After years of struggling to escape the clutches of development hell, a live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman looks like it’s finally becoming a reality, thanks to a surprising (though not all that unexpected) partnership between Netflix and Warner Bros. The Hollywood Reporter writes that Netflix has greenlit a live-action Sandman series based on the critically-acclaimed Vertigo comic that follows the travels of Morpheus (or Dream of the Endless), an anthropomorphic being who manipulates dreams and reality.Wonder Woman screenwriter Allan Heinberg is attached to showrun with Gaiman and David S. Goyer acting as executive producers.According to THR, multiple studios (including HBO) were presented with the chance to claim Sandman, which is said to be a particularly expensive production, before Netflix emerged as the frontrunner.THR writes, “Sources familiar with the pact note it is the most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done.”While there’s no news about casting or which aspects of the Sandman mythos the series might get into just yet, the deal itself says interesting things about the show because of the parties involved.
While much of the attention in the world of automation technology has been focused on self-driving cars, many other markets traditionally dominated by human-in-the-loop solutions are reaching a point of inflection, enabling RaaS solutions to take over.Giant companies with ominous, global, megacorp-sounding names like FANUC and ABB provide solutions that require hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of investment dollars just to get started.Companies buy massive robots and software solutions that are customized — at great cost — to their specific needs. The massive conglomerates that sell these robots have dominated the field for decades, but that is about to change. At the same time, cheap and powerful computing and cloud infrastructure are now also readily available and easy to spin up.A market has hit its automation tipping point (ATP) when an RaaS solution is introduced with a unit cost that is less than or equal to the unit cost for humans-in-the-loop to conduct the same task.
It all began with a tragic accident, and then another one, and then briserade flygskandalen.the Us giant Boeing model 737 Max 8's were defective, and the european civil aviation authorities, the EASA stopped all the flights. Then it was more of a ban, and the majority of the airlines in the reefs of the orders of the new plane, and demanded compensation for being forced to set up a flight.the plan of the opposition is becoming as well known as standing on the ground.from around the world are about 500 of the 737 Max 8 in.the Plan is to take up an awful lot of space.
I mainly asked questions and I got some great answers in my email. The big question is whether Niantic can strike gold twice; here’s an Extra Crunch interview my colleague Greg did with the startup’s CEO.Twitter turned comments into the main 140 character dish, but Twitter’s influence is getting baked into a ton of platforms.Sites like Instagram are starting to gain a greater understanding of how users want responses to complement their content and the opportunities they’ve seized on really showcase the user-submitted opportunities being wasted by platforms like YouTube and Twitch.YouTube downgrading their comment visibility kind of highlights what a cesspool the company has allowed them to turn into, but rather than being a place where people are vile, the platform just hasn’t grown them into something useful or exciting over the past decade. As Instagram continues to become a place where more and more famous users interact with each other, the comment fields are becoming the place where users “bond” with the accounts they follow even if they’re still lurking around and reading how the account responds to other high-profile users.

Nvidia and Volvo Group announced a plan to collaborate on self-driving trucks in multiple commercial truck industries.Speaking at Volvo Group’s Gothenburg, Sweden headquarters on a press call, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the deal will help transform the multi-hundred-billion-dollar commercial truck industry and improve safety for construction workers. The companies did not share financial details of the announcement.Lars Stenqvist, Volvo Group chief technology officer, said on the call that his company has been using its own self-driving technology at a mine in Norway, but to take the experiment onto public roads, Volvo will need to use Nvidia’s artificial intelligence and self-driving car technology.(I wrote recently how Volvo is working with Varjo on augmented reality and virtual reality technologies to improve driver safety.)Volvo Group is a $40 billion company with 100,000 employees and 12 brands for trucks, including Mack trucks.
