It can either be the magic carpet ride, or the immensely powerful engines for both motorcars and the aviation industry. We first caught a glimpse of the Rolls-Royce Wraith Eagle VIII at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Lake Como. The Wraith Eagle VIII is a fitting tribute to Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Brown: the first gentlemen to cross the Atlantic non-stop in June 1919.The Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engines were so powerful, they allowed the aircraft to achieve speeds of up to 115 mph, itself a record at that time. Both men completed the 1,880 mile journey in around 16 hours. Now that I think about the ordeal, it’s hard to imagine what’s going inside the minds of Captain Alcock and Lieutenant Brown when all flight instrumentation instantaneously froze as they gained altitude after taking off.

We're going to Titan, and we're going in style.NASA announced on Thursday its next great solar system exploration mission."Dragonfly" involves an ambitious plan to send a rotorcraft -- essentially a large drone -- to Saturn's moon, Titan. The flying vehicle will be designed to touch down in multiple locations, from dunes to the floor of an impact crater carrying out science missions to look for the building blocks of life.NASA calls it an analogue to the very early Earth and at least one NASA engineer has suggested we look to Titan for a future human colony."Dragonfly will visit a world filled with a wide variety of organic compounds, which are the building blocks of life and could teach us about the origin of life itself," said NASA's Thomas Zurbuchen.

Electronic Arts, when called upon to defend its practice of including loot boxes in its games, chose to defend its money-maker in the most cringeworthy way possible, by comparing them to Kinder eggs. The UK Parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport Committee yesterday heard evidence from EA and Epic Games representatives about various game-related issues, the legality and propriety of loot boxes and other microtransactions in games chief among them. For the most part, the gaming reps danced around the issue as tactfully as possible, but when the EA camp was asked about loot boxes, they responded by saying they refer to loot boxes as “surprise mechanics” and comparing opening one to cracking a Kinder egg or a Hatchimal.Wow, that’s… more than a little tortured. You paid $5 and got several pieces of useless loot you’re never going to use — surprise!Kerry Hopkins, EA’s VP of legal affairs, told the committee: “We do think the way that we have implemented these kinds of mechanics … is actually quite ethical and quite fun, quite enjoyable to people.”
Samsung Electronics could be soon to announce the launch of its innovative folding smartphone-tablet device, the Galaxy Fold.A Samsung executive confirmed this week that “most” of the problems with the device are fixed and that it is almost ready to launch. It comes after Samsung confirmed last month that it had a plan to fix its Galaxy Fold, after problems emerged with its cutting edge display.Samsung had first revealed the Galaxy Fold to the world earlier this year and was under pressure to bring it to market ahead of rivals Huawei and Xiaomi.Samsung had planned to put its $2,000 (£1,800) device on sale in the US on 26 April and in the UK on 3 May.But it was forced to postpone the launch after early reviewers reported faults with the folding display, which halted media events for the device in the Far East,
AT, Verizon, and Sprint have all launched early 5G networks and devices in the United States, leaving T-Mobile as the only major U.S. carrier without a presence in the growing market — but T-Mobile CEO John Legere doesn’t see it that way.His two bigger rivals have launched millimeter wave 5G networks that are limited in scale and still unmapped, he said today in a new blog post, and only Sprint’s just-launched 2.5GHz 5G network can deliver “a seamless and meaningful 5G experience.”Legere clearly isn’t unbiased or impartial in the situation, as T-Mobile is still awaiting regulatory approval for its merger with Sprint, and the blog post is designed to dispel misinformation regarding the deal. It’s “important for me to make sure people really understand that the New T-Mobile will absolutely be GOOD for innovation and good for consumers,” Legere explains, addressing concerns that have been raised by federal and state regulators during the merger review process. On the consumer side, Legere says that T-Mobile is building “5G for all” — service that will truly reach across the United States, thanks to the high-, mid-, and low-band spectrum strategy it enunciated well before rivals. The company is sticking to its previously announced plan to start with a blanket of low-band 600MHz 5G coverage in 2019, then leverage Sprint’s mid-band for faster, seamless coverage after the merger, and add its own high-frequency assets in certain areas to boost speeds thereafter.
Poorly secured databases are a top privacy and security concern — and Google now wants to plug that leak. The internet giant has said it’s open sourcing Private Join and Compute, a new secure multi-party computation (MPC) tool designed to help organizations work together with confidential data sets. The tool is conceived with privacy in mind, and thus allows organizations to trade data sets and glean aggregate insights about other parties’ confidential data without actually disclosing anything about individuals represented in the data set.The data stays encrypted, and only the results of calculations based on the data will be revealed. It works by using a cryptographic protocol called Private Set-Intersection (PSI).Google already employs this approach on its Password Checkup Chrome extension which lets users match their login credentials against an encrypted dataset of 4 billion compromised credentials without revealing the details to anyone, including Google.
Plus: MongoDB crams end-to-end crypto into database techGoogle on Wednesday released source code for a project called Private Join and Compute that allows two parties to analyze and compare shared sets of data without revealing the contents of each set to the other party. This particular technique is a type of secure multiparty computation that builds upon a cryptographic protocol called Private Set-Intersection (PSI).Google employs this approach in a Chrome extension called Password Checkup that lets users test logins and passwords against a dataset of compromised credentials without revealing the query to the internet goliath.Private Join and Compute, also known as Private Intersection-Sum (PIS), takes PSI further by hiding the data that represents the intersection of the two data sets and revealing only the results of calculations based on the data. The technique is described in a research paper, "On Deploying Secure Computing Commercially: Private Intersection-Sum Protocols and their Business Applications," penned by nine Google researchers: Mihaela Ion, Ben Kreuter, Ahmet Erhan Nergiz, Sarvar Patel, Mariana Raykova, Shobhit Saxena, Karn Seth, David Shanahan, and Moti Yung.
The $530 million hack that blighted Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck in January 2018 may have been carried out by Russian hackers.A virus thought to be used in the hack has been found on employee computers and is linked to Russian hacker groups, the Asahi Shimbun reports. The hackers allegedly emailed employees with malicious files, including the known Mokes and Netwire malware, which grant attackers remote access to infected systems. It’s believed that employees inadvertently, or unknowingly, installed the viruses onto their machines. As a result, attackers were able to gain access to and manipulate the company’s security keys to steal the cryptocurrency. The attack was previously thought to be the work of the North Korean hacking group Lazarus.

