One of President Trump’s final acts in office is to pardon a former Google engineer who was convicted of stealing trade secrets. Anthony Levandowski worked for Google’s self-driving car division, now called Waymo, before leaving to found Otto, a self-driving truck company that was acquired by Uber. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison in August, with judge William Alsup describing the incident as the “biggest trade secret crime I have ever seen.”
Levandowski was found to have downloaded thousands of files to his laptop before he left Google and entered into sale discussions. Uber ultimately fired him after Google sued, and Levandowski remains in a legal battle with the ride-hailing company, claiming it should be liable for the $179...

Amazon is facing a new lawsuit alleging that a deal between the company and five book publishers has created higher prices on e-books, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The lawsuit filed by law firm Hagens Berman in a federal district court in New York, alleges that the publishers pay high commissions and other costs to Amazon, which in turn increases the retail price of e-books sold on the platform. Due to the deal between Amazon and the publishers— HarperCollins Publishers, Hachette Book Group, Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, and Macmillan — the Amazon price is the price the publishers charge other retailers as well, preventing other sellers from offering the e-books at lower prices, according to the lawsuit.

Parler CEO John Matze claimed in a lawsuit against Amazon that Slack had "canceled their services" based on Amazon's decision.
Parler pushed back on Amazon's claims that it put the app on notice back in November, claiming Amazon didn't express concerns until January 8.
Ride hailing apps like Uber and Lyft were created with a Silicon Valley mindset to “disrupt,” and change how we travel, supposedly for the better. The platforms were supposed to provide alternatives to private car travel and ultimately decrease car ownership. However, a recent study suggests that this isn’t entirely the case and ride hailing apps actually increase car ownership, especially in cities that are already dependent on cars. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford University, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, concluded that services like Uber and Lyft increase private car ownership by an average… This story continues at The Next WebOr just read more coverage about: Uber

A group of Uber and Lyft drivers in California filed a lawsuit Tuesday in state supreme court to overturn a ballot measure that allows the companies to continue treating its workers like independent contractors.
The drivers claim that Prop 22, which was approved by California voters last November, violates the state’s constitution by “stripping” the state legislature’s ability to empower workers to organize, as well as by “illegally” excluding ride-hail drivers from the state workers’ compensation program.
“Every day, rideshare drivers like me struggle to make ends meet because companies like Uber and Lyft prioritize corporate profits over our wellbeing,” plaintiff Saori Okawa said in a statement. “With Prop 22, they’re not just...

According to Ezequiel Reyna, a personal injury attorney, everyone has the right to file a lawsuit, but there may be some challenges along the way regarding vaping, like not having enough evidence.“The science medically has just not caught up with the legal side and the legal requirements that are necessary to file a lawsuit at this time,” said Reyna.Reyna has covered various personal injury cases involving vaping. He said he had one case involving an e-cigarette that exploded in an individual’s mouth due to the battery. While the batteries for e-cigarette products have since been corrected, Reyna said trying to file a case following the reports of lung injuries sets a different challenge.“The injuries themselves are sometimes hidden, and vaping, we don’t know enough about it at this point in time, ” said Reyna.“Medically and scientifically to be able to determine whether that types of injuries [were] caused by the vaping or not.”The attorney said the law has also changed, which makes it difficult for lawyers to file lawsuits without a medical substance to be able to support any claims on behalf of their clients. And if the products are purchased off the streets, Reyna said it’s an even bigger problem.“It compounds the legal ability for us to proceed because we don’t know exactly what’s in the contents and where it came from,” explained Reyna. He adds that these health cases will be lingering for a while, but in the meantime, attorneys will standby.“Hopefully the medical science will catch up so that we’ll be in position, in a year or two years from now, to be able to file lawsuits,” said Reyna. In addition, Reyna said lawyers will do what they call “warehouse” these cases until a scientific connection is found between the legal injuries and vaping.
