When Do Babies Start Talking?

If there is one time in your baby’s life that you absolutely do not want to miss, it has to be when your baby utters its first words. In that moment, you just feel like life is magical and being a parent is truly a blessing straight from god. Like most parents do, you also probably cant wait for the moment when your babies start talking.

So when exactly does it happen? If you go deeper into the study, you’ll get to know that your child has actually been communicating with you ever since you saw her for the first time, not through words, but through different emotions. She has been laughing, giggling, smiling, crying, pointing fingers at things she wants every now and then. But you’re probably keen for her to start talking to you with all the words and call you ‘mama.’ It is a very slow process for babies to start talking. This includes language development which is a skill that takes times. Most of the babies usually start speaking their first words between 11 to 14 months after they are born.

How do babies learn to talk?

3 months: At this stage, your baby responds very well to the voices and sounds around them. They also start cooing and make different sounds when they see you. They usually coo in a happy, repetitive, gentle and song-like vocalisation.

6 months: At this stage, babies start playing with noises and sounds that they can make. They start saying words like da-da or ba-ba. They also begin responding to their name and start recognising the native language. They also change the tone of their voice to depict their mood and feelings.

9 months: At this stage, babies start understanding basic words such as ‘no’ or ‘bye.’ By 12-16 months of age, babies start talking complete words. They usually utter words like mama and daddy by the time they are a year old. And they now also know what they are saying. They also respond to certain, short, one-step requests like - please don’t do that and obey the same.

18 months: At this stage, babies learn to pronounce basic words and can also point at people, objects, and even body parts that you name for them. They also try and repeat the sounds you make and the actions you do. They also sometimes tend to leave the sentences midway through.
