Light Detection And Ranging have borrowed the pattern from a similar radar technology. Radar uses radio waves when it comes to measuring distance in a specific range. On the contrary, LiDAR technology uses lasers or lights to measure the distance between the objects. The light at a particular wavelength operates a safe intensity for the human eye that can’t be seen. The first Apple devices that gained necessary hardware for LiDAR were 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro released in the year 2020; however, developers used it mostly. The Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro are coming packed with LiDAR; it is expected that the technology will be used widely and more often.

The latest update brought by Apple to iOS 14.2 has added the ability to detect people’s distance within a certain distance. LiDAR can detect distances up to five meters a little over sixteen feet. It has made recognizing the span of 6 feet relatively easy recommended by the authorities during the pandemic. While LiDAR is capable of operating even in darkness, the newly introduced feature of object detection has been integrated with machine learning allowing it to recognize humans as opposed to bookcases or trees or some other objects. The recently introduced feature can only operate to its optimum when it gets inputs from the camera. Therefore, using it for security purposes is not looking practical currently. The users can find the Magnifier app feature, but the company has not yet updated its support article detailing anything about the LiDAR feature.

LiDAR People Detection: How to Use it?

The users can only use the newly introduced feature, People Detection, to have the Apple device integrated with the LiDAR scanner. Such devices include the iPhone 12 Pro, Pro Max, and the iPad Pro models of 2020, 11, and 12.9 inches. In the future, ARKit may use the standard techniques of augmented reality to provide such information. The users who have the device with LiDAR integration can open the Magnifier app’s feature to try it.

The users can swipe down at the right to find the Magnifier app in the Control Panel, but the app is not there by default. Further, you can add the Magnifier app in the  Settings app by using the options in the Control Panel. However, it is also available as the app in iOS 14, but it will require you to enable the magnifier within the features, Accessibility. Once you allow it, you can find the App Library’s Magnifier app and add it to Home Screen whenever you desire.
