Pedro Almodóvar – who has spent his decades-long career giving us sexy, melodramatic romance tales like Tie Me Up!But weirdly enough, his comments about superhero films are not among the current wave of seemingly endless remarks from the likes of Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and others as to whether the Marvel movies hold higher value beyond being smash-hit blockbusters. There is an unidentified gender, the adventure is what’s important. For Almodóvar to say that superhero movies are sexless isn’t exactly true – these are films filled with romance, if, disappointingly, there are currently more romantic tales about men named Steve in these movies than there are LGBTQ+ ones. There are relationships, innuendos, tragic sacrifices made out of love, great victories earned in its name. There are, for the more juvenile among us, questions about the female orgasm (thanks, Wonder Woman), masturbatory jokes (thanks, Guardians of the Galaxy), even commentary on dick sizes (thanks, again, to Wonder Woman).

Spotify today announced that it’s rolling out a new app aimed specifically at kids.Dubbed simply Spotify Kids, the app will be available to subscribers who are on Spotify’s family plan.At the moment, availability is pretty limited, as Spotify has only launched the app in beta for the time being. In fact, the only place where you can actually download Spotify Kids is in Ireland, but the company plans to launch the app in regions where its family plan is available in the coming months. We don’t have a more precise release timeline than that at the moment, but assuming the beta goes smoothly, it shouldn’t be too long before Spotify Kids is available on a wider scale. In any case, Spotify chief premium business officer Alex Norström describes Spotify Kids as a “composite of playlists,” in a blog post today.
The Redmond doctor came into the room, huffed a chair into place, but wouldn't meet Windows 7's eyes, just stared at the desk. That scare in the fall of 2012 had been irksome, nothing more.In this FAQ about the end of support, Microsoft waited until the fifth item before making note of the operating system's resilience."If you continue to use Windows 7 after support has ended, your PC will still work," Microsoft pledged, also noting, "Your PC will continue to start and run."But customer support comes to a halt — theoretically, Microsoft's phone- and chat-based support won't answer questions — as do security updates.Yet unless Microsoft issues an emergency update in the four weeks after Jan. 14, the first fixes Windows 7 users will miss arrive Feb. 11.
ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell and Northwestern University engineers, along with a federal economist, have created an energy model that helps to remove carbon-generated power from the U.S. electric grid - replacing it with a greener, financially feasible wind, solar and hydro energy system.Their new model is explained in a paper published Oct. 28 in Nature Energy."We're trying to balance the priorities of maintaining a reliable, low-cost, efficient electricity system in the U.S., while shifting to a cleaner, greener system," said co-author Jacob Mays, a Cornell University postdoctoral associate in civil and environmental engineering.Mays will join Cornell's engineering faculty after next semester as an assistant professor, where he will study the optimization of transportation and energy systems."The model in this paper," he said, "is helping to structure tradeoffs between goals, such as low prices, greener energy and reliable electricity."The paper, "Asymmetric Risk and Fuel Neutrality in Electricity Capacity Markets," is co-authored by David Morton, Northwestern University professor of industrial engineering and management sciences; and Richard P. O'Neill, chief economic adviser at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
HTC has just announced a new, more affordable version of its Exodus 1 smartphone — a device that comes with a built-in hardware wallet for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The new HTC Exodus 1s costs 219 euros (around $244) and allows owners to buy, sell, send, receive, lend, and borrow cryptocurrency directly from the device.“We are providing the tools for access to universal basic finance; the tools to have a metaphorical Swiss bank in your pocket,” Phil Chen, decentralized chief officer at HTC said in a press release.“Full nodes are the most important ingredient in the resilience of the Bitcoin network and we have lowered the barrier to entry for any person to run a node, which is simply a computer, mobile in our case, participating in the global Bitcoin network that propagates transactions and blocks everywhere, which is the foundation and fundamental definition of a peer-to-peer cash system.”If you’re wondering what all this means, we interviewed Chen last year and he explained what a blockchain phone is and why you might want one.Right now, this is only likely to pique the interest of people trading in cryptocurrency or gaming collectibles, but by offering a much more affordable device, HTC is hoping to tempt more people who are curious to dip a toe in the water.

