With just a week to go until the new series of the Great British Bake Off gets going, Channel 4 has introduced us to the new bunch of amateur bakers. The upcoming series was filmed in total secret over the summer, with 12 brand new contestants joining the “Bake Off bubble” and competing in that famous tent for the seal of approval from Prue Leith and... whatever the pandemic equivalent of a handshake from Paul Hollywood is.Fancy getting to know them a little better before the series begins? Oh, go on then…DavidAge: 30Job: Armoured guardFrom: HampshireBaking speciality: Bread (pretzels, brioche rolls and baguettes are apparently his special favourites)Best memory from filming: “I remember meeting Matt Lucas and realising that he was as nervous as I was being there. Meeting Noel was a lifelong dream so meeting him was something I won’t forget!”Anything else we should know: David apparently likes to listen to punk rock music to get in the baking mood, a tip he apparently picked up from Mary Berry (yeah alright, we made up that last bit). HermineAge: 39Job: AccountantFrom: Benin, now lives in LondonBaking speciality: High-end patisserie (especially intricate offerings like millefeuille, éclairs and entremets)Best memory from filming: “Getting to know the other bakers and forming bonds.”Anything else we should know: Hermine describes herself as “a notorious feeder with an infectious laugh”, which we can’t wait to hear, frankly. LauraAge: 31Job: Digital managerFrom: KentBaking speciality: Her decoration is her strong suit, and is “proud to have mastered the art of piped buttercream flowers”.Best memory from filming: “My fondest memory was also my most stressful one! When I ran out of ganache – Sura came to my rescue and helped me with about a minute to spare. She was amazing and I knew there and then I had a friend for life.”Anything else we should know: Laura is a huge musical theatre fan, and got a little starstruck when she met Bake Off host Matt Lucas, who she’d seen in Les Misérables a year before filming. “I made a bit of a fool out of myself,” she recalls. “I think my first words to him were ‘OMG I LOVE YOU’.”Linda Age: 61Job: Living team leaderFrom: East SussexBaking speciality: Sausage rollsBest memory from filming: “Meeting the other contestants on the first day, we were all there to compete for the coveted accolade yet I didn’t feel we were in competition with each other.  I felt grateful and privileged to be in the mighty tent with so many talented bakers and a bit star struck meeting Prue, Paul, Noel and lovely Matt. I couldn’t believe I was there, it could only be my love of baking and how it pleases me to feed others that shone through at the auditions!”Anything else we should know: Linda’s love of baking dates back to her childhood, when she would pay a visit to her aunt’s dairy farm. After milking the family cows, she’d use the milk in her early bakes. LorieaAge: 27Job: Diagnostic radiographerFrom: Jamaica, but now lives in DurhamBaking speciality: Jamaican pattiesBest memory from filming: “How supportive we all were to each other, despite coming from various backgrounds. Basically, it was like catching up with long lost friends.”Anything else we should know: Loriea admits she rarely follows a recipe without putting her own spin on it, and loves adding “coconut, chillies and cinnamon” into her bakes.  LottieAge: 31Job: Pantomime producerFrom: West SussexBest memory from filming: “We were all nervous about making a cake bust of our celebrity heroes and knowing that we were all in the same boat was really reassuring! As a group we got really close really quickly because we were all living together and that made it feel extra special.”Anything else we should know: Lottie says it’s important for her to incorporate as much of her “dark sense of humour” in her baking as possible. Makbul Age: 51Job: AccountantFrom: Greater ManchesterBaking speciality: Puff pastry and traditional Asian nankhatai biscuitsBest memory from filming: “My fondest memory of week one would be firstly getting together as a group and how we all clicked. Cybersecurity has faced a shortage of tech talent for years, making its jobs market especially attractive.  Last year, Silicon Valley's Palo Alto Networks was named the highest-paying company, setting a standard for security companies.  Even non-tech roles in cybersecurity, such as marketing, can offer salaries of up to $300,000, data shows.   Here's a sampling of what Palo Alto Networks, Okta, FireEye, Trend Micro, McAfee, Netskope, CrowdStrike, and Cloudflare pay new hires, based on disclosure data for permanent and temporary workers filed with the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification in 2019. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. There are 350,000 cybersecurity job listings on LinkedIn, according to a recent study. And in a country with 10% unemployment, the Commerce Department has launched a project not to create cybersecurity jobs, but to fill them. Simple supply and demand would then suggest that the pay for cybersecurity professionals would be pretty good. And recent statistics from the federal government back that up. Business Insider analyzed the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification's 2020 disclosure data for permanent and temporary foreign workers to find out what eight major players in cybersecurity — Palo Alto Networks, Okta, FireEye, Trend Micro, McAfee, Netskope, CrowdStrike, and Cloudflare — pay tech talent in key roles including engineers, developers and data scientists. Companies are required to disclose information, such as salary (or, sometimes salary range), when they hire foreign workers under the H1-B visa program, giving insight into what these major companies are willing to shell out for talent. Palo Alto Networks, a Silicon Valley cybersecurity firm of around 7,000, was named the best-paying company among all industries in a ranking last year, and that sets the standard for cybersecurity. One interesting thing to note in this sampling of salaries – especially as remote work continues – is the fluctuation in pay for similar roles in different states. An engineer in Georgia could make up to $100,000 less than one in California, according to the data reviewed by Business Insider – a savings companies are increasingly investigating.  All companies named in this story declined to comment, with the exception of CrowdStrike. You can read CrowdStrike’s statement below. Here's how much these top cybersecurity technology companies paid employees hired in 2020:Palo Alto Networks hired a VP of Americas field marketing for $300,000. Named the best-paying company in a Glassdoor ranking last year, Palo Alto Networks specializes in creating security systems for companies and organizations to prevent cyberattacks. Palo Alto Networks earned the top spot in that ranking with a median total salary of $170,929. The company bills itself as "the world's largest cybersecurity company," with 70,000 customers and revenue in fiscal year 2019 of $2.9 billion. At the time of writing, its market cap is at about $26 billion. Here are some recent Palo Alto Networks hires based on 120 approved visa applications and how much they're paid: Vice president, Americas field marketing (California): $300,000 Director of product marketing (California): $213,200 Principal software engineer: $200,000 Senior software engineer: $180,000 Data scientist (California): $125,000 Technical support engineer (Texas): $87,250    Okta hired a chief security officer with a salary range of $241,696 to $350,000. Okta, a $26 billion San Francisco identity and access management company, has seen its stock double during the COVID-19 pandemic as the identity-security sector booms during remote work. The company applies its multi-factor authentication tools to help the IT department make sure that the right employees have access to the right applications and data. Cofounder Frederic Kerrest recently told Business Insider his strategy for hiring during the economic downturn: "Keep your eyes open for strong talent hit by hard circumstances. Anyone who's worked at a company that's gone through COVID-19-related layoffs knows even your hardest-working or smartest employees can't always stay with the business in a tough economic climate." "While this is unfortunate, it means more talented people are looking for jobs right now and if you're building a team, you can offer them an entrepreneurial opportunity."  Here are some recent Okta hires based on 75 approved visa applications and how much they're paid: Chief security officer (California): $241,696-$350,000 Software engineer (California): $196,300-$239,900 Manager, quality assurance: $165,027-$200,100 Salesforce engineer (Georgia): $121,077-$127,900 Software engineer (Washington): $107,100-$130,900 McAfee hired a director of security operations with a salary between $186,493 and $255,500. McAfee is one of the largest pure-play cybersecurity companies remaining, as big multi-faceted companies like Microsoft and smaller startups begin to dominate the industry. McAfee splits its roughly 7,000 employees mostly between two main locations – one in Silicon Valley, and the other in Texas. Chief People Officer Chatelle Lynch believes the many openings in cybersecurity make it a hot job market even for candidates who lack training, and McAfee currently has 200 job openings.  