The red, white, and blue fireworks came as President Trump formally accepted his renomination on the final day of the Republican National Convention.
Social media around the world lit up over the weekend, discussing the possibility that an asteroid (known as 2018 VP₁) could crash into Earth on November 2. It seemed only fitting. What better way to round off a year that has seen catastrophic floods, explosions, fires, and storms – and, of course, a global pandemic? But you can rest easy. The asteroid does not pose a threat to life on Earth. Most likely, it will sail harmlessly past our planet. At worst, it will burn up harmlessly in our atmosphere and create a firework show for some lucky Earthlings. So,… This story continues at The Next Web

President Trump and the US government have been considering a ban on TikTok over long-held concerns regarding its ties to China, and its access to user data and influence over content moderation. The threat of a TikTok ban would mean that the app's massive US userbase, estimated to be near 80 million, is up for grabs, and US tech companies are already capitalizing with new apps and formats borrowing from TikTok's viral short-form video format. Concerns over national and data security are leveled against TikTok as Facebook, Google, Amazon, and other US tech companies ready to face lawmakers' scrutiny over antitrust issues. In a rare occurrence, the Trump administration and US tech companies have found themselves as allies in the fight against TikTok, as they all come after the China-based app with their own motives. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is coming to Wednesday's antitrust hearing bringing attention to the one issue he and President Donald Trump can actually agree on: China. Wednesday's hearing will see the CEOs of America's most powerful tech companies — Apple, Amazon, Facebook, and Google — in front of Congress as they face hours grilling over any potential violations of antitrust regulations. But even as lawmakers and tech executives are poised to face-off, the two sides have otherwise found common ground in their battle against the social network called TikTok. Zuckerberg's remarks, published Tuesday night, are seemingly catered directly to Trump: The Facebook CEO is preparing to frame Facebook as a story of homegrown American success, whose future is threatened by authoritarian China. While Zuckerberg doesn't harness the same racist and discriminatory rhetoric Trump frequently uses to attack China, the bottom line paints the picture of China as the common enemy. The Trump administration will be watching Silicon Valley's most notable leaders closely Wednesday, but the government's attention has been otherwise monopolized by the potential threats that an app from China could pose. TikTok's roots in China — where the app's parent company, ByteDance, is located — have long raised questions from US lawmakers and security experts about how much access and influence the Chinese government has over user data and content moderation. TikTok has tried to demonstrate it's distancing itself from its Chinese roots, launching a content advisory council to guide policy changes and appointing a US-based CEO in June.  But TikTok's China ties have attracted more attention when earlier this month, both President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo publicly said they were considering a TikTok ban in the US: Trump said the ban would be a way to punish China over its role in the coronavirus pandemic, while Pompeo cited national security concerns.  Since coming to the US in 2018, TikTok has grown into a social media powerhouse and established itself as a staple of internet culture and social interaction for Generation Z. The app has more than 2 billion global downloads, and an estimated US userbase as high as 80 million. It outperforms US-based apps with younger audiences such as Snapchat and Instagram in both new downloads and time spent.  Although the imminent threat of TikTok disappearing from the US has signaled panic among users and creators, it's been a sign of opportunity for Silicon Valley. US-based tech companies have already capitalized on the chaos to lure the app's loyal following to their competing platforms. Big names like Snapchat and Google had toyed with creating TikTok competitors in the past, but have only just recently used the app's uncertain future to roll out viable products. Zuckerberg's Facebook, meanwhile, is  expected to roll out a new TikTok-like format inside of Instagram Stories called Reel to users in the US in early August. Although Zuckerberg will surely face questions Wednesday about whether Facebook's acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp have stifled competition, the CEO won't have to worry about facing issues over Reels' attempt to compete with China's TikTok.  Zuckerberg's attempt to channel Trump's patriotic rhetoric comes as the president's political campaign runs ads on Facebook and Instagram accusing TikTok of "spying" on its users. The accusation is based on research from March showing how apps are able to access content stored on the clipboard — the copy-and-paste feature — of users' iPhones and iPads. TikTok was only one of the dozens of the apps (including) LinkedIn and Fox News caught spying on iPhone clipboards, but that didn't stop the Trump campaign from turning the story into anti-TikTok ammunition. Of the major players who oversee the digital town squares through which Americans interact and disseminate information, TikTok is one of the biggest that won't sit down Wednesday in front of Congress. It won't have to answer lawmakers' questions, but it's sure to be the subject of subtle jabs and implications from the tech CEOs capitalizing on showing off their nationalism in DC.SEE ALSO: Snap is investigating allegations of racism and sexism within the company after some employees complained of a 'whitewashed' culture Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: Pathologists debunk 13 coronavirus myths
