Borrowing much of what they ve learned from Niantic s first game, Ingress, Pokémon Go is almost less of a game in its own right then it is, for lack of a better word, an excuse… but an excuse to do good things, instead of their faster/more convenient alternatives.I meet up with part of the team behind the game and head off to the Embarcadero, a destination about a mile from where we re starting.Specifically, we re at Cupid s Span — an iconic, comically huge statue of a bow and arrow piercing through the soil. You ready for a battle? When you create a character in Pokémon Go, you join one of three teams: yellow, blue, or red.The timing of Pokémon Go is rather brilliant, finding its way into the world right as a bunch of things converge: Google s early experiments with Ingress have already proven that people will be damned near obsessed with this general idea — and that s without having the energy of an existing IP s fanbase behind it.

This comes just a few weeks after rumors surfaced that the tech giant would be following Google's example and release an Echo competitor.Whatever the tech giant decides, it's clear that it cannot put all its eggs in the iPhone basket, as the global smartphone market is expected to slow considerably over the next few years. The pool of first-time buyers in these countries is shrinking rapidly, and sales are now primarily coming from phone upgrades.Meanwhile, emerging markets will continue to see robust shipment growth.India and Indonesia, in particular, will help fuel a large share of the shipments growth within the global smartphone market over the next few years. Will McKitterick, senior research analyst at BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service, has compiled a detailed report on smartphones by country that forecasts the market through 2021 to reflect slower, stabilizing growth in the long term. Here are some key points from the report:The global smartphone market is still growing at a steady pace due to more widespread adoption in emerging markets.Nevertheless, India has a long way to go before it surpasses China as the world s leading market for smart handsets.India is estimated to account for roughly 10% of the global smartphone market in 2016, considerably less than China s 30% share. The global platform wars are over, even as smartphone adoption continues to rise across various markets worldwide.Still, the vendor saw a slight decline in YoY growth of its share of the market in the face of stiff competition from Samsung and Chinese vendors such as Huawei. In full, the report:Forecasts global smartphone shipments through 2021.Explores why India is the next high-growth smartphone market.Breaks down the global smartphone platform wars.Discusses smartphone vendor performance market share. To get your copy of this invaluable guide, choose one of these options:Subscribe to an ALL-ACCESS Membership with BI Intelligence and gain immediate access to this report AND over 100 other expertly researched deep-dive reports, subscriptions to all of our daily newsletters, and much more.

The most high-tech room in your house may soon be your bathroom. At least, if you consider bringing a dentist into your home by way of a true 21st-century toothbrush. Thanks to the latest new smart toothbrush from Philips Sonicare, which bears the rather unwieldy name of the Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Connected, you ll have unprecedented insights as to just how you re brushing your teeth, and whether you re brushing certain parts of your mouth too much or too little. And better still, you ll see how much pressure you re applying, and if it s too heavy or too light. And of course, because both the app and the toothbrush itself feature a timer, you ll know when you ve hit the recommended two-minute mark.Claiming 10 times more plaque removal and healthier gums when compared to results of a manual toothbrush, the new smart brush also boasts three modes and three intensities, two different brushheads, and a UV brush head sanitizer.

When will we stop using "123456" and "qwerty" to protect our accounts ?, wonder Simon Campanello. Two of them, LinkedIn and Tumblr, have been added in the past month. It hardly gets better further down the list, "baseball", usual forename and friendly "welcome" are other popular options. So not only do millions of people log on to their private accounts with the first combination of letters or numbers they see when they look down at their keyboards. Police raided the then 27-year-old hacker's home, but before they took him caught Jeremy lock their laptop. It was easy to guess - Chewy was in fact the name of Jeremy's cat.

Twitter is introducing a notable upgrade to its Fabric mobile app today, one that will give developers access to a host of new usage metrics.First launched in 2014, Fabric is a mobile development toolkit that helps app developers build more stable apps, and develop revenue, through analyzing crashes and user sessions.A few months back, Twitter claimed that more than two billion devices now have at least one installed app that s tracked through Fabric. In February, Twitter introduced Fabric mobile apps for iOS and Android, apps that offer some of the functionality available on the big-screen version of the service. And today, Twitter is turbocharging Fabric for mobile with new usage metrics, including daily active users DAU , monthly active users MAU , and retention rates, letting developers track the evolution of user activity over time. The questions driving key product decisions are often asked in meeting rooms and hallways, explained Twitter product manager Meekal Bajaj, in a blog post. However, the lack of access to data in the moment means those questions are often left unresolved. The upshot of today s update is that developers will no longer have to switch on their laptop to dig deeper into their numbers — they ll be able to easily see how many new users they re notching up on a daily or monthly basis, along with historical figures that show how an app is growing or shrinking .

