Texas Window Tinting Laws And Requirements That You Need To Know

The beautiful state of Texas has bright sunshine all year round. Yes, we love it but the sun’s UV rays can make your car upholstery crack and fade.

Because of this, the window tint business is booming in Texas because it is deemed as an effective solution for dealing with the bright, hot sun. It is proven that car window tint can help prevent the damage, danger, and discomfort that solar heat and UV rays cause.

However, there are Texas Window Tinting Laws that you need to know regarding the VLT allowed. According to the official Texas government website, the window tinting standards must be followed if you don't want to get pulled over by the police.

When it comes to the VLT, only 25% is required but for those who are not familiar yet with how BLT works, it refers to the Visible Light Transmission. So when we say 25%, it means that the film allows 25% of the light to pass through thus a higher VLT is lighter compared to a lower percentage.

Not only that, the manufacturers of tinting or "sunscreening" are also required to certify the film they are selling and that the tinting devices may not be red, amber, or blue in color.

Here are the legal tint required for passenger vehicles in Texas:

Front Windshield - only 25% VLT tint is allowed above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line or top 5 inches, with less than 25% reflection.
Front-seat side windows - use up to 25% tint darkness
Back seat side windows - Any tint darkness can be used if you have side outside mirrors – 25% tint required without side mirrors
Rear window - Any tint darkness can be used if you have side outside mirrors – 25% tint required without side mirrors

For multi-purpose vehicles, here are the requirements:

Front Windshield - only 25% VLT tint is allowed above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line or top 5 inches, with less than 25% reflection.
Front-seat side windows - use up to 25% tint darkness
Back seat side windows - Any tint darkness can be used
Rear window - Any tint darkness can be used if you have side outside mirrors – 25% tint required without side mirrors

Please note that you can access the complete copy of the Texas Window Tinting Laws from the Texas DMV website or by visiting their local DMV office.
