Nat Turner’s Rebellion took place on August 22, 1831 in Southampton County, Virginia. Its leader, Nat Turner, was a preacher. He had a great influence on the Africans living there, making them believe that he had been chosen by God to liberate them. Turner’s religious attitude to the rebellion, personal suffering, white masters’ treatment, and the desire for the liberation from enslavement were the crucial aspects that influenced the African slaves’ decision-making.
If I had been an African slave in Southampton County in 1831, I could not have known grammar and other subjects because slaves did not go to school. Therefore, only my emotions and memories about real events from my real life could have made me join Turner’s rebels. Therefore, the cruel and unfair treatment of white masters and Nat Turner’s preaching of his mission as a liberator of African slaves forced illiterate people to support rebels in their slaughter. Of course, I could not have condemned the rebels when they had liberated me from slavery. Angry at my white master, who had sold my wife and killed my son just for pleasure, I would have stopped at nothing. In this case, I would have had nothing to lose. Of course, I could not have survived after the Rebellion, but the life of slaves was unbearable at that time anyway.
Nat Turner's Rebellion was a historical event that showed the determination of African slaves. It made the white population take into consideration the potential tragic events that could take place in the future if they continued their oppression of Africans, which was one of the reasons of that uprising. At the same time, the illiteracy of African slaves and utmost atrocity of the whites were the major reasons of the emergence of Nat Turner's Rebellion in Southampton County. Though there were only approximately two hundred rebels there, they managed to kill many innocent people, including women and children. Still, if I had lived at that time, I would have joined the rebellion since I would have been influenced by the abovementioned factors, namely suffering, unbearable living conditions, white master’s cruelty, religious beliefs, illiteracy, and the desire for freedom.