Here are some recent McAfee hires based on 27 approved visa applications and how much they're paid: Director of security operations (Texas): $186,493-$255,500 Manager of software engineering (California): $154,669-$256,000 Manager of marketing communications (California): $126,568-$199,000 Application developer (California): $108,784-$193,500 Software engineer (California): $97,302-$168,500  Netskope hired a software engineer, level IV with a salary between $185,000 and $215,000. $3 billion Netskope, which helps companies monitor and secure how their employees are using cloud software, joined three publicly traded companies in a "cloud security alliance" in June – in what amounted to a challenge of the biggest firms, including Microsoft. That should give some kind of signal on Netskope's ambitions in the cybersecurity space. Records show the company is investing in engineering talent, with pay for its top engineering job at around $200,000. Here are some recent Netskope hires based on 32 approved visa applications and how much they're paid: Software engineer IV (California): $185,000-$215,000 Software engineer III (California): $135,000-$170,000 Software engineer II (California): $108,784-$135,000 IT project manager II (California): $98,961-$115,000 Business operations technical analyst II (California): $72,280-$95,000 Cloudflare hired a customer success engineer at a salary range between $100,000 and $110,000. Cloudflare has boomed during the hybrid work movement, which it met with a coworking project to help struggling businesses. The 1,200-person company, which focuses on security and internet performance,  has "been building up those ideas together – performance and security. And now, all of that is coming together," analyst Jonathan Penn told Business Insider earlier this year. Cloudflare stock has more than doubled this year, giving it a valuation of $12 billion, and the company's success is resulting in growth. The company has around 200 open jobs on its careers site, and doubled its intern class this year.   Here are some recent Cloudflare hires based on 12 approved visa applications and how much they're paid: Systems reliability engineer (California): $155,000-$175,000 Systems engineer (Illinois): $130,000-$150,000 Solutions engineer (New York): $120,000-$130,000 Customer success engineer (California): $100,000-$110,000 Market research analyst (California): $90,000-$110,000 CrowdStrike hired a senior software engineer with a salary of $200,000. CrowdStrike turned a profit for the first time in Q1, and the threat-hunting company – which proactively looks for issues on networks and employees' computers – has seen its stock double this year. The Silicon Valley firm lists more than 200 job openings on its careers site in more than a dozen countries. Records show it has hired mostly engineers. Asked about the $200,000 salary for an engineer shown in the records, JC Herrera, chief human resources officer at CrowdStrike, said: "Yes, we definitely see pay for engineers in cybersecurity reach that level, especially for more senior roles and especially in the [San Francisco] Bay Area and other tech hot spots. In our experience, good engineers will always see healthy salaries. For us, we've had a record number of accepted offers, and applications have been up during COVID-19. We are continuing to hire." Here are some recent CrowdStrike hires based on 13 approved visa applications, and how much they're paid: Senior software engineer (California): $200,000 Engineering manager (Washington): $185,000  Data integration architect (California): $170,000 Director of corporate events (New York): $146,000 FireEye hired a director of engineering at a salary range of between $212,000 and $316,100. Famous for its investigations of nation-state hacking, Silicon Valley company FireEye has grown quickly since its 2004 founding to around 3,400 employees. FireEye sells cybersecurity products for enterprise networks, email and endpoints, such as laptops and mobile devices. It also provides consulting services and threat intelligence – both of which are labor-intensive. Here are some recent FireEye hires based on 31 approved visa applications and how much they're paid: Director of engineering (California): $212,000-$316,100 Principal engineer (California): $166,700-$271,600 Senior business analyst (California): $140,900-$200,700 Staff systems engineer (Virginia): $129,000-$178,000 Financial planning analyst (California): $92,000-$109,600 Trend Micro hired a business process analyst for a salary range of between $72,000 and $97,324. Trend Micro has over 6,700 employees in 65 countries, and has expanded its global reach over its 30-year history. It has a broad array of products, from enterprise products for large companies and government organizations to cloud computing security to research of cyberattacks, and consumer products. That "cross-generational blend of threat-defense techniques," as the company describes its products and services, means a need for lots of tech talent.  Here are some recent Trend Micro hires based on 23 approved visa applications and how much they're paid: Manager, business development (New York): $150,000  Senior software engineer (Texas): $110,000-$130,000 Customer service manager (Texas): $96,470-$100,000 Customer service engineer (Texas): $79,560-$81,600 Business process analyst (Texas): $72,000-$97,324

