Google announced Android Wear, a version of its popular mobile operating system specifically for wearables, a little over two years ago.At I/O 2016 earlier today, the Alphabet-owned company showcases a preview of what it calls the biggest platform update yet. They re also redesigning key experiences to be more intuitive and adding things like smart replies, improved handwriting recognition and a new keyboard - all of which are powered by Google s machine learning. In the fitness category, Google is adding automatic activity recognition and the ability for apps to exchange data with each other using the Google Fit API.Android Wear 2.0 also expands the ways you can listen to music during a workout, even if you forget to bring along your smartphone.Google has also published a Material Design guide for Android Wear 2.0 that ll assist developers in creating apps with a uniform design.
Because I think the Apple Watch is a confused, mostly pointless piece of technology. While Google s Android Wear platform does quite a bit less on iOS, I ve found its focus to make the wearable experience much better and it actually seems to work and stay paired with my paired with my phone more reliably. You re really only going to need the adb command line tool but this is the quickest way to get everything set up properly so that your computer and watch can communicate.Don t worry if you don t get immediate feedback. If you want to do this, too, you have a bunch of options:Use the Android Developer Tools you already installed to actually write one from scratch. If you have an iPhone, then DO NOT use an Android app to make one, such as these great and previously-mentioned options from that Gizmodo suggests.
SAP has released a beta version of its Hana Cloud Platform for Cloud Foundry. The software giant yesterday released a Cloud Foundry beta service that works on the Pivotal-inspired open-source cloud.Coming with the beta is support for Java, Node.js, HTML5, MongoDB, Redis, PostgresSQL and RabbitMQ.SAP said this would let developers build apps and services using the combination of Cloud Foundry and SAP s HANA Cloud Platform. Also announced was a cloud edition of its HTML5 Fiori UI environment. It includes monitoring and analytics, ability to manage mobile applications and systems management.
Read a webpage in one window and take notes in another.Instead of requiring a phone to be motionless for Doze to work its magic, phones running Android N will see Doze benefits anytime the screen is off. That might be 5 minutes or it might be 15 minutes, but your communications are completely severed while updates are underway. From Google s documentation:Android N also adds some important new features to help keep users safer and more secure. This means that the next time a user powers up their device, new devices can automatically and seamlessly switch into the new updated system image.Daydream is Google s attempt to take control of the VR experience, which is already seeing fragmentation in these early days.
Google announced two new messaging platforms at Google I/O: Allo, an upcoming application heavily integrated with Google Assistant, and Duo, a video app that showcases live footage from incoming calls before users even pick up.Google told Digital Trends that Hangouts will continue to be supported, and grow, and that every app serves a unique purpose. At the same time, all three new services will offer features not currently seen in Hangouts, some of which will overlap with the platform and others to varying degrees.Messenger is Google s SMS app for AndroidOn Android, users were briefly encouraged to combine Hangouts with their SMS messages, which created a sort of alternative to Apple s iMessenger. It also boasts integration with your phone s camera and photo library, but at its heart, Messenger is a smartphone app for old-school SMS and MMS messages. At one point, Google seemed so set on integrating Google Voice with Hangouts that it prompted users to forward their SMS messages to Hangouts instead of their phones.
The company said it will be releasing the developer edition in Q4 2016, and it s already working on a consumer version that s scheduled to be released next year.Ara has made so much progress this year, it s actually spun out into a new business unit run by Richard Woolridge the chief operating officer of ATAP , Google said.Enabled devices will have six generic slots that can be customized to your heart s desire. The idea of Ara is to ensure that your devices are future-proofed, meaning that the whole upgrade every two years mentality is no longer a thing. When you want to eject it, you can either specify the module you no longer want within the settings app or simply tell Google using your voice.Google is working on giving developers more access to tools that it calls the first truly modular computing platform.Created by former DARPA director Regina Dugan, who has since departed for Facebook, ATAP specializes in projects that could be developed within two years, which is a much shorter time from Google s other innovative program, X, which focuses on moonshots. In previous years, the company has shared details around some of the things it s been working on, including its wearable technology effort Project Jacquard, touch-sensitive textiles Project Soli, and Project Vault, which specializes in encrypting a microSD memory card.Other efforts in the group include augmented reality technology Project Tango, modular smartphone customization effort Project Ara, and a smart contact lens that helps you manage your glucose levels.Google also shared updates today relating to Project Jacquard and Project Soli.
