Malignant Ascites Treatments Include Paracentesis, Peritoneovenous Shunt Placement, and Diuretics

Malignant ascites are a potentially fatal condition that develops when malignant cells accumulate in the peritoneal cavity. They form cancerous tumors that later become malignant, and they can continue to grow until they reach the point at which they are too big to be absorbed by the body. They spread through the bloodstream until they reach the lymph nodes and organs, where they remain for a considerable period of time before they die. This is known as metastasis, and if cancer becomes too big, it can spread throughout the body. It is estimated that approximately one-third of all cancers are caused by metastasized cancer cells. Selecting the appropriate malignant ascites treatment modality remains a careful process, which should take into account potential risks and benefits and the life expectancy of the patient.

While not every individual with malignant ascites will develop cancer, there is a thirty percent chance that cancer will develop if effective malignant ascites treatment is not applied early. The longer that cancer goes untreated, the higher the chances of relapse. The cancer cells may begin to spread outside of the abdominal cavity. In some cases, cancer may spread to the liver, lungs, kidneys, or spleen. If left untreated, cancer may also spread to the skin or bones.

Malignant ascites are the most serious and potentially fatal form of cancer that many people with this condition may suffer from. However, the good news is that cancer rarely spreads to other parts of your body. There is malignant ascites treatment in an early stage. Once you are diagnosed with cancer, there are treatments available, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. However, the earlier that you are diagnosed, the better your prognosis will be

Malignant ascites will require aggressive malignant ascites treatment. This may mean that your doctor will prescribe several medications. You may also undergo a surgical procedure to remove cancerous cells. Cancer treatments will depend on the type and severity of your cancer. Your doctor will be able to recommend a treatment plan based on the individual characteristics of your cancer. Treatment includes paracentesis, peritoneovenous shunt placement, and diuretics. The goal of treatment is to target palliation of symptoms, which can include abdominal pain, dyspnea, nausea, vomiting, and anorexia. Peritoneovenous shunt transfers fluid through a one-way valve from the peritoneal cavity into the superior vena cava for the treatment of malignant ascites.

In paracentesis, a needle or catheter is inserted into the peritoneal cavity to obtain ascitic fluid for malignant ascites treatment. Paracentesis is effective in relieving the symptoms associated with malignant ascites but it requires repeated treatments.

Malignant ascites treatment depends on the cancer type. Doctors will consider the stage of your cancer, its location, and your personal health. The more serious your cancer is, the more aggressive your treatment will be. However, malignant ascites can be controlled once you have been diagnosed, and if caught early enough, they may even be eradicated.