The wreck of a ship that claimed 14 lives when it sank in a devastating storm off the coast of Australia nearly 102 years ago has been discovered.Nyora, a large steam tug, was towing ‘Astoria,’ an American 4-masted motor sailing ship, when she sank 31 miles off the coast of Cape Jaffa, South Australia, according to YouTube channel ScubaCrave (OzDiverDown), which posted the footage.“Heavy seas smashed in the engine room door and the tug started to sink stern first,” ScubaCrave wrote in a description.9 News reports that the discovery was made by diver Steve Saville after years of research.MYSTERIOUS 19TH-CENTURY SHIPWRECK DISCOVERED BY ACCIDENT IN THE GULF OF MEXICOThe tug sank on July 9, 1917, and only two crew members survived the sinking.
The stylus is one of the understated input devices of modern times.Ridiculed by the late Steve Jobs, it has now become the star of Apple’s new iPad Pro vision.Still, there only so many things you could cram inside a small stick.Wacom put buttons, Apple places a touch sensor, and Samsung added a Bluetooth transmitter.Microsoft’s latest patent, however, definitely takes the cake by envisioning how its future Surface Pen could have not just buttons or radios but a while touch screen panel on its side.Granted, we’ve actually seen far worse ideas and, at least on paper, Microsoft’s patent almost makes sense.
The lock on your iPhone stops you accidentally activating or changing anything, and if your Apple Watch isn’t passcode-protected then unlocking it is just a matter of tapping the screen or raising your wrist. That’s because passcode protection is a security feature, and you don’t want anyone else to override it.But you don’t have to enter your passcode every time you want to tell the time. Why should you lock your Apple Watch with a passcode? The short answer is Apple Pay: you don’t want anybody with access to your Watch to be able to spend money without your permission. That’s why Apple asks you to choose a passcode when you first set up your new Watch; no passcode, no Apple Pay.

You use it to share iCloud Drive files, sync contacts, devices and other personal data, to access a range of Apple’s services and to access key apps like Photos and Mail. You can also make use of limited collaboration and sharing features.Ever since it opened the iTunes Store to Windows users, Apple has shown that it understands that many of its customers use multiple platforms, an iPhone and a Windows PC, for example. It is also why the company has worked to make iCloud services cross-platform.In line with this recognition that its platforms exist in a heterogenous computer world, Apple now offers the iCloud for Windows app for free download from Microsoft’s App Stores.Take this online course and learn how to install and configure Windows 10 with the options you need. ]
Update, June 11, 2019 (6:15 pm ET): Shortly after the initial rumor was published, XDA-Developers shared information about a gesture-based feature they have been tracking in the Android Q betas.According to the publication, the new gestures are called “Skip” and “Silence” and would rely on a device including an “Aware” sensor.XDA-Developers notes that the strings of code for Aware are just placeholders and incomplete. With the rumor of Project Soli potentially being added to the Pixel 4 or even updated Nest smart speakers, these media control gestures make a lot of sense.Original article, June 11, 2019 (5:19 pm ET): Just hours after we reported on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL’s potential camera systems, a new rumor has sprung surrounding the two handsets.According to 9to5Google, Google could be including hand gesture tracking technology to its upcoming smartphones.
AMD closed its Computex announcements with a "one last thing" reveal of a 12-core CPU, the Ryzen 7 3900X; just a few weeks later at its E3 press conference AMD one-last-thinged us and one-upped itself with a 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X desktop CPU slated to ship in September for $749.The company also delivered the promised pricing, specifications and availability for its RX 5000-series graphics cards targeted at 1440p gaming and pulled back the curtain and some of the new technologies developers will be using in games like Borderlands 3.In addition to slightly higher clock speeds, the 50th Anniversary Edition card has a gold accented fan shroud with Dr. Lisa Su's signature. On the bundle side, you'll get three months of Xbox Game Pass for PC when you buy one of the cards, including Gears of War 5 when it ships in September.AMD also discussed some of the new technologies it's giving developers access to with a new toolkit that includes FideltyFX, an upscaling technology that performs contrast-adaptive sharpening for improved textures; there will be a Radeon Image Sharpening option in the driver to use with games that don't have it natively supported.Other tech demos showed dynamic vegetation, screenspace reflections and volumetric fog in Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.

