Google is expanding its virtual reality ambitions with a new system called Daydream, which encompasses a range of VR-capable Android smartphones, a headset design, a controller and applications. The Alphabet Inc subsidiary will release Daydream this fall, said Clay Bavor, Google s vice president of virtual reality, at its I/O developer conference near its Silicon Valley headquarters Wednesday."Daydream is our platform for high-quality mobile virtual reality," Bavor said.Daydream is designed to make VR ubiquitous by working with current and future versions of the company s Android mobile operating system, the latest of which is code-named Android N."What that means for developers is there are going to be a lot of Daydream ready phones," Bavor said.Companies including Samsung Electronics, Alcatel-Lucent, Asustek Computer, HTC, Huawei Technologies, LG Electronics, and Xiaomi are building phones compatible with Daydream specifications, Bavor said, noting that several will be ready this fall. The company is working with companies like Netflix, CNN, HBO, and Hulu to build new applications for Daydream, he said. Also it s re-writing Google s own software, including Photos, Google Play Movies, Street View, and YouTube, to work with the system.Along with that, Google has created a new controller to help people interact with the VR software and content, for instance sending a virtual dragon swooping up and down in a VR video game.Google s first public foray into virtual reality was Cardboard, which lets people turn phones into virtual reality headsets using a lattice of plastic, Velcro, and compressed paper. It also made enhancements to Android to let the operating system support VR-friendly content, like 360 degree videos.Meanwhile, rivals like Facebook Inc. and companies such as HTC and Samsung Electronics produced their own high-end standalone devices, betting that better graphics and precision would encourage people to shell out several hundred dollars for their own devices, versus as low as $15 for Cardboard. With Daydream Google is taking on rivals using a similar strategy to the way it has used Android to compete with Apple in smartphones -- build great software, marry that to cheaper hardware, and then attach it to an ecosystem populated by as many developers as possible.Today, it s hard to get your hands on a premium VR headset, even if you re willing to drop the $1,500 or so needed for the headset and corresponding computers.
Season 1, episode 6: A Golden Crown -- A Crown Fit for a KingViserys Targaryen was destined to die from the first moment he appeared onscreen.Being the malicious, scheming, incestuous heir to the lost throne of Westeros, Viserys fancied himself a "dragon" that deserved the utmost admiration and respect. After brokering a deal to "sell" his sister Daenerys to Khal Drogo in exchange for an army — with which he planned to retake the Iron Throne —Viserys accompanies Drogo's cavalry to ensure the Khal keeps his end of the bargain. After repeatedly embarrassing himself in front of the Khal and trying to take his sister's virginity , the Khal offers Viserys a golden crown -- which, of course, turns out to be molten.Tough luck for Viserys, but as Dany so eloquently puts it, "He was no dragon.Fire cannot kill a dragon."
Even though Dragon Anywhere can only take dictation inside its own app, it works better than Siri, especially for long chunks of text.Another problem is the limited vocabulary.Dragon Anywhere is particularly great on iPads that support Slide Over and Split View.Dragon Anywhere also has a customizable user-defined dictionary. You also have voice commands, such as scratch that, which removes the last bits of dictated text, and go to end of field, which moves the cursor to the bottom of the text entry field. The export format can be set to text, Microsoft Word, or Rich Text Format RTF .
Louis Slotin, a Canadian physicist, was showing his colleagues how to bring the exposed core of a nuclear weapon nearly to the point of criticality, a tricky operation known as tickling the dragon s tail. The tamper would reflect back the neutrons that were shooting off the plutonium, jump-starting a weak and short-lived nuclear chain reaction, on which the physicists could then gather data.As he began the slow and painstaking process of lowering the tamper, one of his colleagues, Raemer Schreiber, turned away to focus on other work, expecting that the experiment would be uninteresting until several more moments had passed. The hand eventually took on a waxy blue appearance and developed large blisters. They arrived four days after the accident.Three months to the day before Slotin s accident, Daghlian had been working with the very same plutonium core, performing a different criticality experiment that used tungsten-carbide blocks instead of the beryllium tamper.
I was being hyperbolic but the idea of a sequel to the futuristic shoot-em-up has me salivating. This one isn't confirmed yet, but there's news filtering out that Michael Beihn confirmed Blood Dragon 2 during a UK comic.conventionFar Cry: Blood Dragon was an April fools joke made real, a slice of 80's inspired blasting that took all of Far Cry 3's mechanics and put a more actiony spin on them.Far Cry 3's sniper rifle? There's no fall damage, no boring crafting all crafting results in things that explode or otherwise and generally it's just all the fun of a Far Cry without any of the upkeep. At a show today, Michael Beihn, voice of the first games protagonist Rex Power Colt no kidding confirmed that he'd been in the studio recording dialogue for a Blood Dragon sequel, although he didn't talk about what form that might take.
