Or does Zyxel s corporate focus make for consumer tech that s too unwieldy for most users? On the back of the router are four gigabit LAN ports, and a gigabit WAN port. This is nice, but the lack of USB 3.0 compatibility is a little bit disappointing from a router otherwise so focused on speed. The sidewalk in front of the house, bathed in signals from the neighbors, was weak compared to other routers we ve tested. These results mirrored the Nighthawk X4S almost perfectly, and suggest real-world bandwidth is more likely to be limited by the devices you re using than anything else.Just plug the cable from your modem into the yellow WAN port, then plug another computer into a LAN port, and finally plug it into the power supply.
DocubyteSending a text on an iPhone is an intuitive experience — so intuitive that users take the ease of communication it allows for granted. The action has become so ingrained in our daily habits that 8.3 trillion texts were sent in 2015 alone. But long before the iPhone, and before Steve Jobs founded Apple, rising to success with his rounded, sleek personal technologies, computers weren t so easy to interact with, let alone carry around.Paying homage to the computers of yore, photographer James Ball aka Docubyte teamed up with production company INK to take stylized portraits of machines throughout history, granting the clunky computers a poppy, consumerist sheen, as though they were the subjects of glossy ads.You chose bright, glossy compositions for these photos — why did you choose to juxtapose the composition with the outdated designs?I wanted to restore them to their former glory and recreate a timeless aesthetic akin to the advertising from the past while keeping the images clean, modern and supposedly, studio-based.
Enlarge / OWC's Aura drive for newer MacBook Airs and Pros. The drives come in 480GB and 1TB capacities, and even though they aren't always as fast as original Apple drives, they're fast enough, and they offer capacities beyond what Apple offers on some models. The major caveat that we discovered in our review of the products is that the drives didn't support Boot Camp, making it impossible to install Windows or other operating systems on the drives. Those disheartened by that news will be happy to know that OWC has just released a Boot Camp Enabler tool for the Aura drives and a few of its other aftermarket Mac SSDs that allows the Boot Camp Assistant tool to work just as it normally does.OWC will sell you a 480GB drive for $348 and a 1TB drive for $595.An upgrade kit that includes tools and an external USB enclosure for the original Apple drive costs around $50 extra.

Last year, Apple launched Pencil, a stylus, which in the current situation can only be used with the iPad Pro. However, indications are that Apple will eventually add support for the Magic Trackpad, which makes it possible to use the pen with a Mac computer. Apple has namely been granted a patent in the text and images describing how Apple Pencil can be used with a trackpad. Illustration from Apple's patents. It is not inconceivable that in time we will also be able to use Apple Pencil also with control pads in the Macbook, Macbook Pro and Macbook Air. Image Source: Martin HajekApple has a strong history of taking ideas from third-party and adding them into later releases of iOS and OS X — just ask F.lux, which had its iOS app banned, months before Apple aped the feature and released Night Shift.According to a report in Macrumors, Apple will be integrating a feature into OS X 10.12 that will unlock your Macbook when a designated iPhone is in close proximity. It would also provide another way for Apple to bring its Apple Pay system to OS X — if a nearby iPhone could be used to authenticate transactions, payments could be made much less painful and faster.Giving access to the onboard TouchID sensor would also make card payments more secure. The dream solution would be for Apple to work with developers to get these features in faster, and without having to wait for major system updates. Thanks to the sharing economy, living in five different cities in five years has never been more doable.
Chromebooks are proving to be a shining beacon of hope amongst all the doom and gloom in the PC market.Q1 2016 financial records estimate that Apple sold roughly 1.76 million Macs while Dell, HP, Acer and Lenovo sold nearly two million Chromebooks in the same amount of time. This is good news for Chromebooks, especially when rumors last November suggested Google was going to abandon its Chrome OS platform. However, consider the reality that users can buy roughly five Chromebooks for the price of one MacBook Air.It also took the combined might of four major PC manufacturers to overpower Mac sales. That said, we'll still happy take this silver lining of news in a world of dwindling PC sales.
