Apple has announced that it s creating its first app development accelerator in Asia, as the Cupertino company seeks to woo India s engineering community with a dedicated space in which to learn design best-practices for Apple s mobile operating system.Expected to open in Bengaluru in early 2017, the iOS App Design and Development Accelerator will support engineering talent and accelerate growth in India s iOS developer community, according to a press release.India has emerged as a key battleground for the big U.S. tech companies as both Google and Facebook look to tap the burgeoning online population — with varying degrees of success — even though much of the country s 1.3 billion inhabitants remain offline. And earlier this year, Apple confirmed plans to open a new development hub in Hyderabad, India that s expected to eventually house around 4,500 people.Apple s new app accelerator will essentially serve to help developers improve their design and development skills for iOS and will include one-on-one app reviews for developers, as well as support for Apple s programming language, Swift.India is home to one of the most vibrant and entrepreneurial iOS development communities in the world, said Apple CEO Tim Cook. With the opening of this new facility in Bengaluru, we re giving developers access to tools which will help them create innovative apps for customers around the world.Bengaluru is a major startup hub in India — an estimated one million people work in the city s technology industry, while more than 40 percent of university graduates in the area specialize in IT or engineering, according to Apple. This isn t the first such center Apple has unveiled — earlier this year, it announced its first iOS App Development Center in Europe, to be located at a partner institution in Naples, Italy. The company also has a similar hub in Brazil.
Business leaders who have opted to wait out a tech jobs hiring crunch to fill or add positions in their organization may want to consider getting off the sidelines. When a talent shortage article is published, it s likely that some people in the audience will roll their eyes and think that they each know a half-dozen talented IT professionals who are either under-employed or unemployed.Analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics by corporate advisory and strategy firm CEB shows that by 2020, the U.S. could have 1.4 million open computing jobs.Eóin O Toole, co-founder and managing partner of recruiter Arete Partners, notes that when employers turn up their noses at night school and online certificate programs, they exacerbate the problem. That may mean encouraging people with backgrounds not typical of those in science, technology, engineering and math.Programs aimed at adults are bringing people into STEM careers from seemingly unlikely backgrounds.

We ve got about 600 sales professionals and right now I couldn t accurately tell you who is doing what and where in this organization. The company also worked closely with Oracle and Deloitte to ensure payroll processes conformed to Canadian standards, managed differing payroll cycles, and complied with payroll regulations for both union and non-union employees. For example, we have 22 different vacation plans in our Canadian workforce and 12 different 401 k retirement plans in the US with limited difference between them—why?I see huge value in putting more decisions and activity into the hands of the employees and line leaders, he says. For example, if the company deadline for entering information on annual pay increases coincides with testing of the next bundle of code, Busch s team needs to build a timeline that accommodates both deadlines rather than just pushing off testing, as had been the practice with upgrades to on-premises software.Once all data is on the same platform, Busch eventually wants to present the consolidated data in a dashboard allowing executives to easily compare workforce and productivity data points across the company s operating sites.
It s based on existing technology, including Google Now.The assistant will power Google s upcoming Amazon Echo competitor, Google Home.Speaking at the beginning of the keynote at the Google I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California, Google chief executive Sundar Pichai described the technology as a conversational assistant that can carry on an ongoing two-way dialogue. We want to be there for our users asking them, How can I help?'Pichai said. The technology is voice-activated and available across devices, but the interface is packaged up inside of a chatbot — something like, say, Facebook Messenger s M. We are getting ready to launch something later this year, Pichai said. The Google Assistant is built into the Allo mobile messaging app, which is also being introduced today.Over the years Google has amassed a whole lot of AI talent and technology. And the systems are regularly improving — last year at I/O Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said Google s speech recognition technology was down to an 8 percent word error rate.Indeed, today Pichai said that 1 in every 5 Google search queries on Android in the U.S. is a voice query. But even though Google s AI technology represents value for the company internally, in the past year Google has shared some of that technology with the rest of the world as open source code. Now it s clear that Google is a few steps ahead of Apple.Earlier this week The Information reported that Google would give third-party developers access to speech recognition, some aspects of the Google Now personal digital assistant, and Android s Google Now On Tap feature for recognizing known entities mentioned in text onscreen and providing explanations and relevant links. While the world s biggest technology companies have been fixated on chatbots lately, the whole idea itself is not new.Voice-activated assistants like the Alexa-powered Amazon Echo speaker are another emerging medium, but currently bots seem more likely to be adopted by the masses.
