It would have been fairly easy for Roku to bring basic remote control functionality from its iPhone app to the Apple Watch, much as Apple did with its own minimalist Remote app years ago.Instead, the media streaming device maker today announced a surprisingly robust new remote control alternative for Apple’s wearable, effectively redefining what you can do from your wrist.Bundled with version 6.1.3 of the Roku app for iPhones, the company’s Apple Watch app adds four core features, half of which are compatible with a wide number of Roku devices and TVs.The most basic of the features is a conventional directional pad and button-style remote control, as shown above, enabling users to navigate the menus and play or pause streaming content.Impressively, Roku adds to that a Channels launcher, automatically using data from each TV to provide a list of your current inputs and channels. They’re presented as wide, easy-to-press buttons with your customized names and icons, all organized with the most recently selected channels first.

The most well-known photo editor is no longer chained to a desktop. On Monday, November 4, Adobe launched Photoshop for iPad, along with a list of updates to make the traditional Photoshop a bit less traditional, including a new Object Selection tool and updates to the interface. While the goal is to eventually bring the same tools available for desktop to the iPad, as Adobe said last year, the first release of the iPad app is lighter than the robust desktop editor.Adobe says the first version focuses on composting, basic retouching, masking and the most commonly used Photoshop processes. While the iPad version doesn’t have all the bells and whistles yet, Photoshop for iPad is built on the same code base as the original Photoshop, unlike Adobe’s previous Photoshop-inspired mobile apps like Photoshop Fix.The iPad app will autosave the PSD documents with a new Cloud documents expansion, allowing users to move from iPad to desktop without manually transferring files.
Just because technologies are becoming standard equipment across the industry at all kinds of price points doesn't mean that all the manufacturers' application of it is equal. An excellent example of this is with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety decided recently that it wanted to investigate the efficacy of the different pedestrian detection systems on the market, so it rounded up 16 midsize cars from a bunch of different manufacturers and at several price points to see how they'd stack up and it published the results of its study on Tuesday. The results of the tests were divided up into four categories: Superior, Advanced, Basic and No Credit.Out of all the cars tested, six were able to snag themselves a superior rating, and the list of those reads pretty much as you'd expect with Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo unsurprisingly making the cut.The two other brands that made the cut for a superior rating were Nissan and Subaru, proving that you don't necessarily have to spend a boatload of cash to get effective safety tech.
Facebook added female-gendered terms to its hate speech policy in July as part of its ongoing effort to keep women safe on its platform. The social network said in a Newsroom post that it consulted with experts including anthropological and cognitive linguists, women’s rights organizations and safety organizations before revising its rules on targeting cursing, or profanity used to attack a private individual. The new rules apply across Facebook and Instagram, but the company recognized that cultural norms vary around topics such as sexuality in different parts of the world.Vice president of global policy management Monika Bickert wrote in the Newsroom post, “The general themes when it comes to women’s safety tend to be the same around the world, but we find that when we look at specific countries or regions, the actual types of behavior are very localized.”Facebook shared examples of harassers trying to humiliate women by sharing images that would be shameful in their communities, saying that this might mean nude photos or videos of those women engaging in sexual activities in the U.S., while in other countries, it could be something like a photo of a woman’s ankle, or of a woman walking with a man who is not a family member. The social network said in the Newsroom post, “To account for this wide spectrum of harassment types, our rules need to be thoughtful and similarly comprehensive … We take a comprehensive approach to making our platform a safer place for women, including writing clear policies and developing cutting-edge technology to help prevent abuse from happening in the first place.”
Adobe has been granted a licence by the US government, that will allow it to continue providing its online software to users in Venezuela.Earlier this month Adobe had published a support document that said the company would be deactivating all accounts in Venezuela starting 28 October, due to US Government’s Executive Order 13884 issued on 5 August 2019.That executive order by US President Donald Trump effectively halted all US trade with the country, in a measure to increase pressure of President Nicolás Maduro and convince him to step down. But now Adobe has revealed in a blog post an “exciting update”, in that it can now continue to provide services to users in that country.“After discussions with the US government, we’ve been granted a license to provide all of our Digital Media products and services in Venezuela,” blogged Adobe’s Chris Hall.“With this update, we’re sharing that users can continue to access the Creative Cloud and Document Cloud portfolio, and all of their content, as they did before.