Gamers play Dragon Quest Heroes on the second day of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, known as E3 at the Convention Center in Los Angeles, California on 17 June 2015The annual E3 gaming trade show has long been a mostly industry-only event, open exclusively to the press and industry tradespeople. This year, the Entertainment Software Association, which hosts E3 in Los Angeles every summer, has announced a free, ticketed side event called E3 Live 2016 that will be open to the general public.E3 Live will take place at Los Angeles' LA Live downtown promenade, steps away from the LA Convention Center where the standard E3 show is to be held from 14 to16 June – the same days as the main event.Besides gameplay demos, the event will also feature live music and dance competitions, special appearances, video game goodies and more. The announcement comes as several major publishers announce their own plans to skip E3 and drop their booths on the show-floor this year including EA, Activision, Disney and Wargaming. Many have suggested in the past that opening the show up to the public could help raise the profile of the event — a suggestion that ESA seems to be taking seriously.
We may try on new roles, but it s usually something more mundane like manager or goofy uncle.Gone are the days of pretending to be a rock star or a queen or a dragon. So, I changed my shirt from yellow to blue and became Rick from Rick and Morty. If you ve never been to a geek convention, it can be a jarring experience the first time you see Iron Man hanging out with the World of Warcraft guy in a hotel lobby next to Jayne s giant hat. This was abundantly clear when I went to a Fallout-themed New Year s party dressed as Nick Valentine this past year.By becoming Nick and hanging out with like-minded people, though, I could do it in this bar.

A really quite industrious angry ex-girlfriend has come up with a great way to get back at her hated former partner -- using every messaging service in existence to spam him with Game of Thrones spoilers. The boyfriend turned to Reddit for advice mistake 4 and posted the following explanation in a thread that's since been deleted:Borrowing the phones of sympathetic mutual friends to send him SMS spoilers once all other channels have been blocked is a particularly devious method of attack.Well done, anonymous lady, and also well done to some of the commenters on Reddit at least, who themselves replied to the man's plea for help with... spoilers. In short, he needs to engage aeroplane mode for an hour or so every Monday night to avoid being told who died, got their tits out or turned into a dragon this week, as penance for his infidelity, because his former partner has gone a bit Gone Girl on his arse.Less time on Reddit and your phone, and more time watching the things you're supposed to like.Deadspin Want more updates from Gizmodo UK?

If you're not familiar with Hyperloop One, consider what it would be like to travel on the ground at 760 mph faster than a jet airplane .In 2013, Elon Musk and a group of engineers from Tesla and SpaceX published a speculative design document for a concept they called "The Hyperloop."In other words, it's a "vacuum tube transportation network" that will be able to travel at around 760 mph 1200 kilometers per hour — on land and underwater. They just closed their latest round of funding of $80 million and achieved a major technology milestone last week.He expects the Hyperloop One team will have their real Kitty Hawk moment by the end of this year.Hyperloop One is hosting a global competition inviting teams from around the world to submit a commercial, transport, economic and policy case for their city, region or country to be considered to host the first Hyperloop networks.
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station ISS will tomorrow pump up the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module BEAM - the "first human-rated expandable structure that may help inform the design of deep space habitats".The engorgement is expected to begin at 10:10 GMT 6:10 AM EDT , with NASA TV's live coverage kicking of at 09:30 GMT 5:30 AM EDT .Pic: Bigelow AerospaceAstronauts will first venture into BEAM on 2 June, and then several times a year over the next two years, "to retrieve sensor data and assess conditions inside the module".Once scientists have determined how the structure "protects against solar radiation, space debris and the temperature extremes of space", it'll be cut loose from the ISS and consigned to a fiery death in Earth's atmosphere. The obvious threat to BEAM is high-speed orbiting debris, such as that which chipped the ISS's cupola window. It's unclear whether ISS crew are armed with a space-rated bicycle puncture repair kit to tackle such an eventuality.
