How Have Football Shoes Evolved? A Brief Timeline

Footballers have always taken pride in their appearance, even more so on the pitch; and, as you'd expect, their athletic footwear of choice is always up to date. In the 1990s, it was the turn of the Adidas Predator series, which continued to dominate the pitch in the 2000s thanks to the F50. The F50 was so revolutionary that Adidas has used its name as the benchmark for all of its football boots since.

Today, football boots are at the forefront of innovation, with boots like the Nike Mercurial Vapor Terra, and the Puma evoPOWER, with its unique two-piece sole, set to revolutionize the way the game is played. But how did they evolve over the years? How did it come to this?

History Of Football Shoes

Earlier for playing football, there were no specific boots or shoes. It was played in work shoes that were heavy and difficult to move swiftly in. Further, there was no additional grip to help swift movement.

Fast forward to the year 1940, two German brothers Adolf Dassler and Rudolf Dassler were the creators of the football shoes that were close to what we see football cleats as today. These were leather shoes with steel studs on the sole and now there are the light and comfortable shoes offer by Nike, Adidas, and other brands and now also many have questions about how to select the best out of them. Adolf Dassler made Adidas and Rudolf then made Puma because of some feud between the two.

The 1960s was a time of advancement in technology which resulted in better designs and better options and focussed on offering control of the ball and the game to the player.

It was not before the 1970s that the players started to make sponsorship deals with different brands of football shoes.

In the 1990s, we got modern football shoes with the release of Adidas Predators. It provided cushioning to the heel of the player's foot which made them run faster and make better turns. Eventually, boots became lighter and then were also available in a lot of colors than before. There are many arguments for choosing between Nike and Adidas but you can choose as per your requirement. Now Nike also started capitalizing on the production and marketing of football shoes.

Today we have boots that can do and anything and everything. Boots that are fit for different types of grounds, boots that are fit for different people, and boots that support a particular skill or skill set. Today, with shoes that can be embedded with chips to monitor and analyze movements and skills, we have come a very long way!