Hotstar, India’s largest video streaming service with more than 300 million users, disabled support for Apple’s Safari web browser on Friday to mitigate a security flaw that allowed unauthorized usage of its platform, two sources familiar with the matter told TechCrunch. The incident comes at a time when the streaming service — operated by Star India, part of 20th Century Fox that Disney acquired — enjoys peak attention as millions of people watch the ongoing ICC World Cup cricket tournament on its platform. As users began to complain about not being able to use Hotstar on Safari, the company’s official support account asserted that “technical limitations” on Apple’s part were the bottleneck.“These limitations have been from Safari; there is very little we can do on this,” the account tweeted Friday evening.Sources at Hotstar told TechCrunch that this was not an accurate description of the event.Instead, company’s engineers had identified a security hole that was being exploited by unauthorized users to access Hotstar’s content, they said.
According to a study by Pew Research Center, 53% of Americans agree that made-up news is a big problem for the country—one that the news media is responsible for fixing.Pew surveyed more than 6,000 Americans about various aspects of the impact of fake news: who creates it, what effect it has, and how big of a problem it is.Participants largely believed there to be two big motivations behind creating “made-up news,” including “the desire to push an agenda and to make money.”According to the study, public perception of made-up news substantially depends on factors such as political awareness and party affiliation.Americans with a higher exposure to political content say that they see more made-up news compared to those less politically aware, the latter of whom are more likely to share false material.Younger adults, between the ages of 18 to 29, tend to care less about the causes and effects of made-up news than their elders.

Jeff Bezos demonstrated a pair of remote-controlled robotic hands at Amazon's robotics conference. He was able to perform surprisingly dexterous tasks like stacking cups. When asked if he could solve a Rubik's cube, Bezos said he couldn't do it even with his regular human hands. The robotic hands not only imitate the movements of the person operating them, they also provide haptic feedback, transmitting the feeling of touch.Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.Jeff Bezos took control of a pair of giant, remote-controlled robot hands on Wednesday at Amazon's robotics conference re:MARS in Las Vegas.
During a wide-ranging discussion at Amazon’s re:MARS conference in Las Vegas, Naveen Rao, corporate vice president and general manager of AI at Intel, spoke about machine learning’s rapid progress and the fields it might transform, in addition to the steps he believes must be taken to ensure it’s not abused.Like the iPhone, he said, machine learning — a technique underlying systems from Amazon’s Alexa to Google Lens — wasn’t the first form of AI, but it was nonetheless “exciting” and “consequential.” He characterizes the coming AI revolution as the single largest transition the human species has ever encountered.“Few people anticipated the big-picture changes that smartphones would bring. No one foresaw that smartphones could make our work day substantially longer because we’d never get away from email,” he said.No one thought we’d need to teach kids social skills for face-to-face interactions.”He added: “The intended consequences of AI — the transformational positive impacts to all of humanity — are so vast and profound that we must find ways to ensure an intended future.”

Twitter acquired London-based startup Fabula AI to add to its arsenal in its battle against fake news on its platform.Fabula AI has been developing deep learning machine learning technology to help identify fake news and other online disinformation by analyzing how the content spreads and who is doing the spreading.Twitter chief technology officer Parag Agrawal said in a blog post that the team from Fabula AI will join the social network’s Cortex team of machine learning engineers, data scientists and researchers, which is tasked with advancing machine learning inside and outside of Twitter.Agrawal said the initial focus when the Fabula AI joins Twitter will be on improving the health of the conversation on its platform, with future initiatives to include helping to prevent spam and abuse.Fabula AI was co-founded by Michael Bronstein, Damon Mannion, Federico Monti and Ernesto Schmitt, and it is currently led by chief scientist Bronstein and chief technologist Monti.Agrawal wrote in the blog post, “This strategic investment in graph deep learning research, technology and talent will be a key driver as we work to help people feel safe on Twitter and help them see relevant information.
