Last year, Photoshop introduced a tool called ‘Select Subject’ that made it super simple to select a primary subject from an image – or at least give you a decent starting point.Problem was, this feature worked across the entire image; you’d have to do some extra work if you only wanted to select one subject out of multiple or isolate a particular item.Today Adobe gave us a sneak peek at a new AI-powered ‘Object Selection’ tool coming to Photoshop that makes selecting particular subjects easier than ever. The new feature lives alongside the magic wand and quick selection tools and is presented as a simple rectangle marquee. All you have to do is roughly cover your intended subject with the rectangle and Photoshop will automatically puzzle out what you’re trying to select. You could, for example, select one person out of a group of friends, making it easy to replace that one person you don’t like.
Fitbit shares surged Monday on a report that Google's parent company Alphabet is looking into buying the wearable company.Alphabet has "made an offer" to buy Fitbit, Reuters reports, though terms weren't disclosed. After briefly being halted, shares of Fitbit resumed trading late Monday morning, with the company's stock price rising by nearly 28% to $5.51 at time of writing.Fitbit is the maker of popular wearables and fitness trackers including the recent Versa 2 smartwatch.Unlike the Apple Watch, which is iPhone-only, Fitbit's products work on both iOS and Google's Android platform.Google has tried in the past to develop its own wearable platform called WearOS to rival Apple's smartwatch, but early efforts have failed to catch on with consumers, despite attracting a host of high-profile partners such as Tag Heuer, Fossil, Michael Kors and Movado.
So you’ve got your colonist in mind. But before you head out on your grand adventures across the cosmos, you should consider exactly what type of build you’re going for.The Outer Worlds allows players to roll many different characters, from hammer-wielding rough and tumble types, to clever mechanics, turning droids and weapons on the enemy.Rather than merely sinking points into lock picking, for example, you’ll invest in the stealth category which also encompasses sneaking and lockpicking.Once you hit certain thresholds, you can begin to specialize in the distinct skills within each category. These roles such as a cashier, factory worker, or medical technician reflect what you were or would have been, had the colony ship not been lost among the stars.
It’s contextual, fitting for the story and the artistic themes of the game about where soldiers have to draw the line in modern warfare.Parents should pay attention this year to the mature rating on the game (here is our full review). But some of the scenes are already quite controversial, and I’ve included them as videos in this post. This scene is a flashback to 20 years ago.A young girl awakens in a bombed building. He begins to carry her home to find her brother, only to find that Russia troops are pulling in and executing people in mass shootings.

The Daydream View VR headset isn’t the only product Google has discontinued this week. The company is no longer selling its AI-powered Google Clips, a small camera designed to leverage modern technology in order to automatically capture and preserve life’s most memorable moments. The product page for the device is still featured on the Google Store website, but it now redirects users to other available devices.Put simply, Google Clips was a small square camera designed to automatically record memorable moments during your day. This ability relied on artificial intelligence, the idea being that by the time something interesting happens, it’ll likely already be over by the time you pull out your phone to record it.Google Clips was unlike any other camera consumers were likely to encounter, one with the appeal of promising a hands-free experience (for the most part).

As we saw in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, strange things can be hidden inside bank vaults.Sometimes, they have the ability to change the world.Dust has released a short film where a man is given a key to a mystery that threatens everything he ever knew.Box 616 is the latest sci-fi short film from Mitch Glass (who also directed the stellar short Again ), shot for two days inside a bank vault with a budget of about $800 (£632).It’s about a man named Malcolm Crowe, who’s informed by the local bank that a trust, well, entrusted to him by his grandfather is now available. The safety deposit box, empty except for a single key and an old matchbook, had instructions to be opened on a specific day, which has now come to pass.

After a number of setbacks in the first half of the year, Nio may be poised for a rebound. The beleaguered electric vehicle (EV) maker said on Tuesday that car deliveries in the third quarter exceeded the top end of its guided range. Why it matters: Nio’s efforts to boost sales of its second mass-produced model, the ES6, is paying off.The company kicked off a series of major promotions beginning in August after it began delivering the five-seat luxury SUV in late June.Nio introduced in late August an unlimited free battery swap along with its existing lifetime vehicle maintenance policy to first-time buyers of its ES8 and ES6 models, which “attracted a large group of potential users,” said Louis Hsieh, Nio’s chief financial officer during the Q2 earnings call last month. The automaker then extended its auto financing programs, offering a three-year, interest-free loan for domestic buyers, as well as a five-year “zero down payment” promotion in Shanghai, which significantly boosted orders beginning in September, Hsieh said.
