Palaeontologists operating CT scanners have revealed the structure of a 20-million-year-old primate brain, thanks to an extremely well-preserved fossil skull.Understanding the evolution of our wildly complex human brains isn’t easy, and there aren’t ancient brains just sitting around in the dirt to compare with.Instead, researchers must look indirectly for evidence of brain shapes, based on the way brains leave imprints on skulls.“It’s pretty remarkable,” John Flynn, one of the study’s authors and curator of fossil mammals at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, told Gizmodo. The cleaning and subsequent CT scan analysis all reinforced that and the finding’s significance.”The anthropoid branch of the evolutionary tree is broken into two groups: the New World monkeys, called the platyrrhines, and the Old World monkeys and great apes (including humans), called the catarrhines.

Volkswagen provided air travel from Washington, DC, to Monterey, California, and five nights in a hotel for this story. If, like me, you got into cars in the 1990s, that's an easy one to answer—it's the McLaren F1, of course.By the late 1980s, the McLaren Formula 1 team had won almost everything there was to win, and its head designer Gordon Murray was getting bored. It would have three seats, with the driver in the middle. There would be a naturally aspirated V12, a six-speed manual transmission, and no driver aids at all.Along the way, Murray and co. created a car that managed to be leagues faster than anything that came before it, and almost everything that has come since.
Golf sure is a fun sport on its own, especially when you have your gear ready instead of having to rent it.Garmin is no stranger to fitness trackers and the Approach S20 GPS Golf Watch surely won't disappoint as a personal golfing companion.Usually carrying a $170 price tag, you can bring this slick smartwatch to your next Golf match for $145 on Amazon. The Garmin Approach S20 may not look much on the surface with a negative monochrome 128 x 128-pixel display on a 0.9-square-inch screen that reflects a readable font size even under direct sunlight. You would appreciate that it makes for an overall lightweight construction at only 1.6 ounces with a perforated silicone wristband for sizing and ventilation.Since it doesn’t have touchscreen functionality, four low-profile buttons on either side of the watch will enable quick and easy navigation compared to having to tap on a small screen.
Twitter says a significant state-backed information operation involving hundreds of accounts linked to China were part of an effort to deliberately “sow political discord” in Hong Kong after weeks of protests in the region. In a blog post, the social networking site said the 936 accounts it found tried to undermine “the legitimacy and political positions of the protest movement on the ground.”More than a million protesters took to the streets this weekend to demonstrate peacefully against the Chinese government, which took over rule from the British government in 1997.Protests erupted months ago following a bid by Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam to push through a highly controversial bill that would allow criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China for trial. The bill was suspended, effectively killing it from reaching the law books, but protests have continued, pushing back at claims that China is trying to meddle in Hong Kong’s affairs.Although Twitter is banned in China, the social media giant says the latest onslaught of fake accounts is likely “a coordinated state-backed operation.
Due to the sensitive material they must interact with, Facebook's 1,500 on-contract content moderators working in Austin, Texas are entitled to free on-site trauma counseling. On at least some occassions, managers with Accenture — Facebook's contractor who hires and manages the content moderators — has pressured therapists to disclose what happened during counseling sessions with moderators, according to a new report from the Intercept. The allegations were made on an internal employee message board.Contractor Accenture says it has investigated the claim and "confirmed that these allegations are without merit."That's according to a new report from the Intercept which suggests that Accenture — the contractor Facebook has employed to hire and manage their 1,500 content moderators in Austin, Texas — may be able to ask these therapists what the employees have said at any given time.Moderating content on Facebook is a very sensitive job and requires these employees to view sometimes disturbing things like pornography and graphic violence before deciding if it can stay on the website or if it violates Facebook's content rules.
And look how BC Partners' ownership went for themA British cloud software company has sold a 50 per cent stake in itself to the private equity firm that owned British phone retailer Phones4U at the time of its demise. The lucky recipient of a reported £2bn is Slough's Advanced Computer Software Group, a cloud migration services outfit.Advanced's new part-owner is BC Partners, last seen on The Register when Phones4U went into administration in 2014, taking thousands of jobs with it.As we reported at the time, BC Partners had absorbed around £200m in a "special dividend" from Phones4U a year before it went under.Back in 2015, Advanced (as it bills itself now; none of this "computer software" nonsense branding, thank you) was itself acquired by private equity firm Vista Equity Partners for £725m.