Bhavin TurakhiaThe most successful companies are built on great people, and how well they are able to hold on to good talent.Startup cultures are defined by the leadership of a company and the people that work for organisations. Also Read: How to find the right business partner for your startupCompanies slowly adopt the collective conscience of their leadership, and so in a sense, they become an extension of the personalities of their founders.Competitive founders tend to birth startups that are progressive, and CEOs that tend to take time over-analysing data to come to decisions will probably create slower moving organisations.A startup s culture in the early days becomes its guidebook, and eventually grows to represent the identity by which it is perceived.A recent Forbes article that summarised the findings of an employee engagement study conducted by Tinypulse hypothesised that  employees who give their work culture low marks are nearly 15 per cent more likely to think about a new job than their counterparts. The knowledge that you are changing the world, or creating something that is potentially earth shattering is profound. Also Read: The trick to attracting Millennials to your startup brandFor good talent, it s the reason why they will wake up to come to work every morning.Another aspect to this is adopting a flat organisational structure — flat structures are more conducive to ideation, discussion, and rapid development and execution, which is exactly what startups need.Perks and the WorksThis comprises the likes of flexible work hours and vacation days, no dress code, free food, an ever buzzing workspace et al.
But The European Union has at least managed to harmonize many of the laws surrounding company operation, so that startups don t have to with all 28 jurisdictions at once.Earlier this year UK tech startup industry body Coadec released the results of a survey.Access to Europe means access to talented staff and access to a trading block of 500 million consumers, even before you begin engaging with the rest of the road. The effects of the EU vote will have an impact for years and years to come, and on the many new and young startups being created today.Given the nature of technology, with servers in the cloud humming away, tech staff ought to be able to take a half day, or even day off work without anything breaking. It s up to you how long: a half day, a whole day and a party!
There is a new trend emerging in the VC community, that s been a long time coming.Or in some cases, they re using a hybrid model that mixes a little of each concept. At 10x Management, we believe it s crucial that all segments of the private and public sectors adapt to take advantage of these market force changes in order to remain competitive. However, these platforms don t really help companies find the right talent, they just give them broad access to freelancers that they themselves must vet. This has forced the hands of many VCs to embrace option two. Many of these freelancers are trained and versed in building and documenting products for smooth hand-offs.

As the co-founder of a 142-proof software development agency in the Silicon Valley catering to pre- and post-money companies, I ve observed quite a bit of variance when it comes to the development process. In the first few chapters of The Lean Startup, Eric Ries explains how they honed their process such that any developer could commit code to production on their first day at work.It means the tech team has enough process in place, as well as checks-and-balances, that nobody can break things — not even a newbie. The challenge that many enterprises face is a lack of innovation and a slow response to change.I prefer positive reinforcement — after the sprint demo, a medium-sized trophy adorned with Mardi Gras beads is awarded to the geek with the best feature of the week, such as the geeks do at Lyft. When the company knows what it needs to build, but the roadmap seems so daunting and talent so limited, it seems only natural to skip functional tests for now.

Fitbit s not investing in Coin s current product offering, Coin 2.0, but instead bringing the company s near-field communication, mobile, and wireless talent on board for as-yet unspecified future projects. The Y Combinator-backed Coin made a lot of buzz back in November of 2013 when it unveiled the eponymous Coin card, a universal card replacement capable of storing and switching between the magnetic strip information of debit, credit, loyalty, and gift cards. After a meteoric start — it blew past its initial funding goal of $50,000 in less than 40 minutes — and several delayed shipments, its first production product, Coin 1.0, debuted in April of last year.Coin is halting production and sales of Coin 2.0 cards, it said in a blog post, and ceasing development on Coin 2.0 s firmware, the Coin mobile companion app, and its Coin Rewards and Coin Developer programs.Current Coin users can expect their cards to work for the duration of their built-in battery s lifetime, Coin said — an estimated two years.Increased competition is likely also at fault — thanks to aggressive pushes by Apple, Garmin, Xiaomi, and others, Fitbit s share of the wearables market dropped from 38 percent in 2014 to 27 percent last year.
