5 ASP.NET Trends To Look Out For In 2022

"I think ASP.NET Core is the biggest game changer in the history of Web development using the Microsoft stack,", says Philip Japikse, developer, coach, author, teacher, Microsoft MVP and Visual Studio Live! presenter, in a recent article.

With 30 years of development experience, Philip is an international speaker, author and a passionate member of the developer community.

ASP.NET Core is quickly becoming mainstream.

In August this year, Microsoft announced ASP.NET Core 2.2.-preview1. Web templates have been updated to Bootstrap 4 and Angular 6.

Bristowe, a member of Developer Relations Team at Progress Software said, "When it comes to ASP.NET, the best, long-term bet is [to] target ASP.NET Core. This is where most of the innovation is occurring in terms of features and overall performance."

The new features in the preview include:

  • API Controller Conventions
  • Endpoint Routing
  • Health ChecksHTTP/2 in Kestrel
  • Improvements to IIS hosting
  • SignalR Java client

In August of this year, Telerik conducted a survey, asking a series of questions relating to ASP.NET development. Those involved in ASP.NET application development services participated in the detailed round of questions.

Here are the key findings and trends for the future of ASP.NET development.

  • ASP.NET MVC will continue to be the leading .NET Web technology. 57% of respondents who are into ASP.NET application development services, will develop .NET applications choosing it as their primary option.

  • The survey finds that, the familiarity of ASP.NET Core has increased dramatically since a significant number of respondents who know the benefits of the technology, have tried it out, or are using the technology.

  • Blazor is yet to get traction among the developers and Microsoft Enterprise services providers alike. Around 80% of the respondents said that they know very little about Blazor as compared to ASP.NET core.

  • The results highlight that, while ASP.NET MVC still leads the way as the technology of choice among companies or developers involved in Microsoft enterprise development services with 57% respondents choosing ASP.NET MVC, ASP.NET Core has experienced a surge of adoption, +10% compared to all other ASP.NET technologies.

  • Respondents believe, ASP.NET Web Forms are the most viable option when it comes to development. It is considered to be one of Microsoft’s most mature and popular development environments and will continue to be so over the coming years.

  • ASP.NET Core adoption is bound to increase at the expense of all of the other technologies. 49% of the participants who are into ASP.NET application development services choosing it as their primary technology for the next 12 months.

  • The combination of Angular and WebAPI has managed to create a feasible alternative to technologies like ASP.NET Web Forms and ASP.NET MVC. It has helped achieve the same goals as these technologies rely more heavily on the client-side.

Conclusion

There is no denying that ASP.NET is one of the best development resources to come out of Microsoft’s hat. With mature and robust development environment, it has managed to gather its fan following.