We’re only hours away from the Fortnite version 10.10 game update’s release time…or, at least we were until Epic discovered a bug at the very last minute. The company has been forced to delay game update v10.10 so that it has enough time to fix this bug. That means the overpowered mech suit tweak will be delayed slightly, as will the other changes Epic has planned for this release.Epic announced the update time for its version 10.10 patch on the official Fortnite Twitter account earlier today.About five hours later at approximately 7PM ET, Epic published a new tweet advising players that the update has been delayed.‘Due to last minute issues discovered with the build,’ the company said, ‘we’ve had to delay the timing for the release of the v10.10 update.’ Epic doesn’t know when it will be able to release the patch, but promises that it will return with the exact time in a future update.

Researchers from North Carolina State University and Elon University have developed a technique that allows them to remotely control the movement of soft robots, lock them into position for as long as needed and later reconfigure the robots into new shapes. The technique relies on light and magnetic fields."We're particularly excited about the reconfigurability," says Joe Tracy, a professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and corresponding author of a paper on the work."By engineering the properties of the material, we can control the soft robot's movement remotely; we can get it to hold a given shape; we can then return the robot to its original shape or further modify its movement; and we can do this repeatedly. All of those things are valuable, in terms of this technology's utility in biomedical or aerospace applications."For this work, the researchers used soft robots made of a polymer embedded with magnetic iron microparticles.

Tobii’s gaze-tracking hardware for VR headsets is getting some serious software enhancements, the company announced today, in the form of full support for foveated rendering — with “even more foveated-related capabilities and benefits moving forward.” The features are being offered as Tobii Spotlight Technology, with significant initial rendering performance benefits.Foveated rendering is an advanced technology that uses your eye’s position to create a particularly sharp focus point for a GPU to concentrate more of its resources upon, while areas outside that point can be rendered at lower detail levels. In order for the feature to work, the eye’s position needs to be tracked — Tobii’s specialty — and the software needs to have both designated “in focus” and “out of focus” areas, with a rendering pipeline to differentially tackle those areas.Tobii has worked with Nvidia to achieve variable rate shading foveation in Tobii Spotlight, and says that it’s seeing GPU rendering load reductions of up to 57%, bringing the average shading rate using dynamic foveated rendering down to 16% from around 24%.This frees up GPU resources for other purposes, such as boosting frame rates or conserving power, and Tobii expects that it will be used in the future to transfer and stream data that’s been dynamically optimized for the user’s current visual focus, including over low-latency 5G networks.“Tobii Spotlight Technology is advanced eye tracking specialized for foveation,” said Tobii CEO Henrik Eskilsson.
Early adopters of Peloton’s fitness bikes are in for a pricey upgrade: this week, the company announced via an email to users that it will stop sending updates to bikes using the first generation of its touchscreen monitor. This model was sold in 2014 when Peloton first launched its bike before releasing a second iteration in 2016 that allows users to cast their screen to a smart TV.Peloton says users with the first-generation screen on their bikes will still be able to ride and access live stream and on-demand content as usual, but they will stop receiving support for new features.(We’ve contacted Peloton to clarify whether this includes bug fixes, and we will update when we hear back.)In the past few months, lag and performance issues had been a problem for users with an older monitor on their bike as the company continues to push out new updates for music control, wireless headphone support, and workout metric displays.Peloton is offering affected users a discount code to purchase the latest version of its screen (now in its third generation) for $350 — which is more than 50 percent off of the full value of $750 — for those who wanted to upgrade before this week’s news.
