Joe Biden’s Immigration Plan Could Face Tough Time in US Congress

On Tuesday, Republican lawmakers and conservative groups opposed President-elect Joe Biden’s forthcoming immigration plan as massive amnesty for people in the US illegally. They said the measure will face an uphill fight in a Congress because Democrats control just narrowly. Several pro-immigration groups said they would press Biden to go even further and take steps such as an immediate moratorium on deportations, detentions, and new arrests, in a further complication.  Their demands pointed out the pressures Biden would face from his party’s liberal wing as 4-years of President Donald Trump’s restrictive and often harsh immigration policies come to an end. The co-president of the liberal group Community Change, Lorella Praeli said, “It simply wouldn’t have happened without us. So we are now in a powerful position”.

Biden administration has planned to introduce the legislation shortly after being inaugurated on Wednesday. This move will hopefully spotlight his emphasis on an issue that’s defied major progress in Congress since 1986. US Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer said Trump’s impeachment trial, confirmation of Biden’s Cabinet nominees, and more COVID-19 relief will be the chamber’s top initial priorities. He said, “I look forward to working together with him”. It is noteworthy that Biden’s proposal would create an 8-year pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants, set up a processing program abroad for refugees seeking admission to the US, and push toward using technology to monitor the border. The measure was mentioned by an official from Biden’s transition team who described the plan on condition of anonymity.

A top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Chuck Grassley said, “It’s a mass amnesty for almost the entire population of illegal immigrants living in the United States and people who broke our laws to get here and stay here. A mass amnesty with no safeguards and no strings attached is a nonstarter”. Sen. Marco Rubio said, “There are many issues I think we can work cooperatively with President-elect Biden, but a blanket amnesty for people who are here unlawfully isn’t going to be one of them”. The process would be quicker for some immigrants. The young people (Dreamers) who arrived in the US illegally as children, agricultural workers, and people under temporary protective status could qualify more immediately for green cards if they are working, are in school, or meet other requirements.