After Xiaomi’s two-notch patent, it seems Samsung too has similar ideas as the company has filed for a dual-notch design at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.Well, the patent was filed a couple of years back, but the registration was completed just a few day ago, as reported by Pricebaba. This is in addition to a reverse notch design from the Korean giant that was also recently spotted on patent websites.Coming to the dual notch patent, details are pretty scarce, but the image shows a triangular cutout on the upper two corners of the front display. In comparison, Xiaomi’s patent had somewhat rounded notch corners but that seems to be the only difference. Also, the two notches look huge compared to Xiaomi’s solution and very obtrusive.
Plus, it’s ready for ATSC 3.0, the next standard in OTA broadcasts that supports 4K HDR and higher framerates. We’ve listed five alternatives — including outdoor and amplified antennas — that will all help you get crystal-clear HD programming, and each has its own unique strength.Your next stop — if you’re not going to connect your antenna directly to your TV — is our best OTA receivers roundup.Editor’s note: Not everyone lives in a neighborhood ripe for antenna viewing, so we recommend taking a look at TV Fool’s TV Signal Analysis tool or a similar site to find out which channels are available in your area before you buy.Just to go the extra mile, all of these components are crafted using renewable energy. This is true of all four available Eclipse models, which come in estimated signal ranges, from 35 miles up to 70.
First, there’s the ongoing debate about whether Facebook should permit politicians to lie in their ads.Third, Twitter sought to clarify its never-enforced rules around what to do if a “world leader” ever incites violence against a private individual, promotes terrorism, or violates a handful of other big rules.Fifth, TikTok — owned by the Chinese company ByteDance — announced it had hired and outside law firm and formed a committee to refine its content moderation guidelines and disclose them more fully.Fair-housing advocates are accusing Airbnb and other short-term rental platforms of abusing the legal provision that grants tech companies broad immunity for content people post on its platforms. And because borderline content tends to touch on sensitive or controversial subjects, the backdrop of those discussions is often a public-relations crisis.Could there be a partial solution for disinformation that won’t abridge our free speech rights by banning micro targeting?
Before Google moves to bring its human-sounding robot calling service Duplex to help users automate their interactions with businesses to international markets, an Indian giant is deploying its own solution to get a jumpstart on the local market.Reliance Jio today unveiled AI-powered Video Call Assistant service that will allow businesses to automate their customer support and other communications. The service, built in collaboration with Radisys, a U.S.-based subsidiary of Reliance Industries, can be accessed via a 4G phone call and does not require installation of any additional app, Jio said.Executives of Reliance Jio demonstrated the technology on Monday at the third installment of Indian Mobile Congress, similar to but not affiliated with the trade show Mobile World Congress. They said they have already courted a number of customers for this service, including HDFC Bank.Once tapped, the user is greeted by a pre-recorded video message from a human.
With NASA’s new line of spacesuits, its next crew of lunar bound astronauts likely won’t look much different from Neil Armstrong et al.while hopping around on the Moon. That’s because their suits will be custom-fitted via 3D, full-body scans, just one of a bevy of improvements and features incorporated into the iconic Apollo 11 design as part of NASA’s “next generation spacesuit” for its Artemis missions.Still currently in development, the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or xEMU for short, has already undergone a few tests underwater, with orbital testing likely to start in 2023.Basically, each suit acts as a “personalized spaceship that mimics all of the protections from the harsh environment of space and the basic resources that Earth and its atmosphere provide,” as NASA wrote in a blog post this week. While taking a stroll on Earth remains significantly easier, the xEMU suits’ improved joint bearings and placement allow for a greater range of motion so astronauts shouldn’t be limited to “[b]unny-hopping” around on the Moon’s surface like the Apollo crew.

Joe Biden’s campaign team sent a letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, COO Sheryl Sandberg and global elections policy chief Katie Harbath that essentially called on the company to take down a Trump campaign ad that made debunked claims regarding the Biden family’s relationship with Ukraine.Facebook responded to that letter today with their own letter to Biden saying that the company’s policies prevented it from making judgment calls on the veracity of speech in political advertisements.Political campaigns are messy, so America’s largest content company — with more content moderators than any publication in the country — is leaving it to the free press to debunk what it’s getting paid to broadcast. Here’s the rest of the letter:Here's the letter Facebook sent the @JoeBiden campaign explaining why it allowed Trump to run Facebook ads with false allegations about the VP and Ukraine — @sarahmucha reports.— Donie O'Sullivan (@donie) October 9, 2019

