Intel’s next-gen Comet Lake-S desktop processors have been revealed in a major leak detailing the purported full line-up, and providing info on exactly how fast some of these chips will be.That said, Wccftech seems to have got hold of some Intel slides which are very revealing when it comes to the chip giant’s 10th-gen desktop processors based on a refinement of its 14nm++ process, which will supposedly be headed up by a 10-core (20-thread) as previously rumored. That would be the Intel Core i9-10900 which purportedly runs with a base clock of 3GHz and Turbo to 5.1GHz (that’s presumably single-core boost), and it has 20MB of cache (no clock speed details are provided for the unlocked K version of this chip, by the way). Also, as previously speculated, there is hyper-threading throughout the entire 10th-gen Core desktop family, from the Core i3 upwards. The Core i3-10100 is a quad-core part with eight-threads and a base clock of 3.2GHz with Turbo to 3.8GHz (allegedly – take that as read for everything in this report, of course).Intel’s Core i7-10700 will apparently sport 8-cores and 16-threads with a base clock of 3GHz and Turbo to 4.8GHz.

Climate risk including extreme events and the related pressures our environment are fundamentally affecting the way business and governments operate – both tactically and strategically.Increasing climate volatility is causing food supply disruptions, and increasing pressure on Enterprises (including financial institutions, insurers, producers) to disclose what’s going on.The trouble is, while there is a lot of data about all this, its complexity, incompleteness and sheer volume is too vast for humans to process with the tools available today.Equally, other parts of the world suffer from data scarcity, making it much harder to provide useful and timely analysis.Cervest, has now closed a £3.7m investment round to fund the launch of its real-time, climate forecasting platform.Built on three years of research and development by a team of scientists, mathematicians, developers and engineers, Cervest says its Earth Science AI platform can analyze billions of data points to forecast how changes in the climate will impact the future of entire countries right down to individual landscapes.
DeepMind's artificial intelligence platforms have become legendary for their ability to master complex games like chess, shogi and Go, crushing our puny human brains with advanced machine learning techniques.Earlier this year a new version of the AI built for real-time strategy game StarCraft II, dubbed AlphaStar, was unveiled and carried on DeepMind's tradition of putting humans to shame, trampling some of the top human StarCraft II players in the world. Why would researchers build an AI for a niche video game title and what can it teach us about artificial intelligence and machine learning? There are countless strategies and counter strategies which help human players, at the top levels of play, to win. It's like an incredibly complicated game of rock-paper-scissors.In a game of StarCraft II, players can't see what their opponent is doing like they might in chess or Go.
this is a sustainable town, built on common standards, systems and objects to be shared by all, and the resusrsslöseriet brought to a halt. But one of the major players are not allowed to take over the control of the technical infrastructure, writes Peter Waher, the IEEE, and the Trust Anchor Group.Sweden is at the forefront of sustainability and are ranked by the united nations, the OECD, the country that has made the most progress. However, there is a risk of Sweden building up a technical system failure, as it makes it more difficult to achieve the goals of sustainable development. The time has come to formulate a policy in order to increase the ”samnytta” in the field of technology. As a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the IEEE, the world's largest organisation of technical experts, it is my privilege to be part of the team that is developing a new architecture, a standard for the Internet of Things and Smart Communities.
Samsung is hoping to give SmartThings, its connected home platform, a boost, adding new rules support and coaxing device-makers into adding compatibility.Announced at the Samsung Developer Conference 2019 today, the company’s annual developer event, SmartThings’ new Rules API promises to better link together multiple devices acting on a single command or trigger.Samsung acquired SmartThings back in 2014, and set to work integrating things like Bixby and its range of home appliances into the platform. While there are a handful of SmartThings connected home devices – including security cameras, motion and door sensors, and other IoT gadgets – the platform’s main strategy was in trying to link together third-party devices in a more seamless way.Currently, there are more than 5,000 devices supported in the ecosystem, Samsung said today. That’s more than the roughly 450 devices Apple says are compatible with its HomeKit platform, certainly.
Ofcom has set the window for selling off more bandwidth to network operators.80 MHz is up for grabs in the 700 MHz band, while 120 MHz will be available to bid on in the 3.6-3.8 GHz band. The 700 MHz band provides "good-quality mobile coverage, both indoors and across very wide areas – including the countryside," while the 3.6-3.8 GHz band is “part of the primary band for 5G and are capable of carrying lots of data-hungry connections in concentrated areas."The auction will be separated into two phases; the principal phase will see the companies bid for airwaves on traditional lots to determine how much of the spectrum each wins. The second "assignment" phase bidding will see specific frequencies allocated.Ofcom added that companies bidding in the 3.6-3.8 GHz spectrum can negotiate amongst themselves during the assignment phase.

