Opulence is a concept that applies to the excess of something, especially wealth. It is a term closely related to economics and in particular to situations of exaggerated wealth, both individually and from a general point of view.
If a person accumulates goods and money in a considerable way, he is said to be rich. He is someone who lives with great comforts, in luxury. He is an opulent individual. In principle, we would all like to enjoy this type of situation, since its advantages are undoubted. However, if a society as a whole lives in opulence, this circumstance brings possible disadvantages. One of them is waste or waste, that is, spending unnecessarily.
One of the effects of disproportionate spending is a foreseeable rise in prices, which causes an economic bubble effect, a circumstance that has occurred in relation to the price of housing in many countries. Another negative effect is the generation waste, that is, you have many things but these must be discarded at some point, creating garbage, packaging, places for scrapping and, ultimately, pose a problem for the sustainability of the environment. Consumerism is also an undesirable consequence of affluence; You buy to buy, consumption is trivialized and you live in superficiality.
Thus, opulence has two faces. It is reasonable and positive for those who enjoy it, although with harmful effects in other ways. There are currents of thought and religious movements that censor this situation. Christianity criticizes the accumulation of wealth and defends charity, help to the poor and simple life without luxury. Marxism has also criticized the opulent society model, considering it alienating, unsupportive, and unfair towards the most disadvantaged.
The economist John Kenneth Galbraith published a work on this question, "The affluent society." In it, he warned about the negative implications of affluence, its historical roots, its evolution and even the psychological effects on citizens.
Opposing values appear against opulence: austerity, a simple and balanced life. In some ways, the accumulation of wealth has a contradictory dimension, since we all want to prosper and live better, although it is easy to fall into greed which, by the way, in the Christian tradition is one of the seven deadly sins.(posh)