Android Wear 2.0, previewed during the company's I/O developer conference, adds standalone apps, more customizable watch faces and new ways of inputting text. One of the most immediately noticeable changes is the new darker color scheme, which is present throughout the user interface — the redesigned notifications, settings shade and app launcher all take advantage of the darker theme, which makes the whole watch look much sleeker. It also helps reduce that glaring blue light many watches emit in dark rooms .This is particularly significant for iPhone users because it will actually allow them to use third-party apps on Android Wear watches — making Android Wear more of a viable alternative to the Apple Watch.Previously, Android Wear devices were pretty limited due to lack of third-party app support."We ll have a way for people to get apps from the cloud to to their watches so the phone is basically no longer part of the picture," Android Wear product manager Jeff Chang, tells Mashable.
Credit: GoogleWhat is Chrome OS, anyway? There was once a version of the PC game Bastion made with Native Client that worked in Chrome, but it seems it s now been removed from the Chrome Web Store.Native Client has no real links to web technologies at all—it s a sandbox for safely running code written in the C or C programming languages in a browser.Google s announcement touts the growth and advantages of Chromebooks, but says users want to do more: We ve been encouraged by this growth, but our users have often told us that they would like to do even more with their Chromebooks—run more apps, use Office files more easily, connect with a variety of apps, and do more when they re offline.Android devices already want to rely on the web less. You ll be able to quickly find and open an app without installing it—just like a webpage.
It s been a little while since we ve heard much about Project Ara, but Google wasn t going to let an I/O go by without shedding a little more light on the much discussed and formerly Moto-centric modular smartphone platform.Google Engineering Lead Rafa Camargo demoed the system by plugging a camera module in and taking a photo of the audience almost immediately. The system can eject the modules electronically with a simple voice command like, okay Google, eject the camera. The company is starting off with basic modules, including things like speakers and the aforementioned camera, but is already looking into non-standard phone functionality like secondary displays, helped along by an impressive list of co-conspirators, including, Samsung, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Panasonic, Toshiba , Harman and E Ink.It s not just a smartphone, Camargo told the audience, but a purely modular computing platform. The developer version of Ara is set to start shipping later this year.
Each set has its strengths and weaknesses, but until recently, they at least both offered limited compatibility with their rival's software stores. However Oculus wants to describe this update, users have wasted no time in quoting company founder Palmer Luckey's own statement about such issues. The software we create through Oculus Studios using a mix of internal and external developers are exclusive to the Oculus platform, not the Rift itself."Oculus representatives did not respond to questions about Luckey's December statement.Revive was originally built to translate positional calls of a user's x, y, and z axes from one VR software platform to another, as opposed to interacting with any DRM or payment-proof system. As originally launched, Revive required background running of Oculus's app to check for its DRM calls.
EnterpriseDB's latest play to become a leading enterprise database vendor has seen the company reveal the EDB Postgres platform. The open source vendor has chosen to embrace a wide ecosystem of vendors and technologies in order to show that open source is the way forward for enterprise databases.Linster said: "Instead of saying all data has to live in the same infrastructure, we understand that sometimes data is better off sitting elsewhere."In addition to the software connections that EDB is making, it has also developed a partner ecosystem with leading hardware vendors such as IBM, HPE, and Dell.New capabilities that have been added include cloud management support for private cloud use, particularly OpenStack.Linster said that the idea is to simplify management and deployment and to get better access to other vendors, "we don't live in isolation," he said.
Government-backed Digital Catapult has unveiled an open source platform to help content creators track their work on the internet and help protect copyrights. The OPP has now been designed to allow developers to build technologies and solutions around digital asset permissions and licensing. The organisation expects this to fuel sustainable growth across numerous industries in the "fragmented social media age".Elsewhere, for brokers it will act as a mechanism to absorb all digitally trackable assets into one unified technical system, reducing the need for human-to-human negotiations and in turn operating costs.Furthermore, users will get a standardised method for identifying the permission associated to digital assets, while innovators will be able to use an open framework following the World Wide Web Consortium W3C standards for the World Wide Web, allowing for the system to evolve to the innovators needsAndrew Carr, COO at Digital Catapult, said: "Until now there has been no standardised way of communicating efficiently between the content creator, broker and seller, with each party speaking its own language."In today's social media age, where every 60 seconds, 300 hours of YouTube video are uploaded and 216,000 new photos are posted on Instagram, there is an even greater need for a standardised method of communication to help content creators to manage their digital creations and have clear visibility of how, and when, they're being used by other parties."
