As the debate rages on whether Pluto, currently a dwarf planet, should be given back its planet status, it may soon be joined by an asteroid that could wind up being the smallest dwarf planet in the solar system.Asteroid Hygiea, the fourth largest space rock in the Asteroid Belt, was observed for the first time by astronomers in high-resolution.It's spherical in shape and may wind up taking the crown for the smallest dwarf from Ceres, also located in the Asteroid Belt.“Thanks to the unique capability of the SPHERE instrument on the [Very Large Telescope], which is one of the most powerful imaging systems in the world, we could resolve Hygiea’s shape, which turns out to be nearly spherical,” said the study's lead author, Pierre Vernazza, in a statement.“Thanks to these images, Hygiea may be reclassified as a dwarf planet, so far the smallest in the Solar System.”"By comparing Hygiea’s sphericity with that of other Solar System objects, it appears that Hygiea is nearly as spherical as Ceres, opening up the possibility for this object to be reclassified as a dwarf planet," the study's abstract states.

Leap Motion suggested years ago that it was working to bring real-time hand tracking to mobile devices — an innovation with obvious applications for virtual and augmented reality headsets, which it and Facebook’s Oculus unit subsequently have worked to commercialize.Now a group of Brown University researchers is showing off a different spin on the same hand-tracking technology, applying it to the more popular medium of smartphone AR.As of today, Brown HCI’s Portal-ble concept is somewhat rough around the edges, with a goal of enabling a hand-held smartphone to detect the user’s other hand for interactions with digital objects.Rather than using a smartphone with an integrated rear time-of-flight camera, the researchers paired an Android smartphone with a Leap Motion sensor and a battery-powered Intel Compute Stick to achieve their results; the PC provides the necessary computing horsepower to power the hand tracking.On a positive note, the researchers were able to create viable AR usage paradigms for Portal-ble, including digital objects that users could manipulate with a free hand and place within real-world spaces — while looking at the smartphone screen.The Leap Motion sensor works quickly and accurately enough to enable a hand to select between multiple items, while the system supports both translucent, boxy hand representations and occlusion of a more realistic hand model.
NASA astronauts Christina H Koch and Jessica Meir will make history this morning, as they take part in the first ever spacewalk in the agency’s history featuring only women.The two astronauts will be venturing outside of the International Space Station in order to effect a repair on a failed power controller for the station, with coverage beginning at 6:30 AM ET (3:30 AM PT) via the livestream above, and Koch and Meir set to leave the station’s airlock at 7:50 AM ET (4:50 AM PT).This historic event is happening seven months after its original intended target date, after that attempt had to be scrubbed because the ISS was missing a medium-sized spacesuit that one of the two woman would need.Astronaut Anne McClain was going to take part alongside Koch at that time, but McClain’s time on the station ended in June.McClain attempted to make a large-sized suit work, but her mobility was too limited.NASA sent up a second medium spacesuit in October to ensure that they wouldn’t encounter a similar problem a second time around, but rightly faced criticism for the apparent discrimination of having enough suits to ensure multiple men could spacewalk, but not multiple women.

Last month Apple launched the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.They're great phones but, starting at between $699 and $1,099, one thing they ain't is cheap.But according to noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF Securities, Apple will soon be releasing a more affordable option in the iPhone SE 2.Kuo previously predicted the SE 2 would come in early 2020, and now expects it to launch for $399.That would make sense, since the original iPhone SE launched in 2016 for $399 (£359, AU$679).That phone was essentially an iPhone 5S with some updated specs.
Meet Foodvisor, a startup that has built a mobile app that helps you log everything you eat in order to lose weight, follow a diet or get healthier.You can add data by capturing a photo of your plate before you eat.“We’ve spent a little over two years doing research and development before we launched the app in 2018 in France,” co-founder and CMO Aurore Tran told me.Foodvisor has raised $1.5 million so far (€1.4 million).The company is using deep learning to enable image recognition and detect what you’re about to eat.In addition to identifying the type of food, the app tries to estimate the weight of each item.

Earlier this week, we found out that Google has a new plan when it comes to Android 10 navigation gestures.That plan is to force OEMs to bury their own navigation gestures deep in Android settings and keep Google’s options front-and-center.This means users will only have two apparent options for navigation when they first boot up a new smartphone: the traditional three-button system we’ve known for years and the new system with a slim horizontal line at the bottom of the display that relies completely on swiping gestures.Let’s go over them now so you can get a handle on why Google’s move is a bit heavy-handed.But it’s undeniable that Google’s latest attempt at gesture navigation controls not only functions incredibly similarly to iOS but even looks like iOS.Check out the image below to see what I mean:
Flashes lit up the sky over Chile last week, some even causing fires on the ground—but a new report has found that the origin of these fireballs is a mystery.The Chilean National Geology and Mining Service released a report last weekend, the result of analysis from visiting seven of the charred sites where the objects touched down in the town of Dalcahue.These sites contained no evidence of a fallen meteorite, according to the report.Experts initially suggested that the object or objects could have been a meteorite or space debris.But local residents said they hadn’t seen or heard anything that would have been associated with a falling meteorite, and there were no hints of meteors at the site, according to the National Geology and Mining Service.It’s a case of a real UFO – but there’s likely a less-than-alien explanation.