Summer has arrived early in much of the country, and in some places with a vengeance, and so too has the need to stay hydrated in the heat.So to help the smallest members of your family and let s be honest, you as well drink enough water, there s a new interactive water bottle that gamifies your children s water intake — the Gululu Interactive Water Bottle.Featuring a screen, a home button, a pair of touch sensors, Wi-Fi, and wireless charging capabilities, it s one of the most high-tech water bottles out there, but also perhaps the most effective. Thanks to a companion app, you can set hydration goals based on your child s age, weight, and location. The closer your child gets to his or her optimal water intake, the healthier the virtual pet becomes — the animated character will grow, collect treasure, and explore an underwater world of adventure known as the Gululu Universe. You can pre-order this futuristic water bottle yourself for the early-bird price of $89 in colors that include Bowhead Blue, Uni-dragon Violet, Submarine Yellow, Monster Green, and Starfish Pink.
Let s watch to find out.The Bigelow Expandable Activity Module, or BEAM, arrived on the ISS back in early-April aboard the same Dragon launch that gave SpaceX its first ever drone ship landing. It was attached by a robotic arm to the space station s outer shell just days after it arrived, and in Thursday s early morning hours, it will finally start to expand.Even with BEAM fully expanded, however, space-crunched astronauts are going to need to wait a little longer yet for some much needed extra floating room. The first astronaut visit into the space cottage isn t scheduled until June 2nd.BEAM s expansion starts at 5:30 a.m. EDT.
Bright and early Thursday at 5:30 a.m.ET, NASA will blow up a giant inflatable habitat on the International Space Station ISS .The $18 million dollar habitat, called the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module BEAM will be the star of a NASA live-stream as it expands into space. As BEAM expands, NASA will also host a live Q on Facebook and an AMA on Reddit. The pod was sent to the ISS in April aboard SpaceX s Dragon spaceship. The goal of the habitat, which will expand to about 6 feet long and 8 feet wide the size of a small bedroom is to give astronauts larger, more comfortable places to live on space missions, in particular ones headed to Mars.Over the next two years, sensors will measure how well the structure maintains safe temperature, pressure, and radiation levels, according to Popular Science.Starting on June 2, astronauts on board the ISS will routinely enter the module to keep track of how it performs in the harsh space environment, Wired reports. At the end of the two years, BEAM will be robotically jettisoned back down to Earth.Expandable habitats take up much less space on a rocket than what we use now, and also provide a "varying degree of protection from solar and cosmic radiation, space debris, atomic oxygen, ultraviolet radiation and other elements in space. If the inflatable habitat holds up to the test of time and space , it will make sending large habitats into space cheaper and easier. So check it out.
There s no rest for the wicked at the Naughty Dog team - despite the recent and well received launch of Uncharted 4: A Thief s End, it seems the team were back to work even before Nathan Drake himself was.Lead game designer for Naughty Dog Emilia Schatz has been looking for new team members to join the studio in creating their next release. With heavy rumours surrounding the possibility of The Last Of Us 2, and E3 just around the corner, there s a lot to be excited for when Naughty Dog break their current vow of secrecy.Still, perhaps we'll see a new I.P.Maybe in the style of the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon team up we'll see a Nathan Drake / Joel team-up where some white dudes with emotions and varying amounts of facial hair will do some things to some people.Oh yes.

Bigelow AerospaceWell, they tried. If long-distance space exploration is going to happen, astronauts are going to need a safe place to set up shop. And if they re going to get very far past the atmosphere without burning through all their fuel, their supplies are going to have to be light.Once inflated, BEAM will spend two years collecting data on its own performance—dealing with things like temperature and pressure and radiation, which is particularly important in deep space.Decreasing the weight of your payload is pretty important if you want to escape the gravity well without carrying excess fuel, and the fact that expandable units collapse into something easily packable is a huge plus for long-term space travel. We need experience before we can build a habitat like the one they have The Martian—but what Matt Damon has in the movie actually isn t too far from reality, Munday says.
Likely rooted in Hollywood s never-ending effort to print money without exercising an ounce of creativity, movie executives always seem keen on taking whatever video game happens to be hot at the moment and turning it into a movie.Even in the face of ridicule and a string of box office failures, we ll likely never see Hollywood stop trying to turn popular video games into hit films.DON T MISS: The iPhone 7 might actually be in troubleSo with the latest video game inspired movie disaster just around the corner read: Warcraft, which is set to hit theaters on June 10 , our sister site Variety recently compiled a list outlining the 7 worst video game adaptations of all time. But was this video game really deserving of a movie?Looking past the atrocity they pulled on the Goombas, this film was such a critical and financial disaster that Hoskins has gone on record saying it was the worst thing I ever did.The trailer for the forgettable 1993 film can be viewed below.