CORVALLIS, Ore. - An autonomous systems expert at Oregon State University is helping to lead an effort to build research infrastructure for the safety, performance and security of driverless cars, supported by a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation. The project, a collaborative effort with the University of Pennsylvania and Clemson University, will put one-tenth-scale autonomous cars into the hands of researchers nationwide. They are working with the smaller cars because they are less expensive and safer to use.Houssam Abbas, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering at Oregon State, is one of the project's principal investigators. He has been using the miniature vehicles for his own research areas such as cyber-physical security, and he has a bigger vision for the impact the cars could have for other researchers."If you want to see these autonomous systems developed with high performance and a high guarantee of safety and security, then you need everybody to pitch in," Abbas said.
Ecosystem is not just a concept from 6th Grade Science Camp or a segment from some beautifully-filmed, British-narrated nature series. In many ways, the cloud has delivered on the promise of the positive benefits of an ecosystem by creating platforms where everyone can benefit. While many of the companies on AppExchange have built apps to integrate Salesforce with their own existing software offering, some have chosen to exclusively develop apps that are 100 percent native to Salesforce.Companies that have seen particular success investing into the Salesforce platform include Apttus ($1.3 billion valuation), ServiceMax (sold to GE for $915 million), and Veeva Systems ($3 billion marketing capitalization). And if yes, with all of the development-focused companies operating in the space, who is best positioned to execute on such a strategy? Now, with last year’s purchase by Microsoft supporting them, it is clear that GitHub has a real opportunity to continue building out a robust ecosystem, with billion dollar companies built upon what could turn into a powerful platform.
The eyebrow-raising creation, known as DeepCom, was developed by a group of engineers at Beihang University and Microsoft, China.“Automatic news comment generation is beneficial for real applications but has not attracted enough attention from the research community,” they said in a paper released on arXiv late last month.Allowing readers to post comments under articles keeps them engaged, they argued.Open dialogue allows people to discuss their opinions and share new information.“Such systems can enable commenting service for a news website from cold start, enhance the reading experience for less commented news articles, and enrich skill lists of other artificial intelligence applications, such as chatbots,” they said. The paper didn’t mention any potential malicious applications of the technology, however, when there are obviously many potential downsides.
Google is apparently tweaking Pixel phones' Emergency Information app so it'll automatically call 911 if you get into a car crash, XDA Developers reported. It's unclear if the feature will come to all Pixel phones or only to the upcoming Pixel 4.The updated app, renamed "Personal Safety," uses your location and sensor readings from the accelerometer and microphone to detect if you've been in a crash. It then plays an alert at maximum volume and vibrates. If you don't mute the app, it automatically calls emergency services and gives them your location. The emergency call feature isn't showing up on Pixel phones yet -- Google might be holding off for its Pixel 4 reveal on Oct. 15 -- and it'll only be available in the US initially, according to XDA Developers.

If you’re an excited Microsoft fan waiting with bated breath for Wednesday’s Surface event, look away now.Well, unless you don’t really care about the convention and fanfare around a company unveiling its own products of course.Yes, thanks to intrepid internet adventurer Evan Blass, we now have (what appear to be) proper photos of the majority of Microsoft’s new Surface gear.Blass has been accurate with his leaks in the past and with the Microsoft event so close, it’d be a shock if these weren’t legitimate. But, you never know, better people than myself have been duped before. Now that little disclaimer is out the way, let’s actually have a look at these devices.
Pinterest is jumping on the dark mode bandwagon. On Monday, September 30, Pinterest began rolling out a dark mode for both the iOS and Android apps, so you can keep pinning into the night with less glare from your phone. The change displays the usual Pins on a black background, along with a dark menu background, and works when the smartphone’s dark mode is activated.Android users can turn the feature on independent of the device’s display settings.A darker screen background can help ease eye strain when using a screen in the dark. With some types of screens (OLEDs) a black pixel is simply a turned off pixel, which means that a black background can help conserve battery life on some devices.