MSI announced a new gaming laptop with the Alpha 15.While that's not too surprising from a company that turns out new products all the time, this new laptop has doubled down on AMD hardware and introduced the first generation of AMD Navi graphics in laptops. The MSI Alpha 15 is kitted with proper gaming laptop hardware. It can run up to an AMD Ryzen 7 3750H processor (CPU) for high performance, and it will use the new AMD Radeon RX 5500M graphics processor (GPU) with 4GB of GDDR6 VRAM.It comes with either 8GB or 16GB of memory (RAM).It has drive space for a 2.5-inch hard drive as well as either a PCIe- or SATA-based M.2 solid-state drive (SSD).
And while our capacity for speech is unique, my colleague Robert Shumaker and I have used the novelty instrument to show that great apes aren’t far behind.Yet, how our species – and our species alone – developed such a powerful method of communication remains unclear. That is, the uniquely advanced ability to engage our vocal folds to produce sounds at will, as opposed to the reflexive screams and cries that other animals produce as automatic responses to changes in their environment and physiology.Scientists long thought that the capacity of great apes to control their voice was just as limited as that of their fellow mammals. To find out more about these abilities, we gave captive orangutans at the US’s Indianapolis Zoo the opportunity play a membranophone — a class of musical instrument that includes the kazoo. This is because it is the bursts of air produced by our vocal folds opening and closing when we vocalize that make the membrane of the instrument vibrate, and the instrument play.
Today the folks at Anovos announced that they’ve begun production on a officially licensed life-sized replica helmet from “Star Wars The Mandalorian”.This is the same helmet that the main character wears in the first live-action Star Wars show, the show that’ll debut on the first Disney streaming service, Disney+ (Disney Plus, if you like). Before the show is even shown, the folks at Anovos are making a $650 helmet for the super fans. This helmet is made using an original, official, screen-used helmet as a guide.Per Anovos: “To perfect our finishing process we painted our prototypes side-by-side with an original screen-used helmet which allowed us to instantly compare our paintwork directly to the original piece and make adjustments as needed.”This helmet is similar to previously released helmet from Anovos – but here they had a new opportunity.
In recent years, the move to consuming less alcohol or lower alcohol products has taken shape.Generational changes are partly at play as millennials eschew the booze-infused cultures of their parents and grandparents. With that in mind, a burgeoning “sober curious” movement has begun. For years, low-alcohol brews such as O’Doul’s and Buckler have been tucked into small corners of the beer aisle.Yet high-profile entries like Heineken, with their 0.0 beer, have shown that the nascent category is primed for substantial growth.Jeff Stevens, founder of WellBeing, had a history in the beer and spirits marketing business (though he stopped drinking at age 24) and pondered why there wasn’t a product like this on the market.

A critical vulnerability in Apache Hadoop, the widely used framework for distributed processing of large data sets, requires urgent patching.Uber software engineer Ekanth Sethuramalingam he has identified a critical vulnerability in Apache Hadoop – the widely used framework for distributed processing of large data sets. The Hadoop vulnerability, CVE-2018-11768, affects Hadoop versions 3.1.0 to 3.1.1; 3.0.0-alpha1 to 3.0.3; 2.9.0 to 2.9.1; 2.0.0-alpha to 2.8.Describing it as involving a “a mismatch in the size of the fields used to store user/group information between memory and disk representation”, the Apache Software Foundation said the vulnerability “causes theuser/group information to be corrupted across storing in fsimage andFSimage is a file stored on the OS filesystem that contains the complete directory structure (namespace) of the Hadoop Distributed File System with details about the location of the data.
Let's not forget that football season stretches well into the winter months, and that can mean a ton of snow (I know my fellow Packers fans out there can relate). If you're a huge fan, I totally get that you still want to tailgate and cheer on your favorite team well into the season -- and that's more than fine! But with hypothermia being a real risk of spending extended periods of time in the cold (and at the very least, it can be unpleasant), you should follow these tailgating tips to ensure your experience is safe, fun and full of good food and drinks.I use the HotHands brand when I play outdoor volleyball in the fall and winter months; they're great and last a long time! There's no such thing as too many layersYeah, it'll make going to the bathroom slightly inconvenient, but it's worth the trade-off.
The founders of Vise AI met when they were 13, a couple of teenagers more interested in applied artificial intelligence than English class.Fast-forward several years and the pair has relocated from the Midwest to San Francisco to raise money for a financial technology business they’ve been self-funding since 2016.Whereas most expert explanations would be really complex and very technical.”Meanwhile, school was on autopilot.“It wasn’t very good but we were making a lot of money.” Ultimately, that money funneled into the early makings of a real business, Vise AI, which automates portfolio management using AI and machine learning. In short, the platform analyzes clients’ investment needs and builds them a personalized portfolio of stocks, bonds and other assets, then provides investment manager tools to automate management.

Filling out a checkbox in advance to encourage acceptance won't cut itWebsites may not present visitors with a pre-checked box that signals consent to the storage of HTTP cookies on their devices, according to a ruling [PDF] handed down on Tuesday by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).The decision follows from the German Federation of Consumer Organizations' challenge of German company Planet49's use of a pre-ticked checkbox to obtain permission to place cookies on the devices of players of its online lottery game. They maintain stateful information – keeping data on a user who just visited logged in, for example – because HTTP is a stateless protocol.Planet49 operates an online lottery website that in 2013 presented would-be players with an input box to enter a postal code, a name, and an address, with two sets of checkboxes. The first, to signal consent for various commercial offers, was not pre-selected.
The developer-focused StackOverflow puts PostgreSQL second after MySQL, with Microsoft SQL Server third and Oracle way down at 8th.DB-Engines on the other hand, which measures general discussion, puts Oracle top, followed by MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL 4th.And backup and restore is provided by the pgBackRest extension.Perhaps the most interesting addition is Patroni, developed by online fashion platform Zolando to implement high availability, using Consul, Zookeeper or Etcd, which are existing tools for managing distributed services. The rationale behind the product, according to Chief Experience Officer Matt Yonkovit, is that with PostgreSQL "there's all these extensions to fill in gaps, but they're not supported".Therefore a pre-built and supported package of the core product together with important extensions is useful.