Facebook is planning to bring its competitor to TikTok — called Reels — to Instagram users in the US in early August, an Instagram spokesperson told Business Insider. Reels, which has already debuted in India and other select countries, will live inside of Instagram Stories as an option for sharing short-form video content similar to that on TikTok. Beijing-based TikTok first came to the US in 2018 and has grown into an overwhelmingly dominant social platform, outperforming US-based apps that have attracted younger audiences, like Snapchat and Instagram.  Instagram's planned US debut of Reels comes as TikTok's future in the country remains uncertain. The Trump administration recently said it's considering banning the Chinese app in the US, opening the door for US tech companies to roll out new features catered to the TikTok audience. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Facebook will soon debut its competitor to TikTok's popular short-video format to US Instagram users as the Trump administration weighs a country-wide ban on the viral Chinese app. Instagram plans to roll out Reels, a new format that will live inside of the app's Stories feature, to the US in early August, a company spokesperson told Business Insider. Like TikTok, Reels will allow users to record and edit short-form videos with audio and music soundtracks.  Instagram users will be able to create and share Reels to their Stories, and access their short-form videos in a new, dedicated tab on their profiles. Public accounts will have their their videos shared on the app's Explore page, and can choose whether or not their Reels content appear on their profiles and in followers' Feeds. As for similarities drawn between TikTok and Reels, an Instagram spokesperson said in a statement that "no two services are the same." "TikTok specifically has harnessed real consumer behavior, and done amazing things. We've also seen the rise of short-form video on Instagram, and think we can create something in a way that makes sense for our community," the spokesperson told Business Insider. "This responsiveness to consumer demand is competition at work and one of the longtime hallmarks of the tech sector. It increases choice, which is good for people." Facebook first started testing Reels with users in Brazil in November, before rolling out last month to France and Germany. The early August rollout will include the United Kingdom and around 50 other countries, NBC News reported. The debut of Instagram's Reels in the US — and in India in early July, as reported by Business Insider India — comes as concerns over TikTok's livelihood in both countries has created an opening in short-form video-sharing. The Indian government recently banned new user downloads of TikTok and other Chinese apps amid a bloody border dispute with China, where the app's parent company ByteDance is based. TikTok has been facing greater scrutiny in the US over how much access and influence the Chinese government is afforded over user data and content moderation. Most recently, multiple government officials — including President Trump himself — have threatened banning the app. TikTok has more than 2 billion global downloads and an estimated US userbase at as high as 80 million. So far, TikTok has been able to brush off lawmakers' calls for investigations and national security experts' warnings. In June, TikTok appointed a US-based CEO in June to try to distance itself from its Chinese roots. But the imminent threat of TikTok disappearing from the US has already signaled panic among users, and led tech companies to take advantage of the chaos to lure the app's loyal following to their competing platforms. YouTube has started testing its in-app feature for short-form video with a "small group" of people, and developers have discovered Snapchat could be switching out its horizontal swiping motion for TikTok's signature vertical swipe. Smaller apps, like Byte, Triller, Likee, and Dubsmash, have also seen an increase in downloads, according to Reuters. SEE ALSO: Dozens of high-profile Twitter accounts, including Obama, Biden, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Kanye, were hacked in a colossal bitcoin scam: here's the full list Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: Why electric planes haven't taken off yet
The Trump administration recently said it's considering placing a ban on TikTok, the viral app with ties to China through its parent company, ByteDance. In the wake of the threatened ban, competing short-video apps — like Dubsmash, Byte, and Triller — have seen an uptick in their download numbers as TikTok users prepare to migrate to other platforms. The situation has also opened a window for tech companies, including YouTube and Instagram, to roll out new formats and features reminiscent of TikTok in the hopes they can eat into the app's dominance.  Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. The imminent threat of TikTok disappearing from the US thanks to the Trump administration's suggestion of a ban has signaled panic among users, and tech companies are taking advantage of the chaos to lure the app's loyal following to their competing platforms. In just the past week, up-and-coming platforms such as Byte — a product of Vine's cofounder — and Dubsmash, best known for housing the original "Renegade" dance, have risen to the top of app charts. And more established tech giants including Snapchat and YouTube have debuted new features — all which heavily borrow from TikTok's short-form video and scrolling format.  