Amazon officially today announced support for Hindi in its Alexa virtual assistant, allowing users to issue voice commands in the fourth most spoken language in the world. The new Hindi experience is available on all Echo voice-controlled smart speakers, and can be turned on by changing the language setting in the Alexa app.Using machine learning and deep learning models, Amazon said it has addressed the contextual and cultural challenges that helps Alexa understand Hindi better and serve relevant responses to voice queries.Amazon also attributed Cleo, a skill that enables Alexa to acquire language fluency — as a major factor.Cleo, introduced early last year, takes a crowd-sourcing approach that makes it easy for multilingual speakers to train the assistant take on languages the assistant doesn’t yet understand. With over 30,000 skills catering to Indian users across categories such as recipes, entertainment, education, and sports, Rohit Prasad — VP and Head Scientist of Alexa AI at Amazon — said that more than 500 skills on the store have already added Hindi support.
Action on climate change has been focused on the electrical grid and our transportation systems, but there are other hurdles between here and a zero-greenhouse-gas-emissions world.Agriculture and deforestation are major hurdles, but so is cement.Producing this humble, gray, ubiquitous building material actually accounts for about 8% of global CO2 emissions.Firing the kilns required for this process is very energy intensive, but the process itself also releases CO2 from its starting materials. That means there are two problems to solve: the cement-making process needs to run on clean energy, and the CO2 that is released must be captured somehow.Instead of burning fuel to heat a calciner to about 900 C (needed to liberate calcium oxide from CaCO3), they used electricity to split water.

Southeast Asian ride-hailing titan Grab is in talks to merge two Indonesian digital payment firms Ovo and Dana to take on rival Gojek, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.Discussions are private and still at an early stage, the sources said.If an agreement is formed, it would see Grab buying a majority interest in the Ant Financial-backed Dana from Indonesian media conglomerate Elang Mahkota Teknologi (Emtek), then merging it with Ovo, in which it owns shares.“It’s part of the Grab-Gojek battle,” said one of the sources. The discussions follow SoftBank’s announcement that it will pour US$2 billion into Indonesia’s digital infrastructure through Grab.Grab and Ovo declined to comment, while Dana said it does not comment on market rumors.
Dacorum Borough Council wants decorum in town centreA newly introduced Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in the Hertfordshire town of Hemel Hempstead has managed to lump the relatively harmless pastime of cycling in with publicly relieving oneself.Dacorum Borough Council's move, which came into effect on 29 July, aims "to control anti-social behaviour and dog activity in the borough".So of course they're going after the Lycra-clad scourge of highways and byways the length of the county – the cyclist.Oh, and those kids on their skateboards with their beanies and baggie trousers and loud rap music."Cycling and skateboarding in an area of Hemel Hempstead town centre will carry a £75 fine under the PSPO, which also bans spitting," the order reads – including the "discharge of chewing gum" if there was any doubt – as well as "urinating or defecating in a public place".

Button of the Month is a monthly look at what some of those buttons and switches are like on devices old and new, and it aims to appreciate how we interact with our devices on a physical, tactile level.Smart home devices can make people uneasy, what with the “constantly listening to you” and the massive breach of privacy whereby paid human contractors turned out to be listening to recordings from Apple, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Facebook services without users knowing it.But I still use a Google Home Mini, and part of that is because of the physical microphone mute switch on the back that gives a kind of peace of mind that other smart devices don’t.Flip it, and it cuts off the mics on a hardware level, with no way to turn them back on short of flipping the switch back. You push the button, and a light turns on telling you the microphones are muted — but they lack the same physical movement that Google’s button has. There’s no difference between shutting off the mics and raising and lowering the volume, for instance, making the action feel less deliberate and easy to mess up.
With IFA just around the corner, it would be fair to assume a tsunami of consumer devices launches are on the horizon, and here, LG has kicked-off its own efforts. The mid-range K50S and K40S smartphones will be available for consumers in Europe, LATAM and Asia to purchase in October, and it appears LG is continuing its quest to find a niche in the gaming and entertainment world.“These new K series devices offer an optimized multimedia experience that are competitive with the best smartphones in the price range,” said Morris Lee, SVP of mobile communications at LG.“With enhanced screens and more versatile cameras, the K50S and K40S represent exceptional value that demonstrate LG’s commitment to putting consumers’ needs first.”The devices themselves bring larger screens than previous models, 6.5-inch for K50S and 6.1-inch for K40S, as well as a shift in the placement of the front-facing camera to maximise real-estate.New audio components have been introduced with DTS:X 3D Surround Sound, while a 4,000mAh battery for the K50S and 3,500mAh for K40S will offer extended usage.
The perpetrators of one of the UK's worst rail tragedies (model) in recent years have had their day in court, with the judge doing little more than grassing the vandalous teens up to their parents and forcing them to attend some meetings to hear about how bad they have been and to make various promises about it not happening again. In return for admitting their guilt, three of the four teens have been given 12-month referral orders, which as far as we can make out means they have an actual criminal record, but won't be off to any sort of prison, not even a nice one for young people with understanding touchy-feely staff and last-gen PlayStations in the rooms.Their mums and dads have been handed £500 fines to pay too, with the fourth member of the train-trashing gang getting his comeuppance in September. The happy ending is that Peter Davies, chairman of the Market Deeping Model Railway club, told the court that the massive sums raised by donation after the news of the crime went global is being reinvested in a charitable trust that'll fund [sad violin music crescendo] local youth projects.Davies said: "By October we could see 60 young people involved in modelling projects they would never have done before."Perhaps the judge took that punishment into account.
A black hole swallowing a neutron star has likely been detected for the first time, according to scientists. The Australian National University (ANU), which participated in the research, explains that the “cataclysmic event” was detected on Aug. 14, 2019, by gravitational-wave discovery machines in the U.S. and Italy. The machines detected ripples in space and time from an event that happened about 8,550 million trillion kilometers away from Earth, ANU said in a statement.“Neutron stars and black holes are the super-dense remains of dead stars,” it explained, noting that scientists are still studying the data to work out the size of the two objects.FIRST-EVER BLACK HOLE IMAGE REVEALED"About 900 million years ago, this black hole ate a very dense star, known as a neutron star, like Pac-man -- possibly snuffing out the star instantly," said Professor Susan Scott, leader of the General Relativity Theory and Data Analysis Group at ANU and a chief investigator with the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav), in the statement.

We don’t know why, but Android manufacturers are still trying to launch high-end phones with curved screens. After several years with this technology in the market, we already know that they do not bring any real benefit in front of a flat-screen, except for a better front design.Beyond this, it makes the screen more expensive, creates unnecessary reflections with light and multimedia content is inevitably deformed with the curve.Despite this, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro will have an exaggerated curve on the sides of its screen.A new evolution of the curved screens that takes them to the extreme, occupying the entire side of the phone, without leaving room for the physical buttons (which would have to be virtualized in some way). The Mate 30 Pro will have a too pronounced screen curve

Samsung may be looking to create a scrollable media device, according to a patent published Friday by Patently Apple. If the design becomes a reality, it could possibly take the form of a mobile TV, the report suggests.Images from the patent show a cylindrical object from which a flexible display can be pulled and then retract into.Patently Apple suggests Samsung's display division creates devices like the scrollable display, then hands it off to the electronics team to decide what the product will ultimately be, such as a tablet, smartphone or mobile TV.The patent was reportedly filed in 2017, but there's no guarantee the device will become a reality.Samsung didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
