What is a Standing Desk Used For?

Standing desks are the new kids on the block when it comes to the office space. You’ve probably heard all of the fuss about it, or maybe you’ve seen your coworkers make the switch.

Either way, it can leave some people feeling baffled as to what the point is. After all, don’t you want to be comfortable while you’re getting through your nine to five?

While that is true, standing desks are more than just a comfort or novelty choice. It’s all to do with your health and physical wellbeing.

As an office worker, the chances are that you’ve experienced some nasty back pain during your life. Whether it be struggling to stand up for an extended amount of time on a holiday, or feeling some stinging pains when you’re trying to do some manual labor, back pain is more common for those that spend lots of time sitting at a desk.

This brings us back to the question, what is a standing desk used for? Well, a standing desk is used to combat all of these pains and aches, and allow your body to get back to a state that you can be comfortable in.

What is a Standing Desk Used For? It’s All About Health

When you’re sitting at a desk, your spine undergoes a natural curve. Combine this with the added pressure that ends up on your back, and you have a long-term problem.

That not even to mention the issues that your neck might face when it’s bent over a keyboard looking at a screen all day.

When you’re using a standing desk, that bend and pressure are eliminated from the equation. Your spine is extended and straight, as you would expect it would be when standing up. On top of that, you’re less likely to strain your neck trying to get into a comfortable position to type.

It’s not just relieving the pressure on your body that standing desks are good for, though. You get a relatively large amount of other physical and mental benefits, too.

For example, standing for your nine to five, as opposed to sitting, is going to allow your body to burn an extra 1000 calories per day. Granted, that number changes from person to person, but that’s a safe average.

Not only is this extra calorie burn going to help with weight loss, but it is also going to combat a bunch of health defects that you might experience in your later years.

Heart disease is the one that springs straight to mind. In a series of studies carried out by researchers, excessive sitting times have been linked to people’s likelihood of suffering from some heart-related defect.

When you’re working at a standing desk and burning those calories, your heart is going to be strengthened, affording you less worry about things like heart disease as you age.

That calorie burn is also going to help your body fight off diabetes. After lunch, office workers that sit down record a significantly higher blood sugar level than those that stand.

It’s Not Just Physical

Standing desks aren’t just about the physical benefits, although those are the most significant selling points.

You’re also going to notice some major changes to your headspace once you adjust to standing instead of sitting in the office.

Workers that use standing desks report feeling less fatigue in the office. This might seem counter-intuitive because you’re burning more calories, and so should be more tired, but it’s going to be keeping your body active and not letting it fall asleep.

As well as less fatigue, standing is also going to boost your mood. Office workers that stand tend to suffer from far less work-induced stress than their sitting counterparts, as well as report being happier in work.

All of this combines for a work shift that results in you being happier, healthier, and more productive.

What Standing Desk Should I Buy?

So, with all of the benefits of a standing desk out on the table, you might be wondering which type of desk you should buy.

The market is flooded with standing desks, all of which are nearly identical to one another, which can leave someone at a loss as to what to buy.

However, there is one series of desks that is a cut above the rest. The SmartDesk Home and SmartDesk Premium

These two desks feature a mechanized motor mechanic that allows you to adjust the height of them at the press of a button. This means that you can adjust the height of them easily, as well as switch between sitting and standing whenever you fancy.

Wrap Up

Hopefully, this has helped you understand what a standing desk is used for. You get a healthier and happier lifestyle that allows you to do more work and feel better doing it.