The day President Trump threatened to ban TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, for what he said was punishment for the coronavirus, competing apps that have historically dwindled in TikTok's mainstream shadow saw their download numbers spike dramatically. Byte saw an 126% jump in downloads on July 8, and took No. 1 on the App Store's charts, after generating an average of 1,000 new downloads a day, according to data from app analytics firm Sensor Tower. Data provided to Reuters showed noticeable spikes in downloads for Dubsmash, Triller, and Likee.  Established tech companies no longer see TikTok — with an estimated US userbase at as high as 80 million — as a rising startup, and instead recognize it as a worthy competitor. Big names like Facebook and Google had toyed with creating TikTok competitors in the past, but have only just recently started rolling out viable products. YouTube has started testing its in-app feature for short-form video with a "small group" of people, and developers have discovered Snapchat could be switching out its horizontal swiping motion for TikTok's signature vertical swipe. Instagram, meanwhile, is currently testing a new TikTok-like format inside of Stories, called Reels, in select countries. Although Reels is not yet available in the US, Instagram told Business Insider it rolled out the feature last week in India — a country that makes up 30% of all TikTok downloads, and where the government recently banned new TikTok downloads amid a border dispute with China. Although a ban on TikTok in the US may be nothing more than a threat, creators have formulated contingency plans, and are encouraging fans to follow them to other platforms. A timely glitch last week that briefly made video views and like counts reset to zero only added to the panic.  Since TikTok came to the US in 2018, it's been a dominant force, outperforming US-based apps that have attracted younger audiences, like Snapchat and Instagram. The app has since faced scrutiny over how much access and influence the Chinese government is afforded over user data and content moderation. Does that seem like a good idea?In an age where you literally can't get on an international plane with a bottle of water, shall we let people just walk into a shop and walk out with tubes of gunpowder?Being over 18 is not a measure of being a sane, responsible human being.I'm not saying we should ban fireworks altogether. But random people putting on their own displays with no safety oversight, idiot teenagers throwing fireworks at each other in the street (this happens on my estate every year), people being hit by badly-aimed rockets, animals terrified by the noise and worse (I can't bring myself to go into what people have done to animals with fireworks, but suffice to say it would ruin your faith in humanity for life) – none of that needs to happen. It seems completely insane to me that in an age where the NHS is stretched way beyond breaking point, where fire stations are closed for lack of funding and ambulances are wrecked by drunken idiots, that we think it's worth some pretty whizz-bangs to allow unrestricted sale of explosives for home use.
London's biggest fireworks display is set for next month in Battersea Park, with Huawei providing the after party entertainment.Wandsworth Council has partnered with Huawei for its annual fireworks display to mark the launch of the tech giant's Nova 5T handset. The display is set to be the biggest the city has seen and will be rounded off with the Battersea Park Fireworks Afterparty featuring Rudimental, and Norman Jay.You can, of course, buy tickets to the event for a tenner - although the Early Bird and Super Early Bird options have already been sold out - or you can enter Huawei's competition to win one of 150 pairs of tickets. To enter, just submit your information on the competition's page and follow nay further instructions. You've got until midnight on October 29 to enter, which is tomorrow, so get a move on.
Supermarket giant Sainsbury's is being widely praised this morning for not selling something, thanks to bosses taking a decision not to stock any fireworks across the entire group ahead of this year's bonfire night parties.Sainsbury's isn't saying exactly why it's not bothering with fireworks this year, although it's presumably at least partly in response to a petition from last year that took more than 300,000 signatures from people asking for the sale of the things to be literally banned nationwide.Pick your own reason from the usual list of reasons for the actual reason, like them panicking animals, burning kids, irritating local councillors, being a nightmare to store safely, having to display them really far away from the cigarettes, the need to verify age before purchase and the like.Let's hope this ban doesn't push the sale of fireworks underground and encourage YouTubers to research DIY firework recipes that could incinerate them.No wait, that's another "pro."
With the Wall Street Journal’s report that Google is set to buy TikTok rival Firework generating some industry buzz, it is possible that Computer Business Review’s readers may be asking the question – and wondering if their business should care.So when Twitter shut down micro-video service Vine on January 17, 2017, something had to step into the void.To those with short memories, Vine was a popular social media platform, jam-packed with looping micro-videos of people largely younger than you, performing, pranking, twerking, screaming and more, over 6.5 seconds.Twitter, unable to monetise it as a standalone platform the way it wanted after buying it in 2012 for a reported $30 million, ultimately pulled the plug, bundling the technology into its own video service in 2017.(Critics variously blame Vine’s tardiness in adding new features, the rise of Instagram, and bad management…)TikTok, founded in 2017, is owned by Shanghai-based ByteDance (founded in 2012 by ex-Microsoft engineer Zhang Yiming).
