Even founder Daniel Gross has a hard time explaining Pioneer.Over the course of one phone call, he compared it to Fortnite Battle Royale, Airbnb, Google, a sci-fi novel, a human accelerator, and an Ivy League campus.Gross launched the project he claims will change the world in August 2018.Then, he described Pioneer as a bias-free search engine for human ingenuity. In newspapers, blog posts, and on television, Gross said the fund/tournament was designed to identify “lost Einsteins”—hidden geniuses with the potential to effect change—at an early stage using software and put them on the path to greatness.Since then, tens of thousands of people from around the globe have entered Pioneer’s eponymous tournament—a convoluted, semi-anonymous online competition that uses software and game mechanics like points, quests, and leaderboards to quantify participants’ real-world productivity and incentivize behaviors Gross and his team believe are key to success.
You could look at its features (size, year built, or available amenities), compile the neighborhood’s statistics (population or median household income), or monitor economic indicators of the country’s housing market.Put a Starbucks or a high-end hotel nearby, and our intuition tells us this could increase the demand for the surrounding area. However, placing a multimillion-dollar bet on a property is risky, and investors want to base their decisions on data.Luckily, we now have a wealth of geospatial data at our fingertips.Nontraditional sources like OpenStreetMap, social media activity, and satellite imagery provide up-to-date, granular data that can be powerful predictors of property value.Grabbing data from the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore’s open listing of apartment and condominium sales over the last four years, we compiled a dataset showing the locations and unit price per square foot for over 50,000 transactions.

5G phone prices are about to get a lot cheaper.Next year, Qualcomm will expand its 5G modems across its Snapdragon 8 series, 7 series and 6 series processors, the company said Friday at the IFA electronics show in Berlin. The company's 8 series chips are aimed at high-end phones like the Galaxy S10, and it's the Snapdragon 855, alongside a Qualcomm 5G modem, that connects the Galaxy S10 5G, Note 10 Plus 5G and other phones to 5G networks.5G is touted as a game-changing technology, with the ability to dramatically boost the speed and coverage of wireless networks. But the first 5G devices have been expensive. The Galaxy S10 5G costs $1,299, while the regular S10 starts at $900.
The Galaxy Note 10 Plus is a seriously good phone -- we've called it the best phone Samsung has made in years. But the premium Note 10 Plus comes at a cost, with prices starting at $1,100 (£999, AU$1,699).You'll find almost everything you want (except a headphone jack) in Samsung's current flagship phone. While it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the newer phone, the screen still looks great and the cameras perform well.By now you're probably well aware that the headphone jack has disappeared from the Note 10 Plus, so if you are a fan of wired headphones the choice is easy: the Note 9.(Note: you can also remap the Bixby button on the Note 9.)

We've seen plenty of AirPods deals of late, but Apple's "other" true-wireless earbuds, the Beats Powerbeats Pro, rarely dip below their $250 list price. But just in time for Labor Day, here's the best sale we've seen yet: For a limited time, and while supplies last, Daily Steals (via Google Express) has the Beats Powerbeats Pro for $199.98 with promo code 19LABOR12.Note that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of the products featured on this page. The Powerbeats Pro are designed with athletic users in mind, relying on over-the-ear hooks and noise-isolating rubber ear tips. Those hooks make it all but impossible for the 'buds to come loose, even during the bounciest of exercises.Meanwhile, that noise-isolating design helps give the Powerbeats an audio-quality advantage over AirPods: "Richer, cleaner sound with bass that's not only much bigger but tighter," according to David Carnoy's Powerbeats Pro review.
Not one, not two, but three Save dialogs in updated Office 365 desktop applicationsIn an effort to help users "save files to the cloud more easily," Microsoft has added an additional save dialog to desktop Office 365 applications, including Word, Excel and Powerpoint. The new "save experience" was announced in January but will be rolling out to all customers in September as part of the semi-annual release of Office. But this was not good enough for the Office team and in Office 2010, Microsoft introduced the Backstage as a document management feature.Hit Save As, or hit Save in a document that has never been saved before, and you enter the Backstage. This has the concept of Places, and if you are lucky you can select a place, such as your Documents folder, type in a name, change the file type if needed, and hit Save, the Save function being represented by a floppy disk icon, apparently something that was needed for document storage in computing pre-history.
We’re used to microchips becoming increasingly miniaturized, thanks to the amazing trend of Moore’s Law letting engineers pack more and more transistors onto ever tinier chips. The 46,225 square millimeter WSE chip boasts an enormous 1.2 trillion transistors, 400,000 cores, and 18 gigabytes of on-chip memory. The previous record-holder was a mere 815 square millimeters, with 21.1 billion transistors. As CEO and co-founder Andrew Feldman told Digital Trends, this means the WSE chip is “56.7 times larger” than the giant chip it beat for the title.“Artificial intelligence work is one of the fastest-growing compute workloads,” Feldman said.“Between 2013 and 2018, it grew at a rate of more than 300,000 times.
India has further liberalized its foreign direct investment (FDI) rules for many sectors, opening new avenues for global investors and giants such as Apple as Asia’s third-largest economy attempts to jump-start its years-low economic growth. As part of the new proposal, which has been approved, the government said single-brand retail companies will be allowed to open online stores before they set up presence in the bricks-and-mortar market. This would allow Apple, which has yet to set up retail stores in the country, to start selling a range of products through its own online store.Currently, Apple sells its products in India through partnered third-party offline retailers and e-commerce platforms such as Amazon India, Flipkart and Paytm Mall.Over the years, Apple has requested the government numerous times to relax the local foreign direct investment (FDI) rules.Company executives have long expressed disappointment at Amazon India, Flipkart and Paytm Mall for offering heavy discounts on the iPhone and MacBook Air to boost their respective GMV metrics.
Pluto was considered a planet through the early 90s, but then scientists discovered Eris, Pluto's twin, along with other nearby objects. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union decided to reclassify Pluto as a dwarf planet, to the fury and confusion of the American public.Thierry Montmerle: People were so angry that they said that all the astronomers should be put on the wall and shot at.And today, over 12 years later, people still have strong opinions whenever you ask: Should Pluto be a planet again? He leads NASA's New Horizons mission, which flew by Pluto in 2015.Alan Stern: And in planetary science, where the experts in planets are, we call small planets "planets."

