The Orbic Journey V is Verizon’s newest “basic, simple phone” with no smartphone, Android, or iPhone features of which to speak. This is the phone which the average young person, or more likely their dad, will buy in defiance of smartphone trends, and will use for many years to come.Assuming this phone lasts longer than its 2-year monthly payment period, there’s a good chance owners will continue making use of this hardware until it’s completely worn out.The Orbic Journey V has features like “well-spaced keys” and “2 large screens.” This device is a flip phone, which means it can be kept folded up in its users’ pocket to keep its internal screen safe from damage. The external screen “makes it easy to view notifications” without having to flip the phone fully open.Inside this relatively compact flip phone is a 1400 mAh battery.

Back at Gamescom 2018, when Nvidia came on stage and unveiled its Turing graphics cards, I admittedly got sucked into the marketing. When Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang started demoing the real-time ray tracing that these cards could pull off, my mind automatically started jumping to the possibilities.Just imagine a horror game in the vein of Amnesia: The Dark Descent but with ray traced shadows. However, once the graphics card made its way to my doorstep, I had to wait a while to see what ray tracing looked like. This is, of course, while enjoying the amazing 4K gaming performance, so it wasn't all a loss. However, at Gamescom 2019, I got a chance to see what the future of ray tracing will look like, if only just a glimpse.

The Trump administration has extended a limited reprieve on US technology sales to Huawei, even as questions continue over how broader sanctions effect the Chinese technology giant, CBC News reported. In May, the US government blacklisted the sale of Huawei technology in the country, except for a narrow list of products and services. That exemption has since expired, but the US Commerce Department extended it for another 90 days, as expected. The aim of the extension was to give smaller US internet and wireless firms that rely on the Chinese company time to transition away from their reliance on its products, said US commerce secretary Wilbur Ross.Other exports to Huawei officially remain restricted, though it’s unclear how much is in practice.

Alex Aliume is about to show me his latest painting, made with a new technique.I’m on my knees on the floor of his 8- by 12-foot basement studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and 3D neon fluorescent artwork covers almost every square inch of wall, floor, and ceiling. The new painting is called Cosmic Consciousness. When I say painting, though, I actually mean four paintings: I see one thing under normal light, another with 3D glasses, another under black light, and something else in total darkness.Aliume, who is 25, has only been painting full-time for two years. He’s got 82,000 followers on Instagram, and he has sold work to buyers from the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Holland, India, Thailand and the Philippines.

Russia, ruled by Vladimir Putin‘s arguably authoritarian regime, wants to leverage blockchain technology to host Moscow‘s administrative services and boost transparency.Essentially, the government is looking for a contractor to build an Ethereum-based system to host the issuance of property ownership documents, the allocation of slots at farmer markets, and wait for it: a voting platform which enables Moscow residents to have their say on matters such as locations for new bike paths, street decoration, and city events, CoinDesk reports. The estimated cost of development of such a system will approximately be $860,000 and will take around 60 days to build once a contractor has been chosen.Apparently, the aim is to leverage blockchain technology to boost public confidence in Moscow‘s electronic capabilities by increasing transparency – something for which Russia is not known for inside or outside of its borders. It goes without saying that most news coming out of Russia should be met with a certain level of skepticism given Putin‘s regime is hardly known for playing by the rules. When it comes to blockchain and cryptocurrency, Russia has had a tumultuous – some would say confusing – history with both.

Mobile networks just can't seem to play nice when it comes to 5G, complaining over perceived unfairness, while gleefully wallowing in their own pools of privilege. This week's spat is between O2 and Three, with the former complaining to Ofcom about Three's dibs on the 3.6GHz band block of the 5G spectrum. The 3.4-3.8GHz wedge “is currently the most important range of frequencies for the launch and development of 5G mobile services," according to O2 - something that Three has pretty much acknowledged. Its website boasts that it has "more 5G spectrum than anyone else. And not all spectrum is created equal."Back in 2017, Three got into it with EE over a 5G spectrum auction, saying the BT-owned company had an unfair advantage because of all the money it has at its disposal to blow at the auctions.