With more than one billion active users, TikTok is one of the fastest-growing social networks in history.Google sees that success and wants a piece of the pie. That’s why, according to The Washington Journal, Google is considering acquiring Firework, a US-based video sharing platform.Firework is currently a part of a suite of apps by Redwood City, California, based company Loop Now Technologies. It has more than one million registered iOS and Android users, and it just launched in India last month.Firework is valued at more than $100 million, while TikTok is a Chinese financial giant valued at $75 billion.
Techjätten Google has been holding talks on the purchase of the new videoappen the Firework, which would serve to strengthen the company's competitive position against the Tiktok. It is reported by the Wall Street Journal referring to the sources.the Firework will allow their users to share self-made videos, which stretches for up to 30 seconds.the Service also aims to attract older users.the Company recently raised $ 100 million in fresh capital.Google are not alone in your interest.

Using X-ray data from NASA’s NuSTAR space observatory, astronomers looked to the delightfully named Fireworks galaxy (NGC 6946) and compared the X-ray sources (shown in blue and green) to the visible light sources (the many stars shown across the image). They were aiming to study a supernova that was occurring in the galaxy and which shows up as the bright blue spot in the upper right. The green blob on the bottom side of the image wasn’t there in their first observations but was seen clearly in a second observation only ten days later. This is very unusual for a luminous X-ray source, and it wasn’t accompanied by a corresponding increase in visible light so it couldn’t be another supernova.“Ten days is a really short amount of time for such a bright object to appear,” Hannah Earnshaw, a postdoctoral researcher at Caltech and lead author of the new study, said in a statement.“Usually with NuSTAR, we observe more gradual changes over time, and we don’t often observe a source multiple times in quick succession.

When you invest in a drone to take some stunning video footage from the skies, you agree to abide by certain rules – and that includes not adding weapons or fireworks to your autonomous flying machine, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has warned. The US agency has issued an update on the matter, seemingly prompted by the sharing of videos by people who've had their drones tricked out with all manner of dangerous equipment.A maximum fine of $25,000 is possible for those who break the rules."Perhaps you’ve seen online photos and videos of drones with attached guns, bombs, fireworks, flamethrowers, and other dangerous items," explains the FAA."Do not consider attaching any items such as these to a drone because operating a drone with such an item may result in significant harm to a person and to your bank account."The term "dangerous weapon" covers a lot of ground and extends to the use of fireworks as well as firearms, and more elaborate weapons like flamethrowers.
The Federal Aviation Administration really wants the public to stop attaching weapons and fireworks to drones.Officials with the agency published a statement about the matter last week, warning that operating weaponized drones is not only dumb and dangerous but also against the law.Anyone caught flying a drone modified with these items faces a huge fine, something that could snowball into more serious punishment if someone gets hurt.Who would put a weapon on a drone?Lots of people, it turns out.If you’re imaging something simple, think again.
The US Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday put out a notice reminding the general public that it's illegal to operate a drone with a dangerous weapon attached.Among the things you shouldn't stick on a drone, according to the FAA: guns, bombs, fireworks and flamethrowers."Perhaps you've seen online photos and videos of drones with attached guns, bombs, fireworks, flamethrowers, and other dangerous items," reads the FAA notice."Do not consider attaching any items such as these to a drone because operating a drone with such an item may result in significant harm to a person and to your bank account."The FAA said flying a drone with a dangerous weapon -- anything capable of causing death or serious injury -- attached violates Section 363 of the 2018 FAA Reauthorization Act.It could violate other state and federal laws regarding weapons and hazardous materials, the FAA said.

In California, we go through three reliable stages of July Fourth celebrations: before the events kick off, we are warned that fireworks are dangerous; then, we enjoy the fireworks; finally, we post the videos to social media of palm trees on fire. There is no safe amount of “tree on fire.” If you have seen even one video of a burning palm, you also know they spit embers, burning fronds, and other debris onto nearby trees and structures.I have come to think of it as an iconic representation of California. The classic palm tree fire video is shot in or near Los Angeles, though the phenomenon is not limited to Southern California. The burning palm tree motif is also repeated on the album cover of Celebrity Skin. The video is slick; the band doesn’t appear to fear the flames.
