- November 7, 2019 - A research team led by professors at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) will use data analytics and optimization to determine the most efficient use of shelters and services for homeless youths in New York City.Their goal is to disrupt the "supply side" of human trafficking networks by reducing the vulnerability of those most at risk of exploitation.Andrew Trapp, also associate professor, is a co-principal investigator on the project. The study will build on previous research led by Konrad using analytics to develop tools to understand and address human trafficking networks."To disrupt human trafficking, we need to look at the beginning of the supply chain--at-risk homeless youths," Konrad said. The office of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, the mayor's Youth Homelessness Task Force, and the Coalition for the Homeless have committed to support the project.
It’s dark and I’m parked in an alley near a lopsided compost bin.I am trying to track their movements, to understand how far they go and how often. There are too many and they move in places where I can’t follow. As someone who has trapped more than 700 rats, I can tell you that this lack of information is partly because rats are notoriously difficult to study. For other wildlife species, you can track movement by trapping an animal, tagging it with something like a numbered ear tag, recapturing that animal later on and then measuring the distance between traps. To get around issues of trappability, researchers can use GPS technologies.

NASA astronomers were using the Hubble Space Telescope to look deep into space, and with it, they found a pair of galaxies that are colliding and look a bit like a face with two glowing eyes staring back at them. The scientists say the image shows a head-on collision between two galaxies. Each of the eyes in the image are bright galaxy cores that have crashed into each other. The outline of the face is a ring of young, blue stars.Additional clumps of stars form the nose and mouth in the image. The system is cataloged as Arp-Madore 2026-424.
In a move to boost family subscriptions to its app, Spotify this morning announced the launch of a dedicated Kids application which allows children three and up to listen to their own music, both online and offline, as well as explore playlists and recommendations picked by experts, and more. The music selection is also filtered so songs won’t have explicit content. But Spotify believes children deserve their own space, where the music they listen to is available in an ad-free environment, where they won’t accidentally encounter lyrics that parents disapprove of, and where content is hand-curated by editors.Spotify Kids, essentially, is a set of hand-picked playlists across categories.), genres, seasonal, Spotify Originals, artist/groups and Stories. These playlists are all programmed by human editors, not algorithms, who follow a set of guidelines about what’s appropriate for children.

Remember that epic Equifax hack from 2017?As it turns out, the company made it pretty easy for hackers to get in.A recent filing in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division points out a few of the company’s missteps that might have led to the breach. The first of those issues comes in the form of the password the company users to protect a portal used to manage credit disputes. While you might think a major company holding personal information like people’s names, addresses, and social security numbers might use an exceptionally secure password in that instance, it actually went for something a different: It used “admin” as both the username and password for the portal. Not exactly the most secure move.

New assistive technology can diagnose collapsed lungs from chest x-rays with a higher degree of accuracy than radiologists. The system, developed at the University of Waterloo, uses artificial intelligence (AI) software to search a huge database of x-ray images with known diagnoses for comparison to x-rays of new patients with unknown conditions. That approach enables researchers to identify 75 per cent of cases of collapsed lungs, or pneumothorax."Our results are very exciting," said Antonio Sze-To, a postdoctoral fellow at Waterloo."The AI we use works almost like magic - and it will help radiologists save lives."Pneumothorax occurs when air gets between the chest wall and the outside of a lung, causing pain and symptoms such as shortness of breath.

Everyone enjoys blasting their vehicle's heater on cold days, but the 2019 Ford Ranger's HVAC system might get too warm for comfort.Ford said on Monday that it will recall 17,965 Ranger pickup trucks for a possible fire risk related to the HVAC system. In affected trucks, there may not be enough clearance between the electrical terminal and the conductive-base plate slot, Ford said.Without proper clearance, there's an increased risk for an electrical short, which may lead to the blower motor overheating, smoking and, in the worst cases, catching fire. The automaker said it's not aware of any injuries related to the problem, but one Ranger owner has filed a warranty claim over the pickup truck reportedly smoking while driving.Ford said this issue may be related to the new recall.
Germany‘s new ‘security catalog’ — which is expected to be released later this week — will not exclude Huawei from supplying equipment for the country’s 5G mobile networks, Reuters reports. The US blacklisted Huawei back in May over its alleged ties with the Chinese government and imposed export sanctions on the company’s products. The US then pressured Germany to do they same by excluding Huawei from an auction on providing the country with gear for its 5G infrastructure — but the new security rule book shows Germany has no intention on caving.“Germany’s approach did not and does not foresee any clause that would exclude any one company,” a senior government official told Reuters, under anonymity. This confirms Angela Merkel’s stance from earlier this year where she said Germany wouldn’t single out individual vendors while toughening the security of the country’s mobile networks. The new security catalog will detail higher technical and security standards which operators would need to adhere to.