Apple’s AirPlay technology has long enabled Apple TV users to wirelessly mirror the screen of one iOS or macOS device at a time, but non-Apple devices and multi-screen mirroring were another story.Third-party developer Squirrel today announced a new version of its Ditto Receiver app that adds both capabilities to the Apple TV, including support for six different operating systems, though the features come at a fairly steep price that will only appeal to certain business and educational customers.Ditto includes support for Android, Chrome OS, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and Windows, and can simultaneously display four screens at once, such that an Apple TV could mirror four Chromebooks or a combination of Android, iPhone, iPad, and Windows screens at the same time.Squirrel’s user experience is intentionally simple by design: No wires are required, and each device relies solely on a Ditto Connect app, which needs nothing more than a specific room code to begin mirroring to the display. On macOS and Windows machines, Ditto is able to share either the entire screen or a specific application; on the other platforms, full-screen sharing is allowed.Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models running tvOS 11 or later are fully supported for multi-platform and four-screen simultaneous streaming, while older devices — including the second- and third-generation Apple TVs running software version 4.4 or later — can stream your choice of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and Windows at once, but not simultaneously, and without Android or Chrome support.

While an iFixit teardown of Huawei’s Mate 20X suggested that the company’s first 5G smartphone was using fairly large, hot-running components to compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips, the engineering differences between the 5G rivals are now becoming clearer thanks to teardowns performed by IHS Markit. In a report released today, the research firm says it made some interesting discoveries after disassembling six early 5G smartphones: Based on chip size, system design, and memory, Huawei rushed an comparatively inefficient solution to market, resulting in a device that’s larger, more expensive, and less energy efficient than it could have been.Huawei made a fairly big deal about its use of self-made processors in its 5G phones, noting that it was including both a Kirin 980 system-on-chip and a Balong 5000 5G modem, the latter billed as the first commercial multimode 5G/4G/3G/2G chip.In theory, that modem should have given the Mate 20X an advantage over devices with early Snapdragon chips, but as IHS notes, the Kirin 980 has its own 4G/3G/2G modem inside, which wound up “unused and unnecessary” inside the phone, increasing its cost, battery usage, and PCB footprint. The space savings from a smaller SoC wouldn’t have been trivial, and was compounded by related component inefficiencies: a Huawei modem die size 50% larger than Qualcomm’s first-generation X50 modem, a “surprisingly large” 3GB of supporting memory just for the modem, and a lack of support for millimeter wave 5G networks.By comparison, IHS principal analyst Wayne Lam told VentureBeat, Samsung’s Exynos 5100 modem die size is “almost exactly the same as the X50.” The report describes Huawei’s design choices as “far from ideal,” noting that they’re “highlighting the challenges of early 5G technology.”

Google Images has received a total overhaul, and it puts shopping front and center. The redesigned site doesn't look too different at first, but clicking a picture of a product now presents you with information about it, a price, and a link where you can buy it.Google began testing a similar feature in March, which it called 'shoppable ads'.In the initial tests, only broad search terms like 'home office ideas' or 'abstract art' would deliver prices and product links, but now virtually any search will return shopping results. If you click a picture that isn't a product (a person or a location, for example), Google Images will produce the same information as before the redesign, but in a sidebar on the right that doesn't obscure the list of thumbnails. The focus on shopping isn't the only change for Google Images; scroll down a little and you'll notice that Google has borrowed an idea from Bing's visual search by adding links to 'related searches'.

Senator Wyden fears tech may be insecure by design, urges billionaire to answer a few QsAfter last week's revelations that a hacker stole the personal details of 106 million Capital One credit card applicants from its Amazon-hosted cloud storage, a US Senator has demanded Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos explain what exactly what went wrong. The sensitive information was siphoned from Capital One's Amazon Web Services S3 buckets by a former AWS engineer, who was arrested and charged at the end of July.On Monday this week, Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) asked Bezos how exactly the data was stolen beyond the scant details released by the bank that it was all due to a "firewall misconfiguration."Wyden is particularly concerned that other companies that store their data in the AWS cloud may have been hit in the same way by the suspected Capital One thief, Seattle-based software engineer Paige Thompson. He cited reports that Ford, the University of Michigan, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and others may have suffered similar losses of information at the hands of Thompson, and that this may point to a systemic weakness in Amazon's security.