It's actively recruiting for roles including a head of audiobooks, which is a newer audio initiative for the streaming company; a creative lead to help design tools for podcast creators; a data analyst who will work with the publishing royalties team; and a research manager who will help the company innovate in now it measures for advertisers. Spotify has offered six-figure salaries for some similar roles this year, recent disclosure data shows.  Business Insider analyzed disclosure data for permanent and temporary foreign workers that was released by the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification to gauge what the company offered to pay foreign staffers it sought to hire in the US through work visas. The public data include wages from roughly 47 foreign-labor certification applications that were submitted by Spotify and certified from October 2019 through June 2020, which represents the start of the US government's fiscal year through its third quarter. The vast majority of the applications were for roles based in New York, though Spotify had a few submissions for jobs in Boston, Massachussetts; Miami, Florida; and Los Angeles, California. The wages in the disclosure data are the minimum amounts the company attested in foreign-labor certification applications to pay specific workers, according to US Department of Labor documentation. The salaries are based on the average compensation that similar employees in each given job, industry, and with comparable qualifications are paid, which is known as the "prevailing wage." Companies may choose to pay employees more than the figures reflected in this data, or compensate them in additional ways, like through stock options and grants. Spotify, for example, has an incentive program that offers staffers grants, which they can put toward stock options, cash bonuses, or restricted stock units. Here's how much Spotify offered permanent and temporary workers in key roles from the start of the US government's fiscal year through its third quarter. NASA has stowed a solar-powered helicopter in the belly of its Perseverance Mars rover, which is set to launch Thursday morning. The helicopter, called Ingenuity, is programmed to conduct the first controlled flights ever on another planet. Ingenuity and Perseverance will both record video as the helicopter flies across an open Martian field. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. NASA's new Mars rover, set to launch Thursday morning, has a miniature helicopter tucked inside its belly.  Perseverance will be NASA's fifth rover to Mars, but its helicopter stowaway, called Ingenuity, will be the first spacecraft of its kind. About two months after the rover lands, it's programmed to lower the helicopter to the Martian surface, back away, and watch as the tiny drone carries out a series of test flights. If successful, these will be the first controlled flights ever conducted on another planet. Ingenuity is just a technological demonstration, but it could kick off a new approach to exploring other planets. "In the future, it could transform how we do planetary science on these other worlds, and eventually be a scout so that we can figure out where exactly do we need to send our robots," NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a press briefing on Monday. Here's how the Ingenuity helicopter works. The first drone footage from Mars Even for a 4-pound machine like Ingenuity, the thin Martian atmosphere makes flying difficult. The air has just 1% of the density of Earth's atmosphere. "The first and foremost challenge is to make a vehicle that's light enough to be lifted," MiMi Aung, who leads the helicopter project at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, explained in a video about the spacecraft. "The second is to generate lift." To catch enough air, the helicopter's four carbon-fiber blades have to spin in opposite directions at about 2,400 revolutions per minute — about eight times as fast as a passenger helicopter on Earth. To power all that spinning, solar panels on top of the spacecraft will soak up the sun's energy. "It's a balance of a very light system, yet having enough energy that's needed to spin the rotors so fast to lift, and on top of it having to design in the autonomy," Aung said. Because communicating with spacecraft on Mars takes a few minutes, ground controllers on Earth can't direct Ingenuity's flight in real time. So engineers have already designed and programmed five flights for the helicopter to carry out autonomously in spring 2021. The first flight will just test that the helicopter can get off the ground and hover 3 meters (10 feet) in the air. From there, each test will be more difficult than the last, culminating in a final flight that could carry the helicopter over 50 meters (160 feet) of Martian ground. Two cameras on the underside of the rover will capture footage of the Martian surface below — one in color, and one in black and white. Perseverance will look on with its own cameras, allowing the helicopter and the rover to record each other. "Imagine looking from Perseverance out at a helicopter that is flying around Perseverance, and the helicopter is looking back at Perseverance getting us images of what Perseverance is doing," Bridenstine said. "We're going to be able to see with our own eyes, with motion pictures, these kind of activities happening on another world. And I just can't tell you how excited I am." NASA already has plans to send at least one helicopter to