Mobile application development trends in 2018 will be a completely different thing - plenty of things have been invented.

There are a few trends and designs we could expect mobile development to go in 2018. Here are a few of them.

1. Internet of Things.

There are many factors that indicate that IoT-based apps will be in great demand soon - just look at how successful TADO (Intelligent AC control) is. Moreover, Statista claims the IoT global revenue to increase dramatically by 2020, so it is one of current trends in mobile applications to watch out.

2. Mobile Payments.

The term first appeared in 2015, when Android Pay, and later Apple Pay were released - products that allowed to send and receive money transfers with no credit cards involved.

3. Same Old On Demand.

The variety of services covered by on demand economy includes everything now (cleaning, food delivery, taxes, beauty and massage services, healthcare assistance etc.) but there are many areas they haven’t turned upside down yet. On demand working space or an on demand fitness coach could might be the next on demand startups appearing.

Uber lost more than $5B last quarter

Uber reported earnings for the second time as a public company, posting its largest-ever quarterly loss.

And while revenue grew 14% year-over-year, that also sparked concerns over (relatively) slow growth.

The company’s stock took a nose-dive of 11% in after-hours trading following the news.

As a result, it has been described as a form of internet marketing, given that it leverages the informal, social aspects of the web to promote services and products of various kinds.

It is commonly used by marketers to enhance consumer awareness and loyalty towards particular brands, or it can be used simply to attract customers. However, social media marketing differs from conventional marketing in several ways.

For one, it leverages the social networks to promote services and products, as opposed to traditional marketing which makes use of the mass media.

In effect, social media marketing takes into account the collective intelligence of the web's users, and capitalizes on this intelligence to generate results.

This is different from conventional advertising, which tends to be personalized to the tastes of the buyer, aiming to create a bond between the marketer and the consumer.Another important difference is that social media marketing tends to bring greater attention to brand messaging, given that it can reach a large audience at any given time.

This is because brands can showcase their best qualities and be advertised in a manner that easily connects with large demographics.

A huge vulnerability in group dating app 3fun has been found by security researchers which allowed anyone to find the personal information, chat data, private photos, and real time location data of any of the other apps’ 1.5 million users.

The discovery was made by Pen Test Partners, who said that 3fun has “probably the worst security for any dating app we’ve ever seen.”

The discovery comes as dating apps are facing renewed scrutiny over the amounts of intensely personal information they hold about their users.

TechCrunch notes that multiple dating apps including Jewish dating app JCrush, conservative dating app Donald Daters, and Coffee Meets Bagel have all reported data breaches in the past couple of years, and there are ongoing concerns over Grindr’s ownership by a Chinese company.

Pen Test Partner’s security researchers discovered that 3fun was storing its users location data in the app itself, rather than keeping it securely on its servers.

This meant it was a trivial task for the researchers to reveal the data on the client side, even when users are supposedly restricting their location data.

We all want to find the best deals online, and the good news is, it's not hard to come by. Almost no one buys online without first looking for a discount, promo code, or coupon of some kind. And people are shopping online now more than ever (in case you don't already know from the physical stores that are disappearing in your local area). This enters the flokoin forums, which provide a fun way to share money saving tips and offers with other users. You can tell the site which categories interest you the most and the least, decide how you want offers to appear, define the stores you prefer to shop at, and show what types of offers interest you most. This saves you a lot of time, so you are not browsing page after page, looking for products and services that do not interest you.

If you can pull off a very specific iPhone hack, Apple has a million dollars for you.

Apple announced a big changes to its bug-bounty program it launched in 2016.

The biggest is a new $1 million reward if you find a very specific exploit.

The $1 million will go to security researchers (or group of researchers) that are able to carry out a “zero-click full chain kernel execution attack with persistence,” Techcrunch reports.

It’s an attack that would result in the hacker getting to the core of Apple’s operating system, iOS, and gaining control of the iPhone in question without any user interaction.