Tinder’s former marketing chief is suing the app’s parent companies and former CEO over claims that the company wrongfully terminated her employment after she went public with sexual assault allegations.Rosette Pambakian claims in her lawsuit that former Tinder CEO Greg Blatt sexually assaulted her after a Tinder holiday party in 2016 in an employee’s hotel room, the cost of which the company covered. She went public with the allegations at the same time a separate lawsuit was filed claiming that Tinder and its parent company, Match Group, purposely undervalued Tinder in an effort to avoid paying billions of dollars in equity to the startup team, including Pambakian.Tinder later fired Pambakian, along with other employees involved in the lawsuit, claiming they were “unable to fulfill their job responsibilities.” Match spokesperson Justine Sacco referred The Verge to previous comments on Pambakian’s allegations, saying the company conducted a “thorough investigation.”The new lawsuit claims Blatt told Pambakian that he got “hard every time I look at you” and wanted to leave the holiday party with her.Blatt is then alleged to have texted his assistant asking where they all were and showed up at the room, where he assaulted Pambakian.

Not only are they setting trends globally, they are also winning big when it comes to revenue.Case in point: Chinese video game giant Tencent, the world’s largest game publisher, is investing heavily in the Western market.According to Niko Partners, China’s mobile games revenue will surpass $25 billion by 2023, having grown 28.9% year-on-year, despite a nine-month licensing freeze from the government in 2018.The tough crackdown regulations limited the release and monetization of new games for nine months and caused revues to slip in Q3 for a number of players, including Tencent, and which prompted them to shift their focus more on enterprise services than consumer-facing games.Additionally, the Chinese government is blaming gaming for bad eyesight in children.Studios are complying where they can, by limiting screen time for minors, for example; however, iResearch expects that they would look to publish their games in a less controlled environment, way out West.

A new Windows laptop may be in the works at Samsung, and now there are a few photos to show us what it could look like.According to The Verge, well-known leaker Evan Blass released a few photos of what is expected to be a new laptop from Samsung called the Galaxy Book S. Blass leaked the photos via his Twitter account, @evleaks.The photos themselves don’t offer much in the way of what kinds of features to expect from the Galaxy Book S, but there are a few aspects we noticed: The display features fairly thin bezels on the sides of it and the side view of the laptop featured in one of the photos (see below) shows off what appears to be a headphone jack and a USB-C port.In addition, as The Verge notes, the keyboard of the Galaxy Book S also bears a strong resemblance to Microsoft’s Surface laptop design (see above). In addition, the Galaxy Book S looks to be a fairly lightweight and thin laptop. It features a clamshell design that would be, as The Verge notes, a deviation from its predecessor, the Galaxy Book 2.

Infrared imagery from NASA's Aqua satellite revealed Tropical Storm Erick is being battered by wind shear, and that its strongest storms were south of the Big Island of Hawaii.Forecasters used other NASA satellites to find Erick's center. In the National Hurricane Center (NHC) Discussion of Erick on August 2 at 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC), Forecaster Jelsema noted that the NHC utilized data from two NASA satellites to find Erick's center. The Discussion noted "Although the center was difficult to locate overnight due to high level cloud cover moving over the low-level center of circulation, a timely GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement mission) pass at 7:36 a.m. EDT (1136Z) and a Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) pass at 7:40 a.m. EDT (1140Z) assisted in locating the center."In addition, NASA's Aqua satellite used infrared light to analyze the strength of storms and found the bulk of them in the southwestern quadrant of Erick, and south of the Big Island of Hawaii.Infrared data provides temperature information, and the strongest thunderstorms that reach high into the atmosphere have the coldest cloud top temperatures.