Hands-free kits for vehicles are supposed to remove the dangers that come with driving while conducting a phone call. But new research from psychologists has found that having a hands-free conversation is just as distracting for drivers as holding a phone in their hands. One group was allowed to drive undisturbed, while another two groups were asked questions from a loudspeaker placed 3 feet away.On average, those engaged in conversations took just under a second longer to respond to hazards such as pedestrians stepping out into the road and swerving cars.It was discovered that when drivers were asked to recall something, like where they left an item, they concentrated on an area four times smaller than normal because they were picturing the room where they left it.If drivers are so easily distracted by conversations, maybe we should consider a ban on talking to passengers?

Intel is making it easier to join meetings via the iPad with its Unite meeting room technology. But the chip-maker hopes to reach a wider audience by getting its software pre-installed in PCs.It remains to be seen whether most PC buyers welcome the move, or consider the technology to be unwanted bloatware.Unite helps start meetings quickly, which helps save time and money.Videos can be shared between participants in meetings, which is an improvement over the ability to share only static images and Powerpoint slides.Garrison said Unite will also make its way into areas like Internet of Things, which is a major area of focus for Intel as it moves beyond being just a PC company.

The founder of X, Alphabet Inc. s research and development facility, is bringing his online education company to Germany to help the likes of Volkswagen AG and BMW AG gear up for technological changes such as the self-driving car.Udacity Inc., which offers so-called nanodegrees online and has developed courses with Facebook Inc. and Amazon.com Inc., is expanding to Germany because its banks, energy companies and carmakers are struggling to equip staff and find enough workers with the right skills as their industries are disrupted by technology, said founder and President Sebastian Thrun, who worked on Google s self-driving car project.Among the company CEOs I talk to, there is a very crisp and clear understanding that their future depends on their own workforce s ability to master contemporary technology -- things like artificial intelligence, big data, cyber security and mobile, Thrun said in an interview in Berlin, where Udacity may hire additional workers in the near future.German carmakers are scrambling to adapt as urbanization and changing attitudes toward cars redefine how customers view transportation.Volkswagen, which has pledged to introduce more electric cars and invest in self-driving and internet-connected vehicles, should introduce programs to retrain staff in positions that will become obsolete in the shift to the new vehicles, according to Bernd Osterloh, the company s top worker representative. We expect to see a comprehensive qualification program as a key building block in the pact for the future, Osterloh said Tuesday at a gathering of 20,000 employees in Wolfsburg. If we can teach Silicon Valley startup skills, we can make Germany a much more creative, impactful place in the world, he said.

With that sort of resume, it s hard to pinpoint just 10 Intel CPU launches that shook things up the most, but with the help of a few friends and PCWorld editors, I believe I ve narrowed things down to a nice crop of contenders. That achievement seemed almost miraculous for the time, and it paved the way for the PC revolution that would play out over the next decade. The 8008, while very primitive by today's standards, laid the groundwork that would later be expanded upon with Intel s 8080, 8085, 8086 CPUs that powered much of the early PC industry.See larger imageIntroduced: April 1974How it shook things up: If you ve heard of the MITS Altair 8800, the computer kit that effectively launched the personal computer industry, then you know why the 8080 was important.See larger imageIntroduced: March 22, 1993How it shook things up: After a U.S. court decided that numbers like 80386 could not be trademarked, x86 knock-off competitors during the 486 era, such as Cyrix and AMD, flourished by undercutting Intel with less-expensive chips that were often branded as 486 chips too.The Core series, with its impressive performance-per-watt ratio, changed the competitive balance dramatically, and the affordably dual-core Core 2 Duo series once again made Intel the must-have PC CPU vendor in a big way.

Scientists finally have a theory as to why comet 67P—also known as Rosetta s comet—has two distinct lobes. On seeing those cracks in the first high-resolution images acquired by the Rosetta spacecraft in August 2014, Masatoshi Hirabayashi and Daniel Scheeres immediately realized they could be looking at the traces of a violent history. To simulate the evolution of comet 67P, the researchers modelled 1,000 comet clones under varying conditions over the course of 5,000 years—the expected lifetime of a so-called Jupiter-family comet. When the spin rate for a comet 67P lookalike was increased to less than 7 hours, the comet s head popped clean off.But it didn t slingshot away—instead, it remained gravitationally tethered to its other half. While it s not yet clear how often breakup should occur, the researchers note that periodic comets are regularly torqued by the gravity the sun and Jupiter as they traverse our solar system.