So far, Microsoft, Bethesda, Electronic Arts, and Devolver Digital have already made their announcements.Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order unsurprisingly stole the show for EA.Given the beating it has taken this generation, that certainly helped the Xbox brand.Along with revealing new details about the next Xbox, code-named Project Scarlett, we learned the new console will coincide with Halo Infinite‘s launch during the 2020 holiday season. There were several highlights, including the reveal Tango Gameworks’ new action title Ghostwire Tokyo and Arkane Studios’ Deathloop. But a sizable chunk of the presentation focused on existing games, like The Elder Scrolls: Blades and Fallout 76.

AUSTIN, Texas—Two types of Tremors fans exist in the world: those who've seen Tremors: Bloodlines and those who only acknowledge the franchise's original film starring Kevin Bacon. In that 1990 horror-comedy, a small Southwestern town called Perfection suffers from an infestation of people-eating sandworms (called Graboids) that local not-so-brainy beefcake Val McKee (Bacon) eventually beats back.So I took the idea to Jason Blum, and we explored a film version. It became clear it wouldn't be done as a film, but Jason asked what I thought about a TV series... On the first few takes [at plotting out a script], I thought this was a terrible idea to do as a series.Cobra Kai is a funny and engaging return to The Karate Kid universe"[Early on] we were looking at nostalgia as a good thing," said Jessica Rhoades, the show's executive producer (then with Blumhouse TV).
YouTube initially responded by saying that, while it didn’t endorse Crowder’s actions, they didn’t violate any of its policies and so he wouldn’t be punished. The decision quickly turned into a PR nightmare for YouTube, with most mainstream media reporting the decision as YouTube ‘tolerating’ homophobic content. This precipitated a major rethink by YouTube, which published a couple of blog posts apparently designed to appease the many critics of its initial decision. The first was headlined ‘Our ongoing work to tackle hate’, which addressed the difficulties of policing so-called ‘hate speech’ on the platform.“Today, we’re taking another step in our hate speech policy by specifically prohibiting videos alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion based on qualities like age, gender, race, caste, religion, sexual orientation or veteran status,” announced the post.“If we were to take all potentially offensive content down, we’d be losing valuable speech — speech that allows people everywhere to raise their voices, tell their stories, question those in power, and participate in the critical cultural and political conversations of our day,” said the post.
Speaking at the re:MARS Conference in Las Vegas, Amazon’s show looking at machine learning, automation, robotics and space, the eCommerce giant has suggested it is close to introducing autonomous drones to its delivery force.“We think the answer is yes, and one of the ways we’re pursuing that goal is by pioneering autonomous drone technology.“We’ve been hard at work building fully electric drones that can fly up to 15 miles and deliver packages under five pounds to customers in less than 30 minutes. And, with the help of our world-class fulfilment and delivery network, we expect to scale Prime Air both quickly and efficiently, delivering packages to customers within months.”Looking at the wider business model, not only does this enable Amazon to further streamline delivery operations, one of the largest overheads at the business, but it potentially takes it towards new revenues. With the promise of delivery within 30 minutes, there is potential for Amazon not only to move into the same day delivery world, but also offer services for takeaways, coffee shops and supermarkets.
BT is pressing ahead with plans to shut down as many as 270 offices in a major restructure that will see 13,000 jobs cut.The programme was announced by former CEO Gavin Patterson in May and will see 13,000 jobs cut, mainly in back office and middle management roles, and a move to base its operations at 30 sites around the UK.It is hoped the changes will save £1.3 billion, allow the more streamlined company to react more rapidly to market trends, and means it can get closer to customers. It will also hire as many as 6,000 engineers and customer service agents as it invests in fibre and 5G infrastructure.BT is pitching the changes as the UK’s “largest workplace consolidation and improvement” project, claiming the move will result in modern, future-proof offices with 5G connectivity. However euphemistic monikers such as the “better workforce programme” are unlikely to endear it to unions who overwhelmingly reject the changes.
WorkRamp, a San Francisco-based startup developing a full-stack cloud employee onboarding and management platform, today announced that it’s raised $8 million in series A financing led by Bow Capital, with participation from existing investors Initialized Capital, Susa Ventures, and the Slack Fund. The influx of cash brings the company’s total raised to nearly $10 million, and CEO Ted Blosser said it’ll fuel the expansion of WorkRamp’s engineering team and the buildout of its product offerings.“We are seeing the pace of innovation across companies increase and accelerate the demand for tools that allow your people development to keep up with your product development,” said Blosser.“We have seen how companies struggle without enough information on the skills and performance of their people. We built WorkRamp to provide leaders with the analytics they need to make more informed decisions about training and developing their teams.”WorkRamp, which Blosser — previously a product manager at Box — founded with fellow Box veteran and head of engineering Arsh Mand in 2016, pivoted to the employee training segment after it acquired Prelude, a stealth Y Combinator-backed company working on an enterprise commerce marketplace.