another world beyond Mars: A mission planned for 2026 would send a nuclear-powered rotocraft to search for alien life on Saturn's largest moon, Titan. "What's really most important is everything we're learning here is for the future rotocraft systems that we want to introduce into space exploration," Aung said. Getting the helicopter to Mars requires a 'magic trick' NASA's Associate Administrator, Thomas Zurbuchen, proposed the helicopter late in the rover's design. But the team behind the machine was excited about the idea. "I told Thomas, whatever you can do to make that happen, I'm all for it," Bridenstine said. By that time, the top of Perseverance was already full of instruments and equipment. There was very little room to squeeze in a whole new machine. "Kind of late in the game, we were asked to accommodate this little thing called the Mars helicopter," Matt Wallace, the Perseverance deputy project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in the briefing. "We had to do a little bit of a magic trick to get that one on the rover. We pulled a bit of a rabbit out of the hat." Since the underside of the rover had a stretch of free panel, engineers tucked the light, compact helicopter inside. Lockheed Martin, one of NASA's contractors, built the system that will lower Ingenuity to the Martian ground. Around two months after it lands, Perseverance will drop the shield that covers the helicopter. The rover will then drive to whichever flat, debris-free field the missions managers have selected for flying Ingenuity. After six days of checking out all the robot's systems, mission managers will send the signal to release Ingenuity. A small electric motor, a spring-loaded arm, and a pyrotechnic device will slowly twist the helicopter away from the rover into an upright position, then drop the drone 5 inches to the ground. The 19-inch-tall helicopter will have about 26 inches of clearance below the rover's belly. For now, this complex delivery system lies in wait. "The helicopter team delivered their system, and it's sitting up with the Perseverance rover on top of our Atlas V rocket getting ready to go to Mars with us," Wallace said.SEE ALSO: The United Arab Emirates launched a mission to Mars on Sunday. NASA is about to send its next rover to Mars: a nuclear-powered robot called Perseverance. Perseverance is expected to record the first high-quality video and audio of Mars, drill rock samples that could contain signs of alien life, and deploy the first interplanetary helicopter. Here's how NASA's newest Mars rover works. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. NASA is gearing up to launch its next Mars rover: an SUV-sized, nuclear-powered robot decked out in cutting-edge equipment. Perseverance, the fifth rover the US has sent to Mars, is set to complete tasks that the previous robots could only dream of. The $2.4 billion vehicle is designed to collect unprecedented video and audio, drill samples of Martian rock and soil for later return to Earth, search for chemical remnants of ancient microbial life, and test out technologies that future astronauts will need on the red planet. The rover is scheduled to launch at 7:50 a.m. ET on July 30, atop an Atlas V rocket. Its seven-month, 314-million-mile  (505-million-kilometer) journey to Mars is slated to end in the Jezero Crater — one of the largest impact craters on Mars. A giant jetpack is built in to lower Perseverance onto the site, where some of the planet's oldest rock is laid bare. Here's how the mission will work.  Martian rock samples could contain evidence of alien life Perseverance's mission calls for it to mine Jezero Crater's ancient rock for chemical signatures of ancient alien life. Rocks that formed in water, for example, could have preserved the remains of chemicals that only life can create. Such rocks may be plentiful in the Jezero Crater exposed layers. A special arm of the robot is designed to drill cores from those rocks and cache them on the planet's surface. "Samples from Mars have the potential to profoundly change our understanding of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life on Earth and elsewhere in the solar system," Lori Glaze, Director of NASA's Planetary Science Division, said in a briefing on July 17. NASA plans to launch another rover to retrieve those samples in 2026. The fetch rover would collect the tubes and carry them to a rocket, which would then launch them into Mars's orbit. There, a spacecraft circling the planet would catch the samples and carry them back to Earth. "If it sounds complicated — it is," Glaze said. But this rover has more immediate, straightforward goals, too. The first interplanetary helicopter will drop from the rover's belly About two months after it lands, Perseverance is set to drop a small helicopter from its belly. NASA has programmed the helicopter, named Ingenuity, to demonstrate the first powered flight ever conducted on another planet. If successful, four carbon-fiber blades will spin eight times as fast as a standard helicopter on Earth, lifting Ingenuity