It truly is the year of the vegan, with Subway getting on in the action here in the UK and rolling out its vegan meatball sub.The sandwich is being trialled this week at select stores in Birmingham and Manchester, although exact locations are unknown, so you'll have to scope out your local branch to see if it's one of the chosen few.The sub is expected to roll out proper early next year. The vegan meatballs have been available in the US since this summer, although they were served with regular cheese so if customers wanted the sub to actually be vegan, they'd have to opt for no cheese as there was no vegan alternative. Here in the UK, it's presumably the same state of affairs, but details of the trial are few and far between so if they've magicked up some of that horrendous vegan cheese at your local Subway, by all means, let us know."We are currently trialling an exciting new vegan product, our Meatless Meatball Marinara, in a number of stores across the UK," said a Subway spokesperson.
Crocodylians are the 27 species of crocodiles, alligators, caimans and gharials that live all over Earth today, except for in Europe and Antarctica. There are some smaller species, but these top predators are usually big, at least 2 meters long. They also share a general shape and look – for instance, how easily can you tell an alligator and a crocodile apart? The fossil record of crocodylians is much richer, though, with many different forms and body sizes and extraordinary ecological diversity. But exactly which environmental factors might have influenced the body sizes of crocs throughout their evolution? The oldest crocs, alive during the Triassic Period, were small, rarely more than 1 meter long.

The main worries surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) and its future is how one day, it’ll prove to be the biggest job-killing technology of all-time, or worse even, the autonomous bots will group together and wipe out the human race completely. We’re still waiting for hard evidence on how this might happen, but meanwhile in China, a study found that 88 percent of workers have more trust in robots than their human managers. The study, which was published on Tuesday by the US software company Oracle and the research firm Future Workplace, polled 8,370 employees, managers, and human resources workers in 10 countries from July to August of this year. Its findings revealed that China’s trust level of robots in the workplace is well above the global average, with about two thirds of workers admitting they feel optimistic about having a robot co-worker.“Over the past two years, we’ve found that workers have become more optimistic as they’ve adopted more AI in the workplace,” Dan Schawbel, Research Director at Future Workplace said in a statement.“This study shows that AI is redefining not only the relationship between worker and manager, but also the role of a manager in an AI-driven workplace.

At long last: Microsoft has announced its long-rumored dual-screen device.Say hello to the Surface Neo.It won’t arrive until the holiday season of 2020, but it could be the one to define an emerging category of mobile devices. The device is about the size of a large tablet when open, but folds into a compact size – about the size of a notebook – that can easily fit into a bag.It features a 360-degree hinge that allows it to be used either as a large tablet, for running two apps at once, or a slim device when one-handed use and comfort is a priority. Moreover, a slim detachable keyboard allows it to turn into something akin to proper laptop.
This weekend at TwitchCon 2019, Digital Trends video producer Riley Winn took to the showroom floor to try out some gaming supplements. From G Fuel to Respawn, these drinks often promise players improved performance while gaming. You’ll often see video game streamers or e-sports players who are sponsored by one of these gaming-supplement brands drinking or taking them during long streams or at competitions — but do they actually work?Well, we don’t actually know if they do, and honestly, they’re really just energy supplements marketed to gamers. But Winn did try a lot of them out, and the results are pretty on par with what you’d expect: Some were good while others weren’t so good.Winn ended up sweaty, jittery, and felt like he was going to puke.
The IAB Tech Lab is proposing technical standards it hopes will ready its members for the fast-approaching California Consumer Privacy Act, or CCPA, legislation geared toward shining a light on data brokerage and giving consumers more control over how ad tech accesses data. The trade org has established a working group to prepare for the enactment of CCPA in January. The legislation will place stringent limitations on how publishers can grant third parties access to the consumer data of California residents for the purpose of ad targeting. The CCPA also requires that consumers can opt out of allowing such businesses to sell their information to third parties, which is the cornerstone of programmatic media trading.Other trade orgs have attempted to ready their membership for the CCPA but now, as the California governor and attorney general prepare for the CCPA to go into effect, the IAB affiliate is making its own wide-ranging recommendations. The proposals, which the organization will soon make available for public comment, will also contain guidance on how publishers can give explicit notice to website visitors on how their data is tracked, used and shared with third parties, and how they can opt.

Although Windows ships with its own full volume encryption tool called BitLocker, SSDs that claimed to offer their own hardware-based encryption were trusted by the tool and left alone. Now though, after a recent update to Windows 10, Microsoft will assume that connected SSDs don't actually encrypt anything. In a Twitter post, SwiftOnSecurity described why the software giant has decided to no longer trust SSD manufacturers, saying:“Microsoft gives up on SSD manufacturers: Windows will no longer trust drives that say they can encrypt themselves, BitLocker will default to CPU-accelerated AES encryption instead. This is after an exposé on broad issues with firmware-powered encryption.A report released in November of 2018 revealed that self-encrypting drives have a number of security flaws including the use of master passwords set by manufacturers.

Google will soon no longer automatically store requests submitted to its assistant. This summer, the giants Google, Amazon and Apple had to admit that some voice commands submitted to their assistants are recorded and transcribed by human operators.According to these firms, the employees listen to only a tiny part of the recordings. And the process aims only to improve the service by verifying that the command is correctly understood. The explanations put forward did not of course convince, and in the face of the complaints of their users, they jointly announced that they temporarily suspended the transcription, and the analysis of voice commands.Google wants more transparency and more explicit options