Many tech companies in Silicon Valley like to blame the lack of diversity on what they call the pipeline.Of the people graduating from top engineering programs, 9 percent are black and Latino, but representation at tech firms typically falls around 5 percent, according to the EEOC s recent analysis of the 2014 EEO-1 data the agency collected.Orrick Partner Erin M. Connell at the EEOC teleconference in San Francisco. However, only five percent of the large tech firm employees are from one of these groups. This presents the unlikely scenarios that either major employers in the field are unable to attract four out of nine under-represented minority graduates from top schools or almost half of the minority graduates of top schools do not qualify for the positions for which they were educated.Among leading tech firms in Silicon Valley, 57 percent of executive employees were white, 36 percent were Asian American, 1.6 percent were Hispanic and less than 1 percent were black, according to the EEOC s 2014 data analysis.Although the meeting took place in Washington, D.C., I was able to sit in at the teleconference at the EEOC s San Francisco district office, where Connell participated via the livestream.
Apple earlier on Wednesday announced it would set up by early next year a facility in Bangalore to focus on helping developers on best practices and to improve the design, quality and performance of their apps on the iOS platform.Cook is on his first visit to India where the company saw a 56 percent year-on-year growth in iPhone sales in the first quarter even as its global iPhone sales and overall revenue dropped. The Cupertino, California, company did not disclose the size of its investment in the center though some reports have placed the figure at US$25 million. The talent here in the local area is incredible and we are looking forward to expanding our relationships and introducing more universities and partners to our platforms as we scale our operations, Cook said in a statement.India is the third largest smartphone market in the world, after China and the U.S., according to Gartner research director Anshul Gupta.Apple has also asked the government for a waiver on its rule that wholly-owned retail stores of foreign brands should sell products with 30 percent local content.
In the same week as Tim Cook went on the charm offensive in China and Apple opened a new app design accelerator in India, the Cupertino company has now officially unveiled the next step in its mission to capitalize on Asia: a new development hub in Hyderabad, India. The news isn t all that surprising, as reports circulated earlier this year that Apple was set to open a new base in the southern Indian state of Telangana, but Apple has now confirmed full details of the office, which will focus specifically on developing Apple Maps.Apple says the new office, which will be located at WaveRock campus on the outskirts of the city, will create up to 4,000 jobs and represents the company s first development hub outside the U.S.While Apple Maps has historically been regarded as inferior to alternatives such as Google Maps, the company s booming hardware business — bolstered substantially by iPhone — has meant that it has relied less on services. But with iPhone sales slowing, services will prove pivotal to Apple s future, which is why it recently invested $1 billion in Chinese ridesharing company Didi Chuxing.Apple is focused on making the best products and services in the world and we are thrilled to open this new office in Hyderabad which will focus on Maps development, said Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a press release. The talent here in the local area is incredible and we are looking forward to expanding our relationships and introducing more universities and partners to our platforms as we scale our operations.Apple Maps has improved considerably in recent years, and reports suggest that it s now used three times more often on iOS than Google Maps, but many still consider it inferior. And given that maps are such a key service on mobile, Apple s move to open a major hub dedicated to just that is notable.
Telangana chief minister Chandrashekar Rao meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook in IndiaApple will set up an office in southern India to develop the Maps feature for its products, the company said on Thursday in its second such announcement since CEO Tim Cook arrived in the country."Apple is focused on making the best products and services in the world and we are thrilled to open this new office in Hyderabad which will focus on Maps development," Cook said in the statement."The talent here in the local area is incredible and we are looking forward to expanding our relationships and introducing more universities and partners to our platforms as we scale our operations."The country is an incredibly price-conscious market where smartphones are available for as little as $100, and Apple must bring in cheaper version of the iPhone to make successful inroads. The tech company is trying to get Indian government approval to sell refurbished iPhones, a proposal likely to face stiff opposition from local manufacturers. With a massive 1.25 billion population, including 6 million new Internet users every month, India has become a key focus of Silicon Valley tech giants over the last few years.

It looks like 2016 is the year that Apple learns to show India some love.It s already working on plans to open its first official retail stores in the country and announced yesterday that it would set up a support facility for iOS developers in Bangalore early next year.Today, the company revealed that it s opened a new office in Hyderabad, another major IT hub in the country.CEO Tim Cook, who is currently touring India after a stop in China where he invested $1 billion in ride-sharing company Didi Chuxing, said:Apple is focused on making the best products and services in the world and we are thrilled to open this new office in Hyderabad which will focus on Maps development. The talent here in the local area is incredible and we are looking forward to expanding our relationships and introducing more universities and partners to our platforms as we scale our operations. However, it remains to be seen if Apple will make use of that setup, as government authorities are still mulling over plans to regulate how companies and services represent mapping data in the country.