Indeed, 5G could prove instrumental to augmented reality finally hitting the mainstream.AR, as it’s commonly known as, is the art and science of overlaying virtual information onto a live view of the real world. While virtual reality (VR) creates a completely enclosed, self-contained 3D virtual world that a person can fully immerse themselves in, AR seeks to enhance or indeed augment our perception of the physical environment around us.Augmented reality is already firmly embedded in our culture, from the heads-up displays (HUDs) in a fighter pilot’s cockpit to the live selfie effects of Snapchat and Facebook. The huge amount of data being processed in real time means that modern mobile AR applications are very localized, essentially ‘offline’ affairs. Our current 4G networks simply don’t have the capacity to bear the weight of more connected or shared AR experiences, nor do they have the required low latency – that is, the time between an input and data being sent in response – for real time responsiveness.
Google is said to be the target of a new Justice Department investigation, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. The antitrust division of the Justice Department has put together the basics needed to form an investigation, say sources familiar with the agency’s plans. The move would put the search giant’s business practices under the microscope and could spell trouble for its multitude of business units. In addition to its main search business, Google offers a wide range of products and services, including Gmail, Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Android.Google no stranger to investigationsIn 2013, the Federal Trade Commission concluded a similar probe into Google’s behavior.
In a new leak from 9to5Mac screenshots seem to show off the apparent new styling option, which replaces iOS' traditional white backgrounds with black.Rumored to be a part of iOS 13, the new feature is expected to be introduced when Apple shows off its latest software next week at its annual WWDC developer conference. In addition to looking crisper on the OLED displays found on the iPhone X, XS and XS Max the new mode may also help with those devices' battery lives since OLED displays can keep those pixels off.The new dark mode is shown in the Apple Music app.The screen after taking a screenshot also looks to be getting a slight revamp, according to the leaked images.9to5Mac says the new mode can be enabled in Settings or through Control Center.
Animating the lips and mouths of computer-generated characters to match those of voiceover actors isn’t a walk in the park, even with the aid of vision-based performance capture software like CrazyTalk. It isn’t easy straddling the line between uncanny valley and the overly cartoonish, particularly when the target dialogue’s run length exceeds tens or even hundreds of hours.Fortunately for animators, researchers at Zhejiang University and NetEase’s Fuxi AI Lab have developed an end-to-end machine learning system — Audio2Face — that can generate real-time facial animation from audio alone, taking into account both pitch and speaking style. They describe their work in a newly published paper (“Audio2Face: Generating Speech/Face Animation From Single Audio with Attention-Based Bidirectional LSTM Networks“) on the preprint server Arxiv.org.“Our approach is designed exclusively on the basis of audio track, without any other auxiliary input, such as images, which makes it increasingly challenging as we attempt to regress visual space from vocal sequence,” explained the coathors.“Another challenge is that facial motions involve multifold activations of correlated regions on the geometric surface of [a] face, which makes it difficult to generate lifelike and consistent facial deformations for avatars.”
User reviews are often a good way to get a feel for what your peers think of a movie, game, or TV show, but usually there isn’t any kind of vetting process associated with them. How can you tell that the person leaving an exceedingly low (or exceeding high) rating on a movie actually saw it?Rotten Tomatoes asked the same question, and today, it’s introducing verified audience reviews and ratings.Up until this point, Rotten Tomatoes has allowed users reviews and ratings from everyone, assuming the movie being reviewed has actually been released. It’ll still do that after today’s introduction of verified audience ratings, but now when you visit a page for a movie on Rotten Tomatoes, you’ll see the collective verified audience rating first. You can still see the audience score that takes every user review into account, but it’ll initially be hidden behind a “More Info” tab.
