After falling flat with the Ionic, the company’s second true smartwatch finally delivered on the promise of high-profile acquisitions, including Pebble and Vector, with a smartwatch the could truly compete with Apple’s.In fact, the product helped jump-start Fitbit’s sputtering stock and appeared to be the first step on its road to recovery.Although it was right to have price point at front of mind, it wasn’t enough to justify the loss of several key features.A year and a half after the first Versa, Fitbit finally returns with the follow-up, the apply named Versa 2.The new version of the device isn’t a radical departure, but looks to be a pretty solid upgrade.I don’t anticipate too many Versa 1 owners making the upgrade here, but there’s a lot to like in the new version.

Google is rolling out an update to its Nest Hello Smart Doorbell camera that will allow them to detect when a package is delivered. The feature will begin rolling out today, but only in the US and only to folks who have a Nest Aware subscription.According to Google, the update to the smart cam will allow it to detect when a package is delivered and when it’s picked up by someone, and send you a notification for both events. All of this should happen automatically however, if your front porch is poorly lit or hard to recognize, Google is recommending that you draw an activity zone around the area where packages are delivered to facilitate more accurate tracking. That said, if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t need a notification every time an Amazon package is delivered you can turn the feature off from the Nest app’s home screen.Google gets one step closer to Amazon

Intel’s 10th Gen chips are making their way into the world, and Lenovo has a bunch of new ThinkPads that are getting the new processors that it’s announcing today. The new laptops are largely the same as the previous designs, aside from the boosted specs, so don’t expect too drastic of an update.Leading those laptops is a new ThinkPad X1 Carbon, the seventh generation of the hardware that Lenovo has released.New this year is Intel’s just-announced 10th Gen Comet Lake chips in both Core i5 and Core i7 options (including a hexacore Core i7 model). It also has Intel’s Project Athena label, meaning it’s guaranteed (in theory) to provide at least nine hours of battery life. The new chips will be available in September starting at $1,479.

There’s no doubt that Microsoft is working on a foldable dual-screen Surface device, and as time goes on, potential details about the project continue to come to light by way of government filings. In the latest, a patent reveals how users could be able to play with apps on the device — without any lag or other issues.Originally published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in November 2018, this latest patent for “Display Device Selection Based on Hardware Configuration” was recently discovered by the Windows Latest blog. The patent specifically points out that a device with dual-screen setup could feature different hardware configurations — one for each screen. This would solve any potential performance-related issues for apps, as the computing “modules” would determine configurations and transfer apps to the right screen accordingly. This wouldn’t be new ground for Microsoft, as there are other types of hardware in the Surface lineup that are similarly complex.

This beautiful and distinctive object captured by the Hubble Space Telescope is a planetary nebula called NGC 2371/2, located in the constellation of Gemini (The Twins). It has an unusual name because of its unusual shape — when astronomers first studied the nebula, they thought it was two different structures, so it was named NGC 2371 and NGC 2372.However, the object is actually a singular nebula with two separate lobes. As we discussed last week, despite its name a planetary nebula actually has nothing to do with planets. In the case of NGC 2371/2, it was formed when a star similar to our sun reached the end of its life.In its final phases of life as a red giant, it threw off its outer layers of gas.

Respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts Apple will release three new iPhones in the second half of 2020, all of which will be powered by 5G.Apple expert James Cordwell says this is good news for business owners and that 5G will inspire ideas we may not yet be able to imagine — just like 4G gave rise to Instagram. It seems they won't have to give up their beloved devices in favour of 5G, with all the signs pointing to Apple joining their competitors in embracing the new technology.Apple will be making its 5G debut nearly a year after Samsung and Huawei, but for the tech giant to be lagging behind rivals when it comes to embracing new tech is nothing new, according to Apple expert James Cordwell. He explains: "When you look at the previous two generations, the original iPhone didn't have 3G when most existing handsets did, and there was a similar situation with 4G.I think that when it adopts a new technology standard, Apple needs to be confident that the supply chain can manufacture 100 to 150 million parts, which is how many they'll sell on an annual basis, so that requires a certain amount of maturity in the supply chain.

Get paid, Katie the capuchin. It’s a tough industry out there, for simians or otherwise. The Hollywood Reporter’s latest hot Hollywood casting scoop is that Katie – a female capuchin monkey best known for turns in The Loop, 30 Rock, and yes, Friends – is making a long-awaited return to acting by snapping up the role of Ampersand on FX’s adaptation of Y: The Last Man.The trade writes, “THR checked in with representatives for Katie’s animal trainer, who confirmed the casting as well as her age: She’s currently in her mid- to late 20s and still has plenty of career left as capuchin monkeys can live to the ripe old age of 40.”Ampersand, a male capuchin in Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s beloved post-apocalyptic comic series, becomes one of Yorick’s closest friends when, like his trainer/owner, he becomes one half of the last surviving male mammals in the wake of a sudden deadly plague outbreak that wipes out every other male on the planet. While Ampersand is a big get in 2019's incredibly-stacked monkey-role market, Katie will likely forever be known for her turn as Ross Gellar’s ill-advised pet choice, Marcel the Monkey.

