4 Things You Must Buy When in Mexico

Mexico is a beautiful country! With its vast beaches, delectable cuisine, and unique history, the place is truly a treasure trove. If you're a first-time visitor, it's not uncommon to be mesmerized by the kaleidoscope of colors all around. There are so many decorative items and souvenirs to choose from that you may not know what to get.

Whether you are traveling to Mexico for the firsttime or a seasoned traveler, here are a few items you may want to buy.

1. Chocolate

Chocolate has been ubiquitous in Mexican culture.Indigenous Mexican tribes have been cultivating cacao beans for almost 4,000 years. They are among the first humans to transform these bitter beans into something delicious.

Today, it's not uncommon for most travel itineraries to include a trip to a chocolate factory to learn how chocolate is made and sample some of their best chocolate. You can pick some artisanal chocolate and even grab fresh vanilla while you're there.

2. Silver Jewelry

Silver is relatively cheap in Mexico. You can buy silver jewelry in galleries, at the beach, and in regular stores. Taxco silver is a favorite souvenir and perfect for a wide range of occasions. Taxco isa Mexican city that is the home of an ancient silver mine and is often considered Mexico's silver capital. You'll find many silver stores in this region.

When buying Taxco silver, look for the 925 or 950 marks. These signs denote the quality of the silver you are buying. 925 is sterling silver, and 950 is pure silver. The MEX or MEXICO stamp also indicates quality.

3. Huaraches

Huaraches are a pre-Columbian style of sandal that has survived the test of time. Traditional Mexican huaraches are handcrafted by those who have been making them for generations. These sandals have a unique weaving pattern and are made using a single strand of softened vegetable-tanned leather. The leather is soaked in oil and water and hammered to make it pliable and retain shape better.

But don't buy the cheaphuaraches. These are usually mass-produced in China with little consideration to quality or craft. Instead, choose a pair from retailers who work with traditional artisans to provide artisans with employment and you with a quality product.

4. Blown Glass

Making unique handicrafts out of blown glass is one of the most traditional and well-respected craft forms in Mexico. You can choose from beautifully made wine glasses, shots glasses, teacups, crockery sets, and more at affordable prices.

Mexico has something for everyone, and bringing home a keepsake can be a great reminder of a wonderful trip.