Digital asset exchange Binance is launching a cryptocurrency lending platform later this month. In a blog post published earlier today, the exchange announced what it’s calling “Binance Lending.” A platform which Binance CEO, Chanpeng Zhao, touted would let users “earn crypto in their sleep.”Binance is positioning the platform as a “value-add” service for exchange users that hold idle digital assets. In other words, if you have some tokens or coins on Binance that you’re just letting sit there, you could make some money by offering them for use in Binance‘s lending platform.Users that lend out their dormant coins will earn interest over a two-week period. In the case of Binance‘s own coin, BNB, users could earn an annualized interest rate of up to 15 percent.

It's as if Steph Curry didn't make 300 three-pointers in a single season and somehow the Golden State Warriors still got to the playoffs.Apple Pencil Mini for iPhoneOn Aug. 7, Samsung launched the absolutely stunning Galaxy Note 10 and 10 Plus.Though I have fond memories of using a stylus on the resistive touch display of my Palm Treo 680, as soon as I tried that screen on the original iPhone, I was immediately hooked on the fact that my finger became, to quote Steve Jobs, "the best pointing device in the world."Whenever you don't have a solid hold on the phone or want to change the volume, you risk dropping the device.Google took a similar approach with the Pixel 3 and I've never had issues on it.
Smoking isn’t good for you.But e-cigarettes, with their sleek, USB bodies and mango-flavored cartridges, promised a sweeter, safer future.Last week, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced it is opening an investigation into the health effects of smoking e-cigarettes after nearly 100 teenagers in 14 states reported lung illnesses related to vaping. The cases, which were primarily reported among teenagers and young adults, were so severe that some patients were hospitalized and put on ventilators. In it, researchers show that inhaling e-cigarette vapor—just the vapor, without any nicotine or flavorings—has an immediate, negative impact on the vascular system. But e-cigarettes contain more than nicotine, and the bulk of research so far has largely overlooked how these other ingredients affect users.

A plant-based patty that might convincingly pass as meat?As recently as a year ago, when most of us still thought of “veggie burgers” as flat discs made from mushrooms or black beans, such a creation still felt like near-future science fiction. But this has been a sizzling summer in the plant-based protein world, with leading faux-meat brands securing big deals almost weekly, sparking media coverage and international discussion of the trend along the way.And the stakes are beefy: Billions of dollars of brand value are being built behind the scenes by the key architects of this movement, fueled by product innovation, strategic brand partnerships and growing consumer demand. Most recently, Impossible Foods and Burger King announced the national rollout of the Impossible Whopper, adding 7,000-plus outlets to the roughly 10,000 restaurants already serving the brand’s meat substitute (White Castle, Red Robin and Cheesecake Factory among them). The nationwide expansion, following a successful test and a manufacturing deal to reverse shortages and scale production, gives Impossible some valuable, high-profile exposure as it readies its first foray into supermarkets this fall.
