In What Works For Me – a series of articles considering how we can find balance in our lives – we talk to celebrities about wellbeing and self-care.Surfing, pole dancing, running, HIIT, Pilates and yoga. These are just some of the eclectic – and exhausting – hobbies of TV chef and presenter Rachel Khoo.“I love the mental aspect of exercise, it’s not just about the physical things,” she tells HuffPost UK. “With surfing, for example, you’re waiting for your next wave, you’re focussed, you’re in the moment. For me, exercise provides escapism.”Keeping active is now Khoo’s main form of self-care, but she used to hate exercising when the fitness industry was “all about losing weight”. In more recent years, though, the narrative has been more about feeling good – and the 40-year-old has thrown herself into trying everything.“I follow this Instagram account called See my Strong [started by journalist and author Poorna Bell],” says Khoo. “It’s really championing exercise, not as a form of looking slimmer or getting into a bikini shape – which I’ve always struggled with – but it’s more about feeling your best.” READ MORE: Your Ultimate Guide To Exercising Outdoors If You Never Have Before Pre-pandemic, the account inspired Khoo to try pole dancing, because she’s always been fascinated by the strength of performers. When the studio was forced to close, she signed up to a weight training programme on the app FIIT and discovered a new love.  “I really enjoy it, because I feel really strong afterwards,” she says. “I’ve got to pick up a 15 kilo toddler when he’s screaming, so I want to be strong for that. I want to feel like I can do these things.”Khoo has two children: a four-year-old and an 18-month-old. She moved to Sweden in 2016, so hasn’t had to deal with months of homeschooling like her British friends, as her eldest has continued nursery. But, she says, the pandemic has still been a challenge. All her work is based in the UK – and Sweden was only added to the government’s “travel corridors” list this week. “I was a week off filming a TV project [when lockdown hit] and that got postponed, and there’s still all this uncertainty,” she says. “I don’t have any work. I’ve lost out on a lot of work and I’m continuing to lose out on work because I can’t travel. So, I’ve had to grapple with the situation.”READ MORE: How To Make A Career Plan When You Feel Like There Are No Options Khoo acknowledges she’s in “a very privileged situation” financially, because she has the support of her husband, but says work still forms a key part of her identity.  “I built it up from scratch and I’m very proud of my career, it’s a lot of blood sweat and tears that have got me to where I am,” she says. “I’m losing out on all these jobs and I have no security. You start thinking: ‘Should I go and get a job at the local supermarket?’”Another source of frustration during the pandemic has been the government’s obesity strategy, says Khoo. As a chef, she’s taken an active interest in it. “The government keeps saying people need to lose weight and there should be a tax on unhealthy food, but I think they should also be making fruit and veg more accessible and encourage people to eat it,” she says. “If buying some fruit and veg is more expensive than getting a bucket of fried chicken and chips, what are people meant to choose?” READ MORE: This Crispy Tofu With Spicy Sichuan Glaze Salad Recipe Will Win Over Your Kids Khoo herself identifies as a “flexitarian” and limits the amount of meat she buys, usually settling on one organic chicken a month. It’ll be used for a roast, then a pie the next day. The bones will make stock, and that will form the basis of a chicken risotto.“If you’re going to use meat, you have to make sure you really use it all the way and that you’re not wasting anything,” she says. “My biggest bugbear is food waste.”She isn’t likely to make the jump to vegetarian or vegan anytime soon, though – even after delving into sustainable diets during her recent podcast venture, A Carnivore’s Crisis, recorded earlier this year. “I think you have to do the best you can,” she says. “Don’t get into this moral guilt and think you’re the cause of the end of the world and climate change. I don’t think the responsibility should fall on the individual to solve climate problems, it needs to be a joint effort between the government, big corporations and the individual.”READ MORE: So, Who Did The 'Eat Out To Help Out' Deal Actually Help? Her attitude of “doing the best you can” extends towards parenting, she jokes. “If they need to watch Peppa Pig, so be it! At the end of the day, they will be alright. It’s about not being so hard on yourself.”Until her work situation resolves itself, Khoo is staying positive with her daily exercise routine, coupled with the occasional online cookery class. She may need to “pivot” her career plans to suit the new world we live in, but she’ll no doubt land on her feet, with the same tried-and-tested methods. “I find a lot of comfort in action and doing things, rather than being in the moment and feeling sorry for myself,” she says. “Everything I’ve done in my career is because I’ve gone and knocked on doors. A lot of doors haven’t opened, a lot of doors have been slammed in my face. “But persistence pays off, I really believe that.”Rachel Khoo is the host of the documentary podcast series A Carnivore’s Crisis, a Pipi Films production written and produced by Nicola Harvey and Naima Brown. Using Netflix is straightforward, but there are tips and tricks to make your viewing experience even better. Once you've picked the best Netflix plan, and made sure you're watching in the best quality possible, try setting up profiles to personalize your account. Netflix is available on dozens of different devices, and each app has its own features and secrets. Visit Business Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories.  Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky If you're interested in good, old-fashioned entertainment, chances are you watch Netflix often. With over 183 million paying members streaming from nearly every country on Earth, Netflix is by far the biggest streaming service in the world. Sure, a big part of Netflix's popularity comes from its extensive catalog, which includes a growing library of original programming available nowhere else. But Netflix's ability to attract eyeballs is also due in large part to its ease-of-use. Netflix is available on just about every popular platform, and has tons of extra features that let you watch however you want. If you're a subscriber who's looking to take your streaming experience to the next level, here are over a dozen tips and tricks to help make you a Netflix master. 1. Choose the best plan for your viewing habits Although most users are subscribed to Netflix's Standard plan, Netflix actually offers five different subscription tiers, each with their own price and features. Anyone who remembers the early days when Netflix was a DVD-by-mail rental service (with no late fees!) will be tickled to know the streaming giant is still offering that. Alongside the streaming plans are two DVD & Blu-ray plans, which let you rent shows and movies on physical discs. If you're interested in switching up your plan, you can change your subscription at any time. And if you ever need to change your payment method, you can do that, too. 2. Personalize your account with profiles Netflix's personalized recommendation technology, which decides what titles appear on your Netflix homepage, is one of the most advanced in the industry. Every single row is organized and curated based on what you watch, click on, and search for. This sort of personalization is an exceptional feature if you're the sole user, but it goes out the window if you share your account with friends and family. This is where profiles come in. Every Netflix account can have up to five different profiles, which helps keep everyone's preferences separate.  In other words, if you love telenovelas, but your wife only watches sitcoms, you can each make a profile and receive recommendations tailored to your specific tastes. Here is our guide to adding a profile to your Netflix account. Every time you log into Netflix, you'll be able to choose which proile you want to open, and it's simple enough to switch between profiles. And if you later decide that you don't need a profile, you can delete a profile from any device. 3. Manage your Continue Watching list One thing that everyone associates with Netflix is binge-watching. And one way that Netflix makes binge-watching easy is with the Continue Watching list. Whenever you watch a show or movie, but then turn it off without finishing, it's added to your Continue Watching list. This list makes it easy to start again when you eventually return — just click the title you want, and it'll resume exactly where you left off. But the Continue Watching list doesn't have to be totally automated. If there's a show or two on your Continue Watching list that you know you're never going to return to, you can delete items from it at any time.  4. Download shows and movies to watch offline Netflix is called a "streaming service" because movies and shows are streamed to your device via the internet. But did you know that you can watch Netflix, even without an internet connection? Here's how you can download Netfix shows and movies for offline viewing. It's important to note that this feature is only available for some titles, and for mobile devices only. The option to download movies and shows is especially useful  if you're planning on going somewhere that doesn't have a stable internet connection. A loon a long flight, perhaps, or camping. However, your downloads don't last forever. Most downloads will last on your device for a week before "expiring," which means you'll have to download them again. The exact amount of time that each show or movie will last depends on the title. 5. Find obscure titles using Netflix codes When you open Netflix, you see a selection of titles that you've watched recently, or that Netflix thinks you'll like. But Netflix has thousands of shows and movies, most of them so obscure that you'll never see them on your homepage. So how can you find new titles to watch, without going through your homepage? If you're using Netflix on your computer, you're in luck: you can use Netflix codes to find nearly anything you want to watch. Netflix codes are short strings of numbers that are assigned to every single genre and subgenre of show or movie. When you enter these codes into your browser's URL bar, you'll be taken to a page that lists every title in that genre. For example, to see every action comedy (43040), you'll go to https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/43040. While there's no comprehensive list of all the Netflix codes, we've compiled some our favorites. These include: Wine and beverage appreciation: 1458 Cerebral Scandanavian movies: 995 Korean crime thrillers: 434 Creature features: 6895 Campy movies: 1252 Satires: 4922 Tearjerkers: 6384 Westerns: 7700 Screwball comedies: 9702 Cult TV shows: 74652 Goofy courtroom movies: 285 6. Get Netflix on your favorite devices Unlike some other streaming services, you can watch Netflix on nearly any device that offers the Netflix app and can connect to the internet. In addition to watching on your desktop, other devices you can stream Netflix include: Smart TVs: You can watch Netflix on your TV via a streaming device like a Roku or Apple TV. Most smart TVs have a Netflix app built in as well. Gaming consoles: If you have a PlayStation 4, you can download Netflix onto it as well. The same goes for the Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch, unfortunately, is one of the only gaming devices that doesn't have Netflix. Phones and tablets: To watch Netflix on your phone or tablet, you simply need to download the Netflix app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Depending on how much you pay for Netflix, you can watch it on one, two, or four devices at once.  7. Use easy-to-remember keyboard shortcuts If you're watching Netflix on your Mac or PC, you don't need to use your mouse to control everything. Nearly every playback option can be selected and controlled with your keyboard. To Play or Pause the video, press the Space Bar or Enter (PC)/Return (Mac). To open Full Screen mode, press F. You can exit Full Screen mode with Esc. Rewind 10 seconds with the left arrow key, and fast forward 10 seconds with the right arrow key. Increase the volume with the up arrow key, and decrease the volume with the down arrow key. Mute the audio by pressing M. If you're watching a TV show, you can skip the intro by pressing S. 8. Check and set the best video quality We've come a long way from the grainy VHS tapes of the 90s. Nowadays, you should be able to see every drop of sweat on every actor's face — if you can't, either they're good at staying cool under pressure, or your video quality isn't as high as it could be. First, some basic tips on improving your video quality: Make sure you have a strong internet connection. If your internet connection is too slow to load HD content, then Netflix will only give you standard definition video. This type of video can be blurry and pixelated, which isn't great if you want to make out fine details. Keep your battery life high, and off reduced power mode. When your battery runs low, some devices will start limiting how much power apps can use. This can cause Netflix to run with lower video quality. Check that you haven't turned off HD video in Netflix's settings. Each Netflix profile has an "HD Toggle," which lets you select what video quality Netflix should stream in by default. You can pick from Low, Medium, or High, or Auto, which will give you whatever video quality Netflix feels your internet can handle. If you're signed up for Netflix Premium, and have a device that supports it, you can also stream in 4K Ultra HD quality, which is the highest quality you can get. 9. Add captions, subtitles, and audio descriptions Have you ever had trouble understanding what was being said in a movie? Luckily, Netflix offers subtitle and caption tracks on every show and movie. Most titles even have them in multiple languages. You might also have the opposite problem — you can hear the show or movie just fine, but you can't see it. In that case, it's good to note that many titles also have an audio description mode. Turning on this mode will give the show or movie a narrator that describes everything happening on screen. It's a lot like an audiobook, only with optional visuals. You can turn on subtitles or audio descriptions through the language options menu that's available whenever you're watching something. And if you later decide that you don't need these additions, you can turn them off. 10. Change the language on your account Netflix might be an American company, but not everyone who uses it is a native English speaker. If you'd like to use Netflix in another language, you can change the language on your account at any time. There are over 20 languages available to choose from. On that language page, you'll have two choices. Firstly, you can choose what language the menus and other text is in. Secondly, you can choose what language you like to listen to and read, which effects what subtitles and audio tracks Netflix gives you by default when you launch a show or movie. 