One proposed method for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere - and reducing the risk of climate change - is to capture carbon from the air or prevent it from getting there in the first place."All sorts of scenarios have been developed under the assumption that carbon capture actually reduces substantial amounts of carbon."Even if you have 100 percent capture from the capture equipment, it is still worse, from a social cost perspective, than replacing a coal or gas plant with a wind farm because carbon capture never reduces air pollution and always has a capture equipment cost.Jacobson, who is also a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, examined public data from a coal with carbon capture electric power plant and a plant that removes carbon from the air directly. In both cases, electricity to run the carbon capture came from natural gas.(Upstream emissions are emissions, including from leaks and combustion, from mining and transporting a fuel such as coal or natural gas.)
Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC is now selling a less-expensive version of its Exodus 1 blockchain-based smartphone with a built-in digital wallet that allows users to store, buy, sell and trade Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The Exodus 1s will initially roll out in Europe, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, with other country sales to be announced later.[ Take this mobile device management course from PluralSight and learn how to secure devices in your company without degrading the user experience. ]Phil Chen, HTC's decentralized chief officer, said the original blockchain phone met the company's sales targets.Full nodes, Chen said, are the most important ingredient in the resilience of a Bitcoin network and HTC has "lowered the barrier to entry for any person to run a node."A full node simply means a mirrored copy of the entire blockchain ledger exists on a user's smart phone.

Multi-national regulatory pushback against Facebook's effort to create a cryptocurrency payment network is slowing the project and causing supporters such as Visa and Mastercard to back away, according to sources familiar with the situation and a published report.Along with the initial announcement of its Libra digital currency and Calibra online digital wallet to store it, Facebook earlier this year released the names of 27 founding companies who signed on to become part of the non-profit Libra Association. The association was formed to help construct and manage the blockchain-based payment network. One person directly familiar with the situation said Facebook's Libra team is "overwhelmed now coping with regulator pushback" and it is slowing innovation and implementation; earlier remarks by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg may have alluded to the same situation.Libra is currently scheduled to go live in 2020.Members of the Libra Association have been asked to attend a meeting in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, according to The Washington Post.
Artificial intelligence (AI) unicorn Sensetime is partnering with communications tower company China Tower to retrofit its 1.9 million sites with video surveillance systems. Why it matters: At a recent trade show, China Tower offered a range of scenarios where the monitoring tech could be useful, including forest fire prevention and curbing illegal farmland construction.A large-scale, AI-powered surveillance network could raise concerns from privacy advocates worried about China’s already massive security apparatus. The partnership provides a boost for Alibaba-backed Sensetime, which is China’s biggest AI startup with a valuation exceeding $7.5 billion.Details: The new system is part of China Tower’s Trans-sector Site Application and Information business (TSSAI).A new subsidiary named Smart Tower that was set up in June will drive the surveillance business, according to a report by communications industry media Light Reading.
On Wednesday, Melinda Gates announced a $1 billion commitment over the next decade to promote gender equality in the United States.Gates, who is co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and founder of the investment firm Pivotal Ventures, penned an op-ed in Time magazine outlining her reasons for making the investment.“I want to see more women in the position to make decisions, control resources, and shape policies and perspectives,” Gates writes.“I believe that women’s potential is worth investing in—and the people and organizations working to improve women’s lives are, too.”According to Gates, Pivotal Ventures will extend resources to “new and established partners” that seek to expand the power and influence of women in the marketplace. It doesn’t have a full plan just yet, but Gates says the organization will have three main priorities: removing barriers to women’s professional advancement; fast-tracking women in sectors like tech, media, and government; and “mobilizing shareholders” into pressuring companies to make reforms in support of gender equality.

The Insider scheme put in an appearance the day after Windows 10 was announced and was aimed at providing users with preview versions of Microsoft's biannually updated operating system in order that customers might check out new features ahead of time.As it transpired, and thanks in part to the work of the Windows Insider programme itself, those experts would eventually be joined by ordinary users as the quality of Windows 10 releases suffered over the years.Four years later, ignoring that feedback led to a disastrous Windows 10 release and the accidental erasing of user data.An early leader of the Insider programme, Gabe Aul, stayed with it for just under two years before handing his beloved big red build release button to fellow Microsoft staffer Dona Sarkar, arriving fresh from a stint on the HoloLens team.As a reminder, the Windows Insider programme consists of four testing rings: a Release Preview Ring, supposedly the current branch and used just before updates head to the wider world; a Slow Ring for more stable preview code; a Fast Ring for more bleeding-edge builds; and finally Skip Ahead, for a glimpse of the version after next.Heck, earlier this year every ring was accidentally hit with next year's Windows 10.
