What is Google Fi, and How does it Work

Google Fi works as an MVNO or mobile virtual network carrier. It facilitates mobile broadband services, SMS, and voice calling. It offers data services on three different mobile networks in the U.S., including Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular. It also allows you to make calls and send text messages through Wi-Fi.

Google Fi is a U.S.-based service, but it can be used internationally to make calls using international data. It provides coverage like popular carriers. You can take advantage of Google Fi on many modern smartphones such as Android and iPhone.

More about Google Fi

Google Fi was mainly introduced as a Project Fi in 2015 according to an invitation, and it was introduced publicly in 2016. At the time of its launch in 2015, it only supported Nexus 6, but once it was launched publicly, it started working with Nexus 5x and the Pixel line. It now supports many Android phones and iPhones, but Google doesn’t provide customer support on all devices.

When you get started with Google Fi, they become your service provider. You become eligible to transfer voice and data over T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular network. But your usage is monitored by Google to charge you.

What differentiates Google Fi from other carriers

As you know, Google Fi is an MVNO, and that is the thing that differentiates it from other carriers. However, it isn’t the only thing that makes it different from others. Its streamlined billing creates a significant difference. It charges a basic amount for unlimited calls and texts. In terms of data, it charges a flat rate per GB of data.

How does Google Fi work?

Google Fi operates almost similar to usual mobile carriers without having its own network hardware. It doesn’t establish mobile phone towers and other required infrastructure; instead, it uses other networks. In the United States, Google Fi works with carriers like T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular under a deal.

Google Fi coverage

Let’s talk about Fi coverage in a simple term. It provides network coverage based on the total coverage of its partnered cellular carriers, meaning as a user, you get a combination of the entire network coverage of T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular. If you have always used any of these carriers, you better know how Google Fi works.

Google Fi Plans

Fi provides only two types of plans, including Flexible and Unlimited. It has been offering a flexible plan since the beginning with unlimited calling and texts. This plan costs from flat per GB to six GB. The Unlimited plan provides unlimited call, text, and high-speed data. These two plans also include taxes and government fees you can find on cell phone bills.

Google Fi with international calling and data

You can use Google Fi in international calling and data, but the charges may differ based on the plans you use. You can make calls from the United States to other countries, and Google Fi plans also work in international traveling. You can make calls through a Flexible plan and an Unlimited plan at a per-minute cost. Texts are free on a flexible plan, but you will have to pay for data. Under an unlimited plan, both texts and data are completely free.

How to Get Google Fi

If your phone supports Google Fi, you can visit Fi’s official website to get started. You will need to make an account on its website. After signing up for Google Fi, you can port your old phone number to a new one if you wish, and after some days, you get a SIM card from Google. After getting the SIM card, you have to insert it on your phone, and you are all set.