It has been molded into a cheap Amazon Echo clone, coaxed into streaming movies and TV shows to living room televisions, and has provided the brains for countless Star Trek-inspired home automation systems.A recent addition to the code for Google s Android Open Source Project AOSP , the framework of Google s Android mobile operating system, suggests that official support for the Raspberry Pi 3 may arrive in the coming weeks or months.A custom Raspberry Android build would be a bit unorthodox for Google, admittedly — the search giant s historically limited its Android firmware involvement to partners of its Nexus-branded smartphones and tablets. But sanctioned support for the Raspberry Pi 3 might be perceived as a response to Microsoft s free, stripped-down version of Windows 10, IoT core, for the Raspberry Pi 3, which Microsoft made available late last year. And Android s not exactly new to the Raspberry Pi 3 — a number of developers managed to boot Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the newest version of Android, on Pi devices earlier this year. But an official distribution might contain a level of optimization and polish that unofficial projects lack, and might contain resources and documentation that d make installing Android s more than 1.5 million apps easier.
The White House has been pushing to replace workhorse systems that date back more than 50 years in some cases. But the government is expected to spend $7 billion less on modernization in 2017 than in 2010, said the Government Accountability Office.Part of the problem is finding money to invest in a transition to new systems at agencies across the government. Most of the employees who developed these systems are ready to retire and the agency will lose their collective knowledge, the report said. The federal government runs the risk of continuing to maintain investments that have outlived their effectiveness and are consuming resources that outweigh their benefits. This is not a partisan issue, said committee chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who supports modernizing the government s aging systems, but has not committed to any particular legislation.

Computers that need 8in floppy disks as large as your head are still required to communicate with US nuclear forces.A report into the state of the US government, released by congressional investigators, has revealed that the country is spending around $60bn £40.8bn to maintain museum-ready computers, which many do not even know how to operate any more, as their creators retire. We re not even talking the more modern 3.5in floppy disk that millennials might only know as the save icon.We re talking the OG 8in floppy, which was a large floppy square with a magnetic disk inside it.Shockingly, the US Government Accountability Office said: Replacement parts for the system are difficult to find because they are now obsolete. The Pentagon said it was instigating a full replacement of the ancient machines and while the entire upgrade will take longer, the crucial floppy disks should be gone by the end of next year.
Dubai-based Mark Rofe racked up £1,500 of free Uber rides in a year by using an automated Twitter botNow that everyone has Uber, you would think dishing out sign-up codes to new users in return for £10 of free credit would be almost impossible.Mark Rofe, a British-born digital marketing manager who lives in Dubai, set up a simple piece of software that automatically scans Twitter for anyone looking for referral codes.By treating Twitter's search function like Google, Rofe was able to fine-tune his bot.The bot was then hosted for $5 £3.40 a month on Digital Ocean, a cloud computing platform, and left to do its thing."From Twitter's point of view there isn't really an incentive to close the bot account , it doesn't impact them...I believe my bot is genuinely useful."Rofe would not show us the bot or tweets it has sent, but explained how it "specifically targets users who have included highly relevant keywords which suggest they are looking for an Uber code.
The architecture of the software is modular and offers numerous components, these include the likes of Nova for providing virtual machines upon demand; Swift is a scalable storage system that supports object storage; Sahara is a data processing service for OpenStack managed resources; and Neutron provides network connectivity-as-a-service between interface devices.OpenStack started as a joint project between Rackspace and NASA and is now managed by the OpenStack Foundation, a non-profit entity that was established in September 2012.Rackspace donated the code that powers its storage and content delivery service and production servers, while NASA contributed the technology that powers Nebula, which is an open source cloud computing program that provides on-demand computing power.Since its creation OpenStack has come in for criticism for its complexity, particularly related to installation.Adding to this problem has been a lack of skills available when it comes to installing and managing the system. The OpenStack community has placed a large focus on overcoming these issues with the creation of training and certification programs and work to simplify any complexity.
We like 'any device, any platform', but not UWP, says component vendorJason Beres, Infragistics Senior VP, Developer ToolsKeeping pace with Microsoft's ever-changing developer story has not been easy. The concept of buying pre-built components such as charts and grids to insert into your application remains stronger in the Visual Studio world than outside it.Infragistics invested heavily in Silverlight components back when that was the key strategy, only to see it sidelined in 2010 when the Windows 8 project was getting under way.So the players in the space are iOS, Android and a hybrid experience. The odd thing is that although UWP remains prominent in Microsoft's development platform, it is overshadowed by another strategy, which is to support any device on any platform in order to promote its cloud services, Azure and Office 365.Microsoft's extraordinary upgrade push for Windows 10 suggests that extending the installed base that can run UWP applications is a high priority, but without the mobile element the platform is not compelling.