Capital One's data was breached some time between March and July. The bank didn't know about the hack until a member of the public emailed it to say they found the data dumped on GitHub, a popular site among web developers, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said.Tip-offs like this are a common way for companies to find out about security breaches.Capital One was only made aware of its enormous data breach because a member of the public emailed the company after seeing the information freely available online. Many of those people had their personal information, social security details, and linked bank accounts compromised.Read more: Capital One says it was hit with data breach, affecting tens of millions of credit card applications
Singulato has hired Japanese chassis expert Takaaki Uno to act as CTO for Vehicle Engineering as the Chinese EV maker attempts to achieve production of its first commercial SUV model, the iS6, by the end of 2019.Why it matters: Uno is tasked with helping Singulato to achieve what countless other Chinese EV startups have not; deliver cars to customers.Shipments of the iS6 have been pushed back multiple times originally from 2018, now to the end of the year. They include Nio, Xpeng, and WM Motor.Even those successful are still finding the going tough.Nio issued a massive recall in June after three of its flagship ES8 SUVs caught fire separately in a three-month period.
OpenBazaar is an Amazon, eBay, and Alibaba alternative devoid of data collection and fees.Could such an idyllic system be real?NOTE: I need to be CLEAR here – I am equal parts surprised that this system could exist AND skeptical that it’s actually real.UPDATE 2: If it weren’t already evident, I am personally quite skeptical of this entire system.Right this moment, I would exercise extreme caution if you’ve not yet already actively made use of OpenBazaar elsewhere. The app looks great, and from what I understand OpenBazaar works pretty good for the people that’ve thus far made it work – but it all seems… too great.
But for anyone who wants the absolute best possible audio from their PC, the discrete Sound Blaster AE-9 from Creative is an excellent choice. This device includes an ESS Technology digital-to-analog converter with a 129Db dynamic range. The AE-9 is going to get the absolute best out of any decent headphones or speakers. On a track like Massive Attack’s “Angel,” the bass will boom and rumble without rattling like a subwoofer in the back of a cheap Camry.Creative’s AE-9 has the power the accuracy to distinguish between every weapon and voice during a firefight. In a level like Sigil in Hitman 2, even the quiet can feel overwhelming with the blowing ocean breeze, crashing waves, and large murmuring crowds.
Despite the growing number of evidence and cases of mobile software that blatantly violate user privacy, it’s almost impossible to imagine life these days without a smartphone. One of those is Purism who has finally finalized the specs and features of its crowdfunded privacy-respecting Librem 5 phone. There is still some debate on the pros and cons of a completely different mobile platform for the sake of privacy and openness. With Linux as the only option, users will be forced to make a choice between those ideals and the familiarity of Android or iOS and their apps. For some users, however, that’s fine which is part of what made the Librem 5 crowdfunding in 2-17 a success. Two years later, however, Purism still has to deliver on the promise.
If Huawei smartphones are good for anything, it's for having impressive camera loadouts, and we don't expect that to change for the upcoming Huawei Mate 30 Pro – but a specs leak suggests an intriguing new camera configuration.Reliable leaker @UniverseIce posted on Twitter the message "40+40+8+ToF.While that might seem cryptic, we're expecting the Google Pixel 4 and iPhone 11 to launch with three cameras, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Plus to have three and five respectively, so the only major smartphone we're expecting to see soon with four cameras is the Huawei Mate 30 Pro.So let's assume this leak is referring to the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, and not some unknown new device (unlikely, since most leakers only leak information on anticipated smartphones). These are its rumored cameras:The ToF camera (Time-of-Flight) speaks for itself – it's a type of sensor used to measure distance, to add an appropriate level of background blur to portrait shots.

We've tested 5G speeds in multiple cities around the world, from Los Angeles to Seoul. The new technology is characterized by ultrafast speeds that can download movies in seconds and enable huge chunks of data to transfer between the phone and the network with limited lag.But 5G has also been the subject of intense focus by countries whose governments see the race to 5G as a proxy for their political and economic strength -- just look at how 5G is embroiled in the trade war between the US and China. Here are our biggest takeaways about 5G data so far, based on the testing we've done over the last few months.Consistency is more satisfying than speedFor some future uses of 5G, pushing down a lot of data really quickly will let you do cool, resource-intensive things on the fly, like play smooth, real-time games with high-res graphics and participate in lag-free video chats while walking down the street.