According to OWC, users can uninstall the enabler once it s no longer needed, or they can leave it installed for future use, as the program does not use system memory or other system resources.OWC offers the Aura SSD in two capacities: 512GB and 1TB, both with usable capacities of 480GB and 960GB, respectively after 7 percent over-provisioning.With the purchase, customers get free support and access to videos that show how they can upgrade the storage on their own.The drive comes packed with a three-year limited warranty. The Mercury Accelsior E2 is a PCIe 2.0-based solid state drive that is offered in 120GB, 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB capacities. The card supports sustained speeds up to 550MB per second, giving that tired old Mac or Windows PC a needed shot of adrenaline.
Chromebooks have eclipsed the MacBook in sales for the very first time this last quarter. While we don t have hard numbers, estimations peg Apple MacBook sales throughout the U.S. over the three months ending April, as around 1.76 million. As with sales of iOS vs Android smartphones, we do need to remember that only Apple makes its MacBooks, whereas with Chromebooks you have the biggest PC sellers in the world pushing different models. But this is still the first time that that collective has managed to outshine Apple s efforts.Of course, it would be nice to have some hard numbers on this, as it would go a long way to explaining what may have caused such a shift and which firms have really benefited from increased Chromebook uptake.Microsoft s biggest hardware developments in recent years have come from the mid-low-cost laptop and two-in-one markets, with its Surface line doing particularly well.
Open the flap and you ll find a soft, microfiber lining that cushions your device and cleans off smudges. The interior is seriously plush, and there are two zippers that can open the sleeve all the way round so it can be laid flat. The rubberized, poly-carbonate brackets protect the sides and corners of your laptop from falling damage, while the textured rubber feet help prevent your computer from sliding on slick surfaces. There s a magnetic closure that seems pretty secure, and soft-padding on the inside. It also has feet on the bottom to elevate your MacBook when you place it on a flat surface and help prevent slipping.Buy one now from:For the most hardcore bibliophiles, Twelve South has created the BookBook, a case made of genuine leather that looks like — you guessed it — a book.
Back in March, OWC released their first SSDs that were compatible with mid-2013 and later MacBooks.Normally, this wouldn't even be worth mentioning, except for the fact that these were the only aftermarket drives that were compatible with these laptops.Since Apple charges a premium on storage space in all of their products, it's not uncommon for someone to want to buy a laptop with a smaller drive, with the intention of upgrading it later. However, what you couldn't do was dual-boot the system to run Windows with all of them. The new driver is called the Dual Boot Enabler for Apple Boot Camp. The update is completely free, and should make MacBook users happy with the knowledge that they can update their SSD without having to sacrifice any functionality to do so.
WWDC 2016 is just around the corner, and we've already heard rumours of new Macbooks and Siri finally appearing on OS X.Now, a report via MacRumours seems to suggest that Apple is gearing up to announce another new feature for the upcoming OS X update.According to the report, the update could bring Touch ID support to the operating system, with a new auto-unlock feature that would allow you to unlock your Mac using your iPhone when the two are in close proximity. As MacRumours points out, auto-unlock for OS X 10.12 could work in much the same way as an existing function which allows an unlocked iPhone to control an Apple Watch without having to enter a passcode. With this new functionality, Touch ID could also be used to confirm Apple Pay transactions, which are rumoured to be coming to web browsers in the near future.VIDEO: 2015 Macbook Pro 13-inchDo you want to see Touch ID support for OS X?

