Google is turning on new security features in its Google Meet video chat service for meetings held by education subscribers, the company has announced. The changes, which are due to go into effect over the next 15 days, will mean that anonymous users won’t be able to join meetings organized by G Suite for Education or G Suite Enterprise for Education subscribers. An anonymous user is anyone not signed into a Google account, the company says.
The new features appear to be designed to prevent “zoombombing,” where unauthorized users connect to meetings and disrupt them by broadcasting shock videos, or hurling insults. ZDNet notes that as school lessons have moved online due to the pandemic, some students have shared links to their classes...

If I could use one word to describe the current meatless market, it would be froth.WeWork didn’t invent coworking spaces.Regus was offering them for 20 years when WeWork came along and slapped some fresh paint on their old model.A little reclaimed wood here, a craft beer keg there, and the coworking concept enjoyed a full-scale glow-up, complete with a $40 billion valuation.Market forces also played to their advantage, as they launched when the gig economy was on the rise, particularly among millennial workers looking for less corporate workspaces. That’s why the WeWork mission isn’t to offer office space, it’s to “elevate the world’s consciousness” (a lofty goal for any brand, let alone a glorified meeting room with taxidermy).

A species of worm that can infect human eyes has done it again, and this time it chose a 68-year-old woman from the US state of Nebraska. The woman is thought to be only the second human victim of these worms ever documented. But the incident signals they could become an emerging parasitic disease in the US.The woman’s doctors described the disturbing details of the case in a paper published this October in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.Researchers from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also contributed to the paper. That’s because, a month later, an irritation in her right eye led her to the horrifying discovery of a tiny roundworm.
Blizzard Entertainment is rethinking many of the gameplay tenants that served as the foundation of WoW during its current expansion, Battle for Azeroth. This includes a focus on character specializations (specs) rather than their broader classes, systems designed to make leveling new characters inconvenient, and the pruning of abilities in an attempt to not overwhelm players with too many buttons to press. At BlizzCon 2019 in Anaheim, California earlier this month, I interviewed Shadowlands senior game producer Shani Edwards and lead game designer Morgan Day about World of Warcraft’s eighth expansion and all the ways it stands apart from its predecessor.I don’t want to go into specifics about how far ahead, but it’s definitely planned pretty far in advance.Day: One of the four areas that we’re going to explore, Maldraxxus, I call it the most metal zone.GamesBeat: You want it to be dark and dreary, but you probably don’t want every zone to be death, death, death.
Throughout the years, Fossil has attempted to stand out in a sea of other watches through its hybrid lines – devices that look like conventional watches but have the feature sets of smartwatches.Today, the company announced its new Hybrid HR smartwatches, which are comprised of two lines: Hybrid HR Collider, which is aimed at men, and Hybrid HR Charter, which is aimed at women.Design seems to be the major difference between the Collider and Charter lines, as Collider watches available with dark brown leather, smoke stainless steel, and black silicone bands. The Charter line, on the other hand, is available with black leather and rose gold-tone stainless steel mesh bands.Regardless of the watch you ultimately choose, you’ll get an always-on display that can be customized by changing up the background and dial elements. The display will surface message, call, and app notifications, but you can also use it to show things like weather and a second time zone, if you wish.

On top of all the Visual Studio announcements at Ignite 2019 in Orlando today, Microsoft also shared some notable improvements to Visual Studio IntelliCode, which uses AI to offer intelligent suggestions that improve code quality and productivity.IntelliCode now supports whole-line completions and features dynamic refactoring detection. This is a continuation of Microsoft’s strategy of applying AI “to the entire application developer lifecycle.”IntelliCode is trained on over 14,000 public code repositories to understand how APIs are used. But Amanda Silver, a director of Microsoft’s developer division, told VentureBeat that IntelliCode can now learn from your own code, too.“In addition to learning from the public repos on GitHub, we’ll also be able to learn from keystrokes as you type,” Silver told VentureBeat.

Lightyear claims to have achieved a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.20.To put that in perspective, a Tesla Model S has a Cd of 0.23, while a Toyota Prius has a Cd of 0.24 — and those are two of the most aerodynamic conventional cars in production.Getting a lower Cd with four doors and five seats is a major achievement. The Volkswagen XL1 had a lower Cd of 0.19, but that car was a tiny two-seater, with the seats staggered to make the body as narrow as possible.Drag is the term for the resistance caused by air flowing over the car.Better aerodynamics came about in part because of the car’s elongated shape, which was needed to house the solar panels, according to Lightyear.

A health care algorithm used in hospitals across the U.S. has been discriminating against black patients, according to new research. The study found that the algorithm consistently prioritised less-sick white patients and screened out black patients from a programme meant to help people who need more intensive care.Predictive algorithms have found their way into many areas of society, including health care.According to the authors behind the new paper, though, researchers have rarely had the opportunity to study up close how and why bias can creep into these algorithms. Many algorithms are proprietary, meaning the exact details of how they were programmed – including the sources of data used to train them – are off-limits to independent scientists. The authors looked at data from an algorithm developed by the company Optum that’s widely used in hospitals and health care centres, including the hospital where some of the authors worked.

Epic Games released its massive Fortnite Chapter 2 update on Tuesday following a mysterious event that happened on Sunday. Now that the refreshed version of the game is live, players have found a number of bugs, many of which are small and annoying. One current bug, however, is quite different, introducing an entirely new strategy to the game: the ability to fly boats as if they are planes.Fortnite has been entirely refreshed for its Chapter 2 release, bringing a new map with many new destinations, as well as new weapons and vehicles. One of those new vehicles is a motorized boat, which enables users to rapidly get around the battle royale island using its many rivers and streams. That vehicle is experiencing a major bug at the moment, one that enables players to fly it through the air like a plane.

Today Porsche and Boeing entered into a partnership for the future of urban air mobility and “the extension of urban traffic into airspace.” Sort of like Back to the Future 2, or The Fifth Element, or Blade Runner – or any number of other sci-fi stories – this partnership is about the “Premium Urban Air Mobility Market.”These two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding “to explore the premium urban air mobility market and the extension of urban traffic into airspace.” This includes a team-up of Boeing, Porsche, and Aