Consider two trillion the starting point. Also important: it s easy to find sites claiming to show a year-by-year progression based on Google s own figures on how Google s searches have increased over time.It s not a perfect estimate, but it s the best I can figure 2001–2003: 55 billion based on reports by Google for its Zeitgeist in 2001, 2002 and 2003 2004–2008: 73 billion based on Google saying it was doing 200 million searches per day in 2004.That s a nine-percent decline.Again, comScore only measures desktop search activity, which has been dropping consistently since 2013, as people turn to mobile devices. If you go with two trillion per year with Google, then the breakdown is like this, in rounded figures:Searches per second: 63,000Searches per minute: 3.8 millionSearches per hour: 228 millionSearches per day: 5.5 billionSearches per month: 167 billionSearches per year: 2 trillionAgain, a caveat.

Experienced marketers know that where high-consideration purchases are concerned, it s normal for customer journeys and purchase cycles to take weeks, or even months. But many AdWords practitioners still look at each search session as the entire relationship with a user when looking at performance reporting. As a result, the sessions that are most highly valued are the ones that typically start with a brand query and are closer to the conversion event than shopper discovery sessions that are typically initiated with a generic category or generic product query.Targeting shoppers in the research phase involves testing generic keywords and category term keywords to discover which ones provide assists to the conversions that happen later on in the customer journey. Some opinions expressed in this article may be those of a guest author and not necessarily Marketing Land.Staff authors are listed here.

As I told Motherboard, it was certainly weird to me.My initial thought was that perhaps because Lying Ted had been out there longer, it had more time to attract enough searches that, in turn, caused it to become a suggested search. But once again, Google Trends debunks this possible explanation:For over a month, Crooked Hillary has been more popular than crooked smile in the US yet crooked smile appears as the top suggested search while crooked hillary does not. When I last wrote about autocomplete in detail about five years ago, Google had told me the reasons below might cause a suggestion to be censored either through an automated or human review process:Hate or violence related suggestionsPersonally identifiable information in suggestionsPorn & adult-content related suggestionsLegally mandated removalsPiracy-related suggestionsSince then, Google still hasn t posted any of these reasons to its site. Then again, the lack of a Trump suggestion could indicate that Bing is somehow favoring Trump. The bigger issue: no favoritism for Clinton in search resultsWhile it s easy to get concerned with Google over this — and it does deserve some criticism, especially when it effectively responded in silence — the bigger issue is whether Google is perhaps slanting search results themselves to favor Clinton.

Part of the fun of being in the SEO space is that we get to play with a lot of crazy tech developed in the name of reverse-engineering Google s algorithms. But there are plenty of other great SEO tools out there to help you get the Local SEO job done, and as part of my monthly indentured servitude to Search Engine Land, I hereby present thee with ye olde Local SEO Guide Local SEO Tool Stack. And of course, Google Analytics, Google Webmaster T — I mean Search Console, Google Docs, Google Page Speed Insights, Google Mobile Friendly Test and whatever other new/updated free thingy Google is offering these days. This tool is indispensable for quick, on-demand site crawls, and they are always adding new features. Some opinions expressed in this article may be those of a guest author and not necessarily Marketing Land.Staff authors are listed here.

These can range from an erroneous implementation of hreflang or JSON-LD to helping a client target territories with no ISO country code – where GEO IP would only get you 60% accuracy and browser location isn t an option. And it is this assertion that I would like to challenge most vehemently, taking four examples from the technical SEO world.A client is going through a migration but doesn t want to shell out for a full service, saying Our development team has done loads of these.People forget to self-reference, use the wrong codes, use incomplete codes, miss just one territory from their list, don t include all versions of the page or simply forget to regularly audit their implementation.More practically it is not just about going through the same tired checklist of robots.txt, 301 redirects and pipes vs hyphens, but about working with all other elements of a broader SEO strategy and with the client s development, marketing, senior management and web teams to present the best possible version of their site to the world.Max Holloway is Senior Search Manager at Pi Datametrics and a contributor to Search Engine Watch
But let s start with Google s official statement that it gave Search Engine Land on this:While we can t comment on ongoing litigation, in general, Google supports and encourages SEO practices that are within our guidelines and don t consider that spam.Google opens by saying it tries to protect its search results from those who seek to manipulate them for their own gain.Knowing that Google does things like publish a guide to SEO, produces videos on it, speaks on the topic and encourages SEO in many ways makes it blindingly obvious that Google doesn t consider SEO within its guidelines to be bad.Reading through the rest of the declaration, it becomes pretty clear that search engine manipulation is indeed being used as a synonym for spam and does not include accepted SEO.If this was a first shot in Google s coming war on accepted SEO, then for over two years now, that s not actually had any impact.About The AuthorGoogle appeals French order to censor Right-to-Be-Forgotten links globallyFlorida court allows Google to be sued by publisher delisted as "pure spam"Copyright bully Getty Images complains to EU that Google coerced it into image searchMississippi attorney general s conspiracy to censor the internet" back on as appeals court rules against Google
Good afternoon/evening from beautiful Seattle, where day one of our sold out SMX Advanced conference is wrapping up with the traditional Google keynote conversation.Follow along as we get going!Without RankBrain, we give interesting results that don t meet my needs.DS: Does RankBrain leverage your existing signals, or is it a new signal? We heard the feedback from SEOs at the Google Dance earlier this year.We re working on making sure Googlebot handles it correctly, but there are browsers that cannot handle it.
Gary Illyes, Google s webmaster tends analyst, said at SMX Advanced that Google has completely stopped using authorship markup, even for use with in-depth articles. But didn t Google stop using authorship in August 2014?Gary Illys clearly said Google does not use authorship at all.He added, we fixed that problem, meaning the need for Google to use authorship.Danny Sullivan, founding editor of Search Engine Land, asked how does Google know who wrote an article.Gary replied that Google knows by reading the content.
He added there are no scores for RankBrain — although he did say he will continue saying what Google has said in the past, that RankBrain is a ranking factor, even though it has no score like page speed, Panda, Penguin and other ranking signals may have.AMP, Assistants & BotsDanny Sullivan asked Gary Illyes to tell SEOs something they should prepare for in the upcoming year or so.He said that AMP is going to be big, and SEOs and webmasters should think now about getting ready for AMP.Currently, Google s search results for desktop and mobile use the same index and almost all of the same ranking signals.HTTPS AdoptionGary Illyes said that 34 percent of the Google index is now HTTPS — which is a very big growth trend for HTTPS.He also strongly recommended that webmasters consider migrating their websites from HTTP to HTTPS sooner, rather than later.
NOTE:Yesterday, news emerged that Google was using a machine-learning artificial intelligence system called RankBrain to help sort through its search results.I thought the Google algorithm was called PageRank PageRank is part of the overall Hummingbird algorithm that covers a specific way of giving pages credit based on the links from other pages pointing at them.It even gained some conceptual smarts, to understand that there are pages about Apple the technology company versus apple the fruit.Entering that query into Google provides good answers, even though the query itself sounds pretty odd:Now consider how similar the results are for a search like top level of the food chain, as shown below:Imagine that RankBrain is connecting that original long and complicated query to this much shorter one, which is probably more commonly done.Google told us that there was a gradual rollout of RankBrain in early 2015 and that it s been fully live and global for a few months now.RankBrain might be able to better summarize what a page is about than Google s existing systems have done.