Just as high-end, thin-and-light PCs from the last five or six years have mostly been cast in the mold of Apple s MacBook Air, convertible PCs from the last year or two have been redefined by Microsoft s Surface. After a few less-than-satisfying versions of the idea, Microsoft found an acceptable balance between tablet and laptop with the Surface Pro 3, and it carried that design forward into the Surface 3 and Surface Pro 4 with few fundamental changes. It makes other tradeoffs, of course, but if you ve been waiting for a Surface that you can actually upgrade and fix, this might be the tablet for you.HP s tablet isn t going to match the Surface s performance, either, at least not in the high end.It s time to start making them standard, especially in machines that start at just under $1,000.On the other hand, a combo Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port gives you more bandwidth and more flexibility and opens the door to more versatile accessories later on as Thunderbolt adoption grows.
Apple is planning to refresh its MacBook Pro line of laptops with thinner and lighter models in the fourth quarter of this year, according to a new report. There will be 13-inch and 15-inch models, both of which will feature a new OLED display touch bar and the Touch ID feature that thus far has only been available on iOS devices, according to 9to5Mac, which cited respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and unnamed sources. The design of the new laptops will be influenced by that of the 12-inch MacBook, which was recently refreshed with sixth-generation Intel Core M processors and faster integrated graphics.Like the 12-inch MacBook, the new MacBook Pros will support the USB-C standard no word if there will be more than one port .There will also be support for Thunderbolt 3 for connecting with peripherals, such as external displays — that feature is missing from the 12-inch MacBook. The powerful but big and clunky MacBook Pro — last updated in 2012 — has sorely needed a refresh. Some had suspected that it would happen in 2016, but now there is clear information coming from Kuo.In March, Kuo was reported to have said that Apple would refresh the iPhone lineup in 2017 .In addition to the new MacBook Pros, Apple will also come out with a new 13-inch MacBook that will sit alongside the 12-inch MacBook, as reported by 9to5Mac.
But these laptops should come in a thinner and lighter design, bringing it closer to the MacBook Air.The retina MacBook Pro is roughly as thick as a USB port, or a Thunderbolt port, or an HDMI port — these three types of ports are more or less the same thickness. The answer is USB-C. Apple is already using this thinner USB standard in the 12-inch MacBook with a retina display. And it looks like the company doesn t want to stop there.According to these reports, Apple is also thinking about adding a Touch ID sensor right on your Mac.Apple could be adding a tiny OLED touchscreen above your keyboard thanks a new, smaller metal-injection molded hinge.
Apple has released the first beta of iOS 9.3.3 to all registered developers with the companyApple has released the first beta version of iOS 9.3.3 to developers for iPhones, iPads and iPod touch along with OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and tvOS 9.2.2 beta version for Macbooks and Apple TV respectively. The features of the iOS 9.3.3 update if any are not yet known as Apple just mentions minor bug fixes and improvements in its release notes. After the company had released the iOS 9.3.2 update to the public last week, the 9.7in iPad Pro in question was plagued by the "Error 56" issue that could not be solved by a troubleshoot mechanism suggested by Apple.Apple thus pulled the software for that tablet and it seems it still has not released any update to fix it.These updates too should make their way to registered public beta testers soon. While the iOS 9.3.3 beta 1 is identified as build 13G12, the Macbook update for OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 beta 1 carries build number 15G7a and tvOS 9.2.2 beta 1 depicts build number 13Y807.
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo at KGI Securities and 9to5Mac citing their own sources , Apple will introduce a "dramatically overhauled" MacBook Pro later this year, probably in Q4.This will coincide with the lucrative back-to-school programme in the US which also kicks off the three-month run to Christmas .Taking a leaf out of the new MacBook's book, it will feature a "thinner and lighter" design with its curved bottom likely to be trimmed.Fat with all the trimmingsThis being a Pro laptop, ports are likely to remain untouched with more powerful Intel Core i5/i7 processors and a discrete graphics card. The laptop is likely to be available in 13-inch and 15-inch form factors with physical function keys replaced by an OLED display touch bar, together with metal injection moulded hinges, Touch ID, USB-C and Thunderbolt 3.Check out our review of the current Apple MacBook Pro
