Historical information related to the African Champions League Confederation Cup

The African Champions League started more than forty years ago, and it was called the African Club Championship.

At that time it had 14 teams, and later developed into a tournament in which there were more competitors than all African teams.

The South African country at the time was in control of the coalition.

Soon after, however, when Ghana's Ohene Dagan established the African Champions Cup, control moved north.

He provided financial and moral support for the game and then became an important member of the Executive Committee of the African Union.

Accra Stadium in Ghana is named after him.

On July 31, 1965, Ghana hosted the first competition. The Ghanaian government also donated the cup. The cup was named after the President of Ghana, "Kotmi Nkuma", and Oryx Douala from Cameroon won the cup.

It should be noted that the Cameroonian club won the CAF Champions League in 1971, 1978, 1979 and 1980.

Over time, the rules of the game improved dramatically, with penalties taking place in 1971.

Adopted in the early seventies, Sudanese club Al-Merrikh won the championship, and their Ethiopian rival, Tilly Asmara, took the penalty kick in the first match.

In the late 1990s, the African Champions League appeared in a new form. Close to 54 clubs from the African continent compete for the league every year.

African Confederation Cup

The African Confederation Cup is a football match started by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and in which African clubs participate.

It is organized annually by the CAF and is the second largest CAF Champions League at club level, after the CAF Champions League.

The African Confederations Cup emerged from the Confederation Cup for African Champions in 1975, and the federation was established in 1992, and was merged in 2004.

Of the 56 CAF federations, about 55 domestic cup winners' clubs participate in this tournament, in addition to the annual qualification winners for the domestic leagues.

The top 15 associations participate in the CAF ranking with two teams, while the remaining associations are attended by one team.

In the preliminary stage, one qualifying round, then 32 rounds, involving 16 losing teams in 32 CAF Champions League rounds.

Then 16 teams meet in the group stage, and the first and second groups qualify for participation.

Then you enter the elimination roles. The winner of the match competed in the African Super Cup against the African Champions League.

Tournament history and regulation

This tournament began in 2004 and was previously known as the Confederation Cup, the African Cup Winners' Cup.

Later it was renamed the Confederations Cup.

Tournament history

Old system

Since the CAF Champions Cup in 1964, the first team to lift the trophy was Oryx Douala of Cameroon, who defeated Mali Stadium 2-1 in the final match.

He did not participate in the competition the following year, but resumed the final in 1966. At that time.

The first match, back and forth, entered the final, and another Mali team qualified for the final, with Real Madrid playing in Bamako at the Abidjan Stadium in Ivory Coast.

Real Bamako won the first leg 3-1, but performed well in the Kobe match because the Ivorian won the championship 4-1 and won the championship 5-4.

The Ghanaian finished the first match again with a 1-1 draw, but unexpectedly, the Ghanaian won 2-1 in the first leg to boost the cup they missed three years ago.

In the 1970s, the coronation ceremonies for Cameroonian clubs increased dramatically, creating a platform for the success of Cameroonian football in the world today.

Between 1971 and 1980, Cameroon won the cup four times, Canon Yaounde won the Douala championship three times in 1971, 1978 and 1980, and won the championship in 1979.

Conakry won during this period three championships in the versions 1972, 1975 and 1977.

New Championship System 1997

In addition to introducing the far field goal rule, this is the highest preference for the team that scores away goals. Until 1997, this rule did not change much in this game.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) this year took bold steps to pursue the leadership established a few years ago by creating a league stage in the tournament and renaming it the African Champions League.

And thus contribute to UEFA. The Confederation of African Football is also offering cash prizes to first-time participants.

The new Champions League tournament offers a prize of $ 1 million to the winners and $ 750,000 to the runners-up, which has become the richest club competition in Africa.