If someone (or several someones) are able to pull the hack off and share how they did with Apple, they’ll get $1 million.

Proterra has authorized shares to raise $75 million, a new round of funding that would push the electric bus maker’s valuation past $1 billion, TechCrunch has learned.

The company authorized the sale of 10,857,762 shares at a price of $6.91 in a Series 8 round, according to a securities filing that was obtained by the Prime Unicorn Index, a company that tracks the performance of private U.S. companies, and reviewed by TechCrunch.

If all of the shares are issued, the company’s total valuation would be $1.04 billion, pushing it into “unicorn” territory, according to Prime Unicorn Index.

Efforts to raise capital come as the company explores an IPO, according to a report last month by Reuters that said Proterra had hired underwriters from Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley.

Prior to this August 2 filing, Proterra had raised a total of $551.77 million in funding from investors that include G2VP, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Constellation Ventures, Mitsui & Co. as well as BMW i Ventures, Edison Energy, the Federal Transportation Administration, General Motors’s venture arm and Tao Capital Partners.

Proterra produces electric buses for municipal, federal and commercial transit agencies; it has a line of electric buses, hundreds of which have been sold, that can travel 350 miles on a single charge.

Food and grocery delivery company Postmates has been given the first permit in San Francisco to test sidewalk delivery robots, according to TechCrunch, paving the way for the company to test the Serve autonomous delivery robot it announced in December.

The permit will let Postmates, which is available in 3,500 cities, expand into a new method of transportation for deliveries.

Postmates claims that the electricity-powered robot, which has Velodyne LIDAR sensors and an Nvidia Xavier processor, can carry 50 lbs and travel 30 miles on a single battery charge.

San Francisco Public Works rules say that permits are valid for 180 days, that each permittee can test up to three autonomous delivery devices, and that each robot being tested must have a human operator within 30 feet for the duration of testing.

As a result, you aren’t going to see hordes of autonomous delivery robots on the sidewalks of San Francisco just yet.

Postmates said in December that it initially planned to roll out the robot in the Los Angeles area and bring it to “key cities” across the US, but according to TechCrunch, no other pilots have been announced.

Every year the great and good (and bad) of the hacker/information-security world descend on Las Vegas for a week of conferences, in which many present their latest discoveries, and every year I try to itemize the most interesting (according to me) Black Hat talks for TechCrunch.

There are far too many for anyone to attend.

In truth there is a lot of extremely good security out there, especially amid the big tech companies, and it keeps getting better, as the market for 0-days (previously undiscovered exploits) indicates.

Most (though certainly not all) of the exploits below have already been reported and fixed, and patches have been rolled out.

All the 4G Modules Could Be Hacked, from Baidu’s Security Lab, recounts the researchers’ investigation of 4G modules for IoT devices — the components which connect machines to the Internet via cell networks, basically.

The results show all of them have similar vulnerabilities” and ends with the equally memorable “how to use these vulnerabilities to attack car entertainment systems of various brands and get remote control of cars.” Extra points for the slide with ‘Build Zombie cars (just like Furious 8)’, too.

Chinese mobile-phone and device maker Transsion will list in an IPO on Shanghai’s STAR Market, Transsion confirmed to TechCrunch.

The registration application and issuance process is still underway, with the specific timetable yet to be confirmed by the CSRC and Shanghai Stock Exchange,” a spokesperson for Transsion’s Office of the Secretary to the Chairman told TechCrunch via email.

STAR is the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s new Nasdaq-style board for tech stocks that also went live in July with some 25 companies going public.

Transsion plans to spend the bulk of its STAR Market raise (1.6 billion yuan or $227 million) on building more phone assembly hubs and around 430 million yuan ($62 million) on research and development, including a mobile phone R center in Shanghai—a company spokesperson said.

Transsion recently announced a larger commitment to capturing market share in India, including building an industrial park in the country for manufacture of phones to Africa.

The IPO comes after Transsion announced its intent to go public and filed its first docs with the Shanghai Stock Exchange in April.
