Custom embroidered clothing is the new trend in town. Embroidering a piece of clothing is one of the most effective ways to transform it. Just a needle, some embroidery thread, a hoop and a suitable method to sew the image to your fabric and some patience is what you will need. Embroidery incorporates some beautiful colored thread that depicts very beautiful designs on fabric. The color, texture and everything else in your garment take on a very different dimension with high quality embellishing work.

Select your garment

It is very important to choose the right fabric for your design – especially if you are a newbie. Starting your first project with a thin fabric like a net or chiffon will be a way of inviting trouble. It will cause you frustrations that will drive you away.

You should consider cotton fabrics if you want to get the most from your project. However, this does not mean that you cannot embroider other types of fabrics. Any piece of fabric can be embroidered. If you have thin pieces of fabric such as cotton voile then you should know that the fabric will not support the weight of metallic thread or heavy embroidery along with sequins beads. If you are embroidering on such pieces then you will need to use less dense embroidery with fine pieces of threads such as shadow work. On heavy fabrics, you will need a little dense fabric than fine work.

Make sure you use stabilizers of delicate and thin fabrics such as silk for your custom embroidered garments. Use them or your regular fabric if you are using heavy fabrics such as gold thread. Stabilizers can be anything from store-bought to muslin ones.

Collect what you need

You should collect everything you will need for your work. You will need a suitable embroidery needle, a suitable thread for your project, a sharp pencil for drawing the design on your fabric and a carbon sheet if you need to transfer your design.

Decide on the embroidery position

When it comes to the position of the embroidery, it is all up to you. You can embroider anywhere – on the cuffs, on the back, on pockets, on collars, on both sides of the yoke, on one side of the yoke, and diagonally on the front.

Choose the design

The choice of your design depends on the type of clothing and the type of fabric. A baby dress will need a baby embroidery design and not a photo of a skeleton that you would embroider on the t-shirt of a teenager.

Prepare the fabric

Once you choose everything including the color scheme, now you should prepare the fabric to ensure the best custom embroidered clothing. To prepare the garment, you will have to prewash it and get rid of unnecessary sizing. This will prevent shrinking and it is important because if the fabric shrinks later, your embroidery stitches will not shrink and this means there will be puckers. You should dry and press the wrinkles out.
