All you need to know about Study Intakes for 2021

To all you students whose Study Abroad plans have been affected by Covid - this is for you!

What can you expect: Study Abroad 2021 vs Covid-19

In several countries around the world, there have been plenty of positive developments regarding Covid-19 - from the UK starting its vaccination drive to New Zealand declaring itself Covid-free!

What does this mean for international students applying for 2021 intakes?

Most probably, students will be able to enter their target country and begin their courses either online or on-campus within the next few months. This will vary country-to-country.

Current Scenario: Country-by-Country

UK

IMPORTANT: All travel to the UK from India has been banned currently. It is currently unclear what the situation will be following this date.

UK universities are accepting applications and admitting students for the January 2021 intake, and will continue to do so for the September 2021 intake as well.

All international travellers are required to self-isolate for 10 days upon arrival in the UK.

At present, most universities are either wholly online or have adopted a blended mode of instruction. However, by the September 2021 intake, more colleges will have begun on-campus instruction. The Office for Students which is the UK's Higher Education regulator has already issued formal quality and standards guidance for reopening for higher education providers.

Ireland

Universities in Ireland are continuing to process applications for its January intakes in the normal way, and will most likely do so for the September intakes as well.

There are currently no border restrictions for travel. There are protocols in place for welcoming students to Ireland and on-campus, including:

  • Accommodation and monitoring of health for 14-days isolation period post-arrival

  • On-campus instruction taking place, but with extensive social distancing protocols

Australia

Australia's universities are continuing to invite and process applications for the 2021 intakes.

At present, border entry for international students is restricted. All programs will be taught in online mode.

The different state governments are working closely with universities to develop guidelines for when the borders begin to be opened.

Students who have already got admission in the January 2021 intakes are being advised to apply for their Australian student visa, so that they will be ready to leave for Australia at the earliest. It has been declared that for students studying in online mode in their own countries who have their visas, the time will count towards making them eligible for the post-study work visa route.

New Zealand

New Zealand's universities are accepting international applications for 2021 intakes, however, at present only online delivery of programs is possible.

The borders are closed for international travel. The New Zealand government is not processing any visas while the borders remain closed. However, students who gain admission can begin online classes without a visa.

It has not yet been announced when borders will reopen.

Canada

Canada's universities are accepting international applications for 2021 intakes.

Canada's universities are supposed to begin reopening in a phased manner. However, the winter semester commencing in January will be conducted online. (Canadian university fees for international students)

Canada's borders are open, and international students are being permitted to enter the country, subject to the following regulations: (Canada for study)

  • Mandatory 14-day quarantine post-arrival in Canada. Your university may be able to assist you with accommodation at this time.

  • Students must have a valid health insurance plan.

USA

Universities in the USA are continuing to invite and accept international applications for the 2021 intakes.

The following information is for students who are planning to study in the USA during the Spring semester:

  • International students will have to enrol in at least one on-campus course. Fully online instruction is not permitted.

  • The US Immigration services have resumed student visas. The processing time is approximately 3 weeks, subject to change.

  • States have different regulations regarding international travel and border entry, with regard to Covid-19 negative certificates and mandatory isolation.

  • Universities have different provisions/requirements for international students regarding on-campus arrival, isolation etc.

  • Universities have different provisions for international students who may not be able to arrive by the deadline, including deferring start date to the following semester.

What should students do?

These are our guidelines for all international students planning to travel abroad for their studies in the coming year.

  1. Keep in touch with the university: It is important to keep in touch with your university, and to monitor all updates on the university website. Whether you will be attending online classes, using any campus facilities, living in campus accommodation or independently, it is important to keep track of the university's regulations and provisions.

  2. Keep up with all travel updates: There are often new developments and updates to the procedures and regulations regarding international travel. These may be imposed by the Indian government at home, or by the government of your target country.

  3. Isolate prior to your departure: Before you fly abroad, try to limit your exposure to outsiders, crowded places, and any other situation where you may be at risk of contracting Covid-19.

  4. Follow university rules and government guidelines regarding Covid-19: While studying in your new country, it is essential to follow all rules and guidelines - including social distancing, wearing a mask and practising good hygiene, lockdown and curfew rules, mandatory testing etc.

  5. Look after your health: Finally, to make sure you are able to really benefit from your Study Abroad experience, it is important to take care of your health! Limit your contact with people other than your roommates, classmates, teachers etc., practice good hygiene and healthy habits, and keep yourself safe!

The Covid-19 Pandemic has been a unique experience in all our lives. It is particularly challenging for students who want to study abroad.