That was the sound of millions of Spider-Man fans celebrating the news that Marvel Comics’ beloved web-slinger is likely to get at least one more movie set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But now Spider-Man is, reportedly, back in the mix in the MCU — and if the two studios play it smart, it could make the web-slinger bigger than ever.In the report detailing the studios’ move back to the bargaining table, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige — the producer on Spider-Man’s MCU films and architect of the cinematic universe — hinted at the character’s unique, universe-hopping potential.“[Spider-Man] happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse, you never know what surprises the future might hold,” teased Feige. That one sentence offers a lot to unpack for anyone familiar with Spider-Man’s current big-screen environment. While Marvel has a well-established (but still rapidly expanding) cinematic universe, Sony has also been hard at work laying the foundation for its own interconnected Spider-verse (not to be confused with the animated movie of the same name).
PITTSBURGH (Sept. 26, 2019) -- Amir H. Alavi, PhD, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Pittsburgh's Swanson School of Engineering, has spent much of his career developing sensors to monitor the health of large, complex structures like bridges and roads. Now, he has applied those skills to a smaller and even more complex structure--the human spine.Alavi received $393,670 in funding from the National Institutes of Health to design and test a miniature, implantable, and battery-free sensor to monitor spinal fusion progress after surgery.Spinal fusion is performed to treat a wide variety of spinal disorders.During the spinal fusion surgery, a special type of bone screw and symmetrical titanium or stainless-steel rods are implanted to stabilize vertebrae movement, which allow bone grafts to incorporate into the adjacent vertebra.Of the over 400,000 lumbar spinal fusion surgeries performed each year, approximately 30 percent of cases experience post-operative complications.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha, which we reffered to earlier as the Mi MIX 4, will be unveiled on Tuesday. And there couldn’t be a more secretive device in the whole of 2019 than this new MIX iteration.Whatever Xiaomi has in store, it looks to be a unique exciting concept that the company doesn’t want ruined and it has done an excellent job on this. However, a leaked internal PPT has come up that shows us the wrap-around display teased in Xiaomi’s last official teaser. This image is probably from a launch presentation excersie and shows how the curved display curves all the way to the back. Now, this still doesn’t reveal the rear of the phone but shows some features such as a Face ID substitute, an eSIM feature, and an NFC.
After shooting with the high-end Pro model for the past two days, with its three cameras, I can say that this generation is far less a phone and much more a camera. And I can also say: If you love taking photos, you're going to love the iPhone 11 Pro.In addition to the standard wide lens, which has a 26mm equivalent frame, there's the 52mm telephoto lens, which has been upgraded to a wider f/2.0 effective aperture allowing in 40% more light. But you can see below that as the sun set and I lost much of that light, the ultrawide lens images are very soft, even appearing to be out of focus.A yellow moon icon simply lets you know the software is going to need you to be a little extra steady for its simulated "long exposure" of one, two or three seconds. The end result is an image that preserves the night and just cleans it up a bit.
Nugget dropped in keynote focused on cloud and AI announcementsConnect 2019 Huawei will plough $1.5bn into a developer programme to swell the ranks of coders that write software for its kit in an apparent effort to counter moves by the American government to ban US suppliers from dealing with the Chinese firm.Despite Hu's insistence that "I think we are doing fine," uncertainty about Huawei's future relationship with the US and how that impacts both on its market and its use of technology – such as Arm processors, Google's Android and Microsoft's Windows – must make strategic planning difficult.Just three weeks ago, Google confirmed Huawei's new smartphone, the Mate 30, which was released today, will not include Google Maps, YouTube and Gmail because of US sanctions preventing Huawei from doing business with American companies. The MateBook X Pro laptop, for example, now has the option to come with deepin Linux in place of Windows.Huawei has also developed an open-source operating system called Hongmeng or Harmony OS for IoT devices and perhaps at some point for smartphones.
In a quaint Victorian house on a quaint park-adjacent corner of San Francisco on Tuesday, Andrew Bozworth, Facebook's VP of AR/VR, and Ryan Cairns, head of Portal devices, showed off three new products in the company's line of Portal smart displays. The $129 8-inch Portal Mini and $149 Portal TV are new for the social media giant. While the Portal and the 8-inch Portal Mini have a fresh, boxy design, their focus is the same as last year's Portal screens: video chatting with your friends and family.Facebook raised a lot of eyebrows when it introduced its first round of Portal devices last fall amid ongoing reports of privacy breaches.Video chatting was the main draw of the original Portal and the $349 Portal Plus, which Facebook will continue to sell at a reduced price of $279.Both the 720-pixel Portal and the 1080p Portal Plus are high-quality video chat devices, thanks to their 12-megapixel image sensors, 140-degree viewing angles and person-tracking capabilities.