Borrowing a trick from the Air Force, whose planes can complete long-range missions thanks to in-flight refueling from tanker aircraft, researchers at UC Berkeley showed off a novel way to keep small drones in the air almost indefinitely: flying replacement batteries that can be swapped without landing. The use of four propellers not only helps improve the stability of quadcopter drones while hovering in position, it also makes them incredibly manoeuvrable and fast.Adding more batteries adds weight, which requires stronger motors, and eventually you reach the point where the length of drone flights reaches a limit and fresh batteries are needed. But for other drone applications, like long-range reconnaissance missions or delivering parcels across a large city, having to land to recharge or grab a new battery can add unwanted complications and time delays.Seeking a different solution, researchers at UC Berkeley’s HiPeR Lab (High Performance Robotics Lab) came up with replacement batteries that can not only fly, but also connect to larger drones mid-flight.To streamline the battery swapping process, which usually requires a cable to be unplugged and plugged back in, the researchers created a quadcopter with a landing pad featuring electrical contact pads on top.
NASA's Terra satellite captured an image of Typhoon Mitag's cloud-filled eye, located east of Taiwan. On Sept. 30, the Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument that flies aboard NASA's Terra satellite provided a visible image of Mitag. The MODIS image showed the cyclone continues to produce strong thunderstorms around its cloud-filled eye.Mitag's western quadrant had already spread clouds and precipitation over Taiwan.Powerful bands of thunderstorms were swirling into the low-level center from the eastern side of the storm. On Sept. 30, warnings remain in effect for the Philippines as Mitag, known locally as Onyok, continues to move north and away from the country.
It’s been quite some time since we last saw Nintendo release a new Brain Age game, but it looks like that’s going to change by the end of the year.Nintendo has announced a new Brain Age title for the Nintendo Switch, and though it’s only confirmed for Japan at the moment, we imagine it’ll eventually be coming to North American and European shores as well. It’s been seven years since Brain Age: Concentration Training, the last mainline Brain Age game, was released for the Nintendo DS, so we’re overdue for a new entry in the series.Nintendo of Japan has already published some videos previewing the game, which go through some of Brain Age‘s features. In addition to the standard puzzles you’d expect out of a Brain Age title, this game also uses some of the Switch’s unique functionality. For instance, it uses the Joy-Con’s IR blaster to read the shape of your hand for games of rock-paper-scissors and for addition exercises known as “finger calculation.” As with many Nintendo Switch games, you’ll be able to hand over one of the Joy-Cons to a friend for local multiplayer too.
It may be the Pixel 4’s time on stage in two weeks’ time but it will be sharing the attention with Chromebooks. In addition to Google’s own Pixelbook 2, there might be a few new Chrome OS laptops coming around that time as well.Perhaps trying to beat the rush or trying to go under the radar, two new Samsung Chromebooks have popped up.And while the Samsung Chromebook 4+ is notable for embracing a new larger size, it seems to have just put a giant body on a middling soul.Given how the market flows and how Samsung goes, you wouldn’t think that the Korean OEM would give Chromebooks a good run.And yet if this latest leak is true, this would be the fourth, even fifth, generation of Chromebooks carrying its name.
The legendary Viking warriors known as berserkers were renowned for their ferocity in battle, purportedly fighting in a trancelike state of blind rage (berserkergang), howling like wild animals, biting their shields, and often unable to distinguish between friend and foe in the heat of battle. But historians know very little about the berserkers apart from scattered Old Norse myths and epic sagas. Now an ethnobotanist is challenging that hypothesis, suggesting in a recent paper in The Journal of Ethnopharmacology that henbane is a more likely candidate.Accounts of the berserkers date back to a late ninth-century poem to honor King Harald Fairhair. The onset of berserkergang purportedly began with bodily chills, shivering, and teeth chattering, followed by swelling and reddening of the face.Several hypotheses have been proposed for why the warriors would have behaved this way, including self-induced hysteria—aided by biting their shields and howling—epilepsy, ergot poisoning, or mental illness.
These days, you don’t need a cable television subscription or even an antenna to watch some of the best shows on TV.Fresh off its first season, the series has earned heaps of praise for its commentary on current sociopolitical issues and the psychological trauma veterans endure long after they leave the battlefield.Martin’s fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire concluded its eight-season run with a controversial (to put it mildly) final arc.The series has received 23 nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards over its first four seasons, but has yet to take a trophy home.Jason Bateman plays a financial advisor who moves his family from Chicago to the remote Missouri Ozarks region after getting involved in a drug kingpin’s money-laundering scheme in this critically praised drama. This FX drama chronicles the rise of ballroom culture among the African American and Latino LGBTQ and gender-nonconforming community in New York City during the 1980s.