off the ground and carrying it through the thin Martian atmosphere. Ingenuity weighs just 4 pounds, since the Martian air is just 1% of the density of Earth's atmosphere. Perseverance will beam back high-def video of a Mars landing For the first time, NASA plans to film the entire landing of a Mars rover in high definition. "Those cameras will be taking high-definition video of the spacecraft during entry, descent, and landing activity. So we should be able to watch this big parachute inflate supersonically, we should be able to watch the rover deploy and touch down on the surface," Matt Wallace, the deputy project manager for Perseverance, said in the briefing. "This is going to be very exciting. It's the first time that we have ever been able to see a spacecraft landing on another planet." The rover's 3D cameras can also take high-definition photos and high-speed video as it roams the Martian surface. Two cameras on the mast are programmed to identify rocks and soil for the rover's other instruments to investigate or collect and stow. The cameras should also help scientists observe details in Martian rock and sediment. Perseverance will carry microphones as well. If the devices work, they'll enable NASA to record the first bonafide audio of Mars, including gusts of wind, the rover's wheels rolling over soil and rocks, the sounds of drilling, and more. Previous Mars missions also brought microphones with them, but as Nancy Atkinson wrote for The Planetary Society, those were a "huge let-down" — they either failed or never activated. Perseverance will test technologies to keep astronauts alive to Mars NASA ultimately aims to send astronauts to Mars and set up a settlement there. (Elon Musk, who is developing a spaceship that might be able to carry people to the red planet, hopes to put boots there in 2024.) But NASA first needs to figure out how to meet the needs of any future Mars-dwelling people: oxygen, food, water, and fuel. Perseverance will help the agency test some options. One of the rover's projects, called the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE), will attempt to convert Martian carbon dioxide into oxygen that future astronauts could breathe. About 95% of the red planet's atmosphere is CO2, so successfully converting it to oxygen would be a big win for future Martian settlements. Abundant oxygen would also help astronauts produce new rocket fuel for the journey home. Five small pieces of spacesuit material, including a piece of helmet visor, will also travel to Mars aboard the rover. One of the robot's instrument will track the materials' reaction to the Martian environment, to inform future Mars-spacesuit designers.  The rover will also collect data that could help scientists better predict Martian weather — an ability that will be crucial to survival on the planet's harsh surface.SEE ALSO: NASA plans to bring astronauts back to Earth in SpaceX's Crew Dragon spaceship on August 2. Some time ago, project management was represented by three things: a pencil, a piece of paper, and a methodology. With the introduction of project management software a few years ago, the tools that a project manager has at his disposal have increased considerably. The New Project Management ToolsThere are many different versions and variations of what is available on the market, which has many cost ranges, including small business programs and even programs capable of keeping a business in business. However, running a business is not an easy task, and keeping track of everything is often the most difficult part of owning a business. These software solutions can make it easier for companies to communicate with employees, customers, share files, and track the status of projects and tasks.Management software can be a lifesaver for busy business owners looking for a better way to manage their business. But just having this type of software program will not help managers to be more effective. They still need to know how to communicate with the project manager and be able to clearly delegate responsibilities to project team members.Project management software has a simple goal: to help those involved in project management achieve their goals.

One thing that every homeowner should know a little bit about is roofing. Not only does it protect you and your family from the elements, it also helps protect the rest of your house as well. While it may seem a lot simpler and less expensive to do it yourself, you might actually end up spending more if you have to hire someone to fix a job that you have done incorrectly. When inspecting your roof for leaks, it is important that you inspect the whole roof, not just one section. If you find a troublesome area of your roof, you should still check all areas, as there could be more problems elsewhere.Ask the project manager or foreman for not only his contact information, but that of the company he works for. Many home builders are using various styles of metal roofing on their model homes.Consider the type of roofing materials used on other homes in your neighborhood.