11. Turn off autoplay If you've opened up Netflix recently, you might have been greeted by a loud video preview for one of their latest shows or movies. While these autoplaying videos can be useful for finding new content to watch, they can also be incredibly annoying. Many people do not know that you can actually turn this feature off. You can turn the autoplay feature off by navigating to your Account page. Once there, uncheck "Autoplay previews while browsing on all devices," then click "Save" at the bottom of the page.   From this page, you can also set it so when you finish an episode of a show, Netflix won't automatically play the next episode. To do this, uncheck "Autoplay next episode in a series on all devices." These settings work on a profile-by-profile basis, so if you use multiple profiles, you'll need to change the setting on all of them. 12. Keep your account secure To use Netflix, you have to give the company a decent amount of personal information — your name, your email, your payment details. As such, you don't want anyone getting into your account. Like any website, Netflix lets you change your password easily — you just need to head to the Account settings menu. And it only takes a few clicks to log out of Netflix on any device. The bottom line Netflix is incredibly easy to use and navigate. And no matter how you watch, you have tons of ways to customize your account. TLDR: Speechify Audio Reader can magically help you read more by turning any text into spoken audio you can listen to anywhere. Audiobooks are a godsend for people who love to read, yet feel like they can never find the time to actually crack a book. And that doesn’t even consider the time saved when you listen to a book rather than read it, especially if you listen at 1.5 or 2 times speed. So what if you could turn virtually everything you currently want or need to read into an audiobook or a podcast? Instead of saving documents, newspaper… This story continues at The Next Web

In What Works For Me – a series of articles considering how we can find balance in our lives – we talk to people about wellbeing and self-care.With her infectious love of fitness and ceaselessly optimistic demeanour, Davina McCall was the on-screen poster girl for self-care long before it became fashionable. But behind closed doors, the 52-year-old admits her wellbeing routine can quickly crumble when life takes over. “Before lockdown I was extremely busy and, of course, the first thing that goes when I’m busy are the things that really help me, like exercise and mindfulness,” she tells HuffPost UK. “I hadn’t trained properly for quite a while. I’d done 10 minutes here and there, but not my usual 40 minute-workout three or four times a week. And I hadn’t practised mindfulness for a few months.”The pandemic provided a wake-up call, though, as Davina quickly recognised the need for a self-care intervention. “When I got into lockdown, I experienced something I don’t think I’ve ever really experienced before,” she says. “I just woke up really anxious.” With two of her three teenage children due to take A Levels and GCSEs this year, Davina was worried about school closures. She’d also lie awake thinking about the future of her work – or if it was even safe to go to the supermarket. “I’ve never been so...”, she trails off and pauses to consider the magnitude of the past few months. “It felt like the world was collapsing,” she says, slowly. “It was an extremely stressful time for everybody, I think. Life seemed so unfair.”READ MORE: Hopelessness Is A Heavy Feeling. Here Are 5 Ways To Help It Pass. In the early weeks of lockdown, when the death numbers kept increasing, Davina says everything felt bleak. “I didn’t want to listen to music or watch television, which was a really weird experience for me,” she says. “I was left thinking: ‘So, what do I do?’”She started practising mindfulness using the Headspace app – something she’s done on and off since 2013 to carve out much-needed stillness in her otherwise busy life. “It just really grounded me,” she says. “It’s the thing that’s always helped me in a time of darkness, when I’ve felt worried. But this was next level worry. I thought: ‘I’ve never felt like this before.’”Practising mindfulness helped the anxiety to subside, she says. She also started filling her time with podcasts and audiobooks – something she plans to take forward now that restrictions are easing. Learning something new from a podcast or audiobook appealed, because she felt her “mind going to mush” without the usual stimulation from work. Now, she’ll listen to audiobooks while walking the dog, which, she says, provides “focus” amid the uncertainty in her life. She strides with her phone firmly in her pocket, putting an end to the mindless scrolling we’re all so used to. “There used to be a time when my bath was the really relaxing place I’d go – and then I started to take my phone in the bath,” she admits. “The number of times I’ve dropped my phone in the bath! It feels like our phones are just attached to our hands and if we have a spare minute we pick them up.”The