Industries that will be radically changed by the IoT

There is no question about it, the Internet of Things (IoT) has changed how companies conduct their daily business across industries. From agriculture to health and retail. Most things that we used to see in Sci-fi shows like Star Trek are now a reality, and to think that IoT is just starting and that it has a long way to go when it comes to development and application in different industries. It is no surprise that we are witnessing such great changes happening almost on a daily basis. In this article, we will cover some of the major industries that stand to benefit the most with the growth and development of the IoT.

Agriculture

Agriculture is one of the industries that has benefited the most from the Internet of Things. If you take into consideration that the world will need to produce 70% more food in 2050 than it did in 2006 in order to feed the growing population of the Earth, it is no wonder that so much effort is put into modernizing the agricultural methods through technology. According to BI Intelligence IoT device installations in the agriculture industry are estimated to grow from 30 million in 2015 to 75 million in 2020. The implementations vary, from sensor usage for data collection on yield status to using drones for crop monitoring and increasing crop production. The IoT helps farmers get all the necessary data that can help them better time their sowing and harvesting as well as adjust their crop treatment schedule.

Healthcare

The incorporation of IoT in healthcare has been significantly beneficial when it comes to increasing success rates in patient treatment. IoT electronics manufacturing influence on medical device development is speeding up the process and making it far more precise. Not only that, by connecting an MRI or a CT machine to the internet, the medical staff can get alerts when repairs are needed, thus avoiding sudden breakdowns and ensuring that patients have unobstructed access to the diagnostic equipment that can save their life. When it comes to day-to-day patient care in hospitals the IoT has enabled the nursing staff to monitor the vital stat of entire wards just by glancing at their tablet, thus increasing the response rate in emergencies. The ability to monitor patients in real time can help adjust their treatment and catch even the smallest irregularities.

Transportation

The innovations brought by the IoT might be the most visible in transportation. The transportation industry is the second-largest segment investing in the Industrial Internet of Things, spending approximately $78 billion from 2016. From logistics to fleet management and public transport management. The last one being especially important in big cities, by having real-time vehicle tracking public transportation companies can inform the passengers of any changes and delays as soon as they occur, and can even provide them with possible re-routing options so as to save them time. And the passengers can get all this information straight to their phones. The IoT in transportation has enabled us to have even the smallest of perks, like being able to track our assets as they are en route to our home. We can go online and see where our packages are at what time, and when to expect them. It is a simple thing but has lowered the number of packages getting lost on the way.

Energy

Energy providers have found some real benefits in the usage of the Internet of Things. For starters, there are the smart meters that are being installed in customers home, they are linked directly to the companies main server, and can help the company track the energy consumption in real time. And not only that, but they also provide the necessary data that helps better predict demand, spot outages, and helps the utility company know when to schedule repairs. In the UK,  the government has set a goal to install a smart meter in every home and small business by 2020 so that it can boost energy saving efforts while at the same time delivering richer energy data to suppliers. Another use for IoT in the energy industry was found by oil and gas companies for measuring along drilling lines. By taking these measurements and, consequently adapting the speed and pressure of the drilling procedure, the devices used have the purpose of optimizing the process and cut expenditure.

These are just some of the industries affected in a positive way by the Internet of Things. As our technology develops we are bound to see more and more advances within the listed branches as well as new and innovative usages in other industries. After all, the IoT has the potential to truly change our world for the better in the next few decades.