Politicians, scientists, and others gathered in Borgarfjörður, Iceland, northeast of Reykjavik on Sunday to mourn the loss of the Okjökull glacier, laying a plaque warning of the impact of climate change, the BBC reported. It was officially declared inactive by glaciologist Oddur Sigurðsson in 2014, when he discovered that snow was melting before it could accumulate on the cap, and there was no longer enough pressure being built up to keep the glacier moving. At that point, the word jökull (meaning glacier or ice cap) was eliminated from its name, leaving the site formally designated by the name of the shield volcano it was located on, Ok.According to Slate, Rice University anthropologists Cymene Howe and Dominic Boyer were disturbed to see that the elimination of the glacier was almost entirely ignored in the English-language news media, filming a documentary titled Not Ok and later concluding the glacier’s demise should be commemorated.Attendees at the event included Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir, Environment Minister Gudmundur Ingi Gudbrandsson, and former Irish President Mary Robinson, according to the BBC.In the next 200 years, all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path.

It sold to Yahoo for $1.1 billion dollars in 2013, then withered as Yahoo sold itself to AOL, AOL sold itself to Verizon, and Verizon realized it was a phone company after all.Through all that, the site’s fierce community hung on: it’s still Taylor Swift’s go-to social media platform, and fandoms of all kinds have a home there. But to Verizon’s credit, it chose to sell Tumblr to Automattic, the company behind Wordpress, the publishing platform that runs some 34 percent of the world’s websites. There’s been some features on WordPress certainly inspired by Tumblr over the years, and I was bummed when it sold to Yahoo, which was 2013 now. There was an exclusive period and then the deadline, and we got everything signed up on Sunday.I believe that terminology is the deal is “subject to customary closing conditions.” So it’s going to take, call it a few months to actually transfer everything over.

If you live in a tiny flat, it’s doubtful you have the luxury of a walk-in shower. The Aircurv is an expanding inflatable curtain that lets you move around and stretch out without rubbing up against a wall of wet plastic.DISLIKE: Blowing it up is no easy feat. But sailing isn’t exactly a cheap pastime, and using the same fibreglass battens in a shower curtain would dramatically increase the price of a household item that can cost less than £20 As a cheaper alternative, McLeod engineered the Aircurv with inflatable battens instead. But McLeod feels his unique design offers some distinct advantages over other products, including curved shower rods.Installing the Aircurv is easy enough using the same 12 curtain rings that your existing shower curtain does, although I did find that the chunkier plastic rings on my curtain rod wouldn’t squeeze through the pre-punched holes on the Aircurv.

When President Donald Trump signed an executive order in May banning US companies from trading information and communications technology with foreign businesses deemed a national security risk, it effectively prevented Chinese telecom giant Huawei from acquiring the American technology that it needs to market its products. The same week, Europe began testing an alternative financial clearing system to circumvent US sanctions against Iran, and Russia has said that it wants to join.Japan and South Korea are drifting toward a low-level economic war, after Japan restricted key chemicals needed by the South Korean tech industry in retaliation for South Korean demands for reparations. These incidents make clear that we are in a new era in which one nation's economic interdependence on another can be wielded as a political weapon--a phenomenon described as "weaponized interdependence" by Henry Farrell (George Washington University) and Abraham L. Newman (Georgetown University) in a new article in International Security.(Read "Weaponized Interdependence: How Global Economic Networks Shape State Coercion": https://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/full/10.1162/isec_a_00351)This pathbreaking research illuminates how powerful states exert leverage over key products, services, or materials, and use their influence for coercive ends in the globalized economy.

Pakistani bloke extradited to US, accused of masterminding telco hack caperAT staff were bribed $1m to slip the codes to unlock two million smartphones to a gang operating out of Pakistan, US prosecutors have claimed. When those telco workers took too long to cough up the codes, the crew bought copies of the employees' work login credentials and used them to go straight into the cellular giant's systems and directly request the codes themselves, it is claimed.Specifically, we're told, the crooks installed malware on AT's computers that automated the process of generating and downloading the codes. And when those AT staffers were caught and fired for leaking their usernames and passwords, the foreign gang paid someone to install wireless routers on the US giant's internal network that gave them backdoor access to the telco's systems to, again, silently and secretly obtain phone unlock codes, it is alleged. These unlock codes can be used to free a handset from AT, allowing it to use a SIM and cellular plan from another network.