uncertainty surrounding work is tough, says Davina. Despite pubs, restaurants and hair salons reopening, TV is still unsettled, she says, adding that she has “no idea” about Big Brother’s rumoured revival. “TV is in such turmoil at the moment, as far as what’s going to be made and what’s not going to be made,” she says. “I’ve got no idea if there are any plans on the table for Big Brother – all I know is that I loved presenting that show with Rylan.”Despite the challenges, this period of slowing down has had its perks, and like many of us, Davina has been able to connect with people in her community for the first time, “in silly, small ways”.Where her neighbours would once walk passed one other “like repelling magnets,” the pandemic has brought them together. They started nodding at one another in the street, then chatting, and before long they were bringing each other groceries from the supermarket. She’s recently moved, but hopes this new sense of community and culture of kindness continues around her new home. “I do think that loneliness was the biggest problem in lockdown for people, you can feel very isolated,” she says. “So I would try to just talk to anybody who would listen and make sure that everybody was alright.”READ MORE: Davina McCall Insists She Has 'No Idea' About Big Brother's Rumoured Return To Channel 4 None of us know how the country will respond to lockdown restrictions easing, or if a second wave is on the way. But to keep anxiety at bay amid the never-ending question marks, Davina is making her much-loved exercise routine and mindfulness a priority once more.  “I feel less stressed, less worried,” she says. ”After 10 minutes of just giving my head a bit of a holiday, I come back, open my eyes and think: ‘It’s okay, I’m on it.’” Headspace x Boots gift cards are available from Boots.com for £30, and come in one of four content themes Mind, Health, Sleep and Focus.READ MORE: 'I've Tried Everything': Ian 'H' Watkins Reveals Life-Long Battle With Insomnia 'Your Skin Will Wrinkle, Your C**t Will Get Dry': Miriam Margolyes On Finding Body-Acceptance At 78 Brexit Uncertainty Is Helping Fuel The Rise Of Mindfulness, Says Headspace Co-Founder Andy Puddicombe

Quick forward and turns out I wedded a history instructor one whose adoration for history has been roused by learning them as connecting with energizing stories.Since I didn't have an extraordinary history of instruction growing up and in light of the fact that I needed to almost certainly value my better half's field of study I swung to books.Be that as it may, perusing a customary history book a work of true to life, not a course reading felt level and dry.At times, I've discovered that chronicled book recordings can even have a craving for tuning in to an anecdotal story complete with treacheries and plot turns. With an expansiveness and profundity coordinated by no other one-volume life, he helps the peruser through Washington's disturbed childhood, his gifted accomplishments in Wars, his formation of Mount Vernon, his chivalrous endeavors with the Continental Army, his managing the Constitutional Convention and his imminent execution as America's first president.Starting with his childhood, the book depicts King's instruction as a priest, his command as a pioneer of the Montgomery transport blacklist, his significant job in the social equality showings and his intricate association with the Kennedy siblings, LBJ, Malcolm X, and various other driving figures of the day.
The Black Friday deal announcements are coming in fast, and now Audible has announced that it will be doing a one-day sale on audiobooks. It's a members-only thing, as usual, but the weird thing is that it's not actually on Black Friday.According to Audible there will be 300 books on sale for the Black Friday sale, all costing £2.50 each, and everything will only be available for a single day.The thing is that this is happening on 23rd November, which is about a week before Black Friday itself.Yeah doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me either, but as someone who jumped on the audiobook train I'm going to enjoy getting my hands on some stuff dirt cheap.Because audiobooks are expensive as hell.
Netflix has riled up movie makers by testing out variable speed settings in its Android app so you can speed up the movie to get through it faster. For the time being, it’s only a limited test, but you’ve got a host of other ways to get through your movies and your podcasts more quickly.Admittedly watching Stranger Things at twice the speed takes some of the fun out of it, but what about 1.1x, in certain situations? You’ve got a plane to catch maybe: You could get through three half-hour episodes of a show in a touch over 80 minutes, which gives you some extra time to pack for the trip. With podcasts and audiobooks you can go even faster, because you’re trying to cram the words into your brain, without having to worry too much about artistic or aesthetic intent.YouTube is the obvious place to start: If you’re watching a video on the web, click the little cog icon in the bottom right-hand corner, then choose Playback speed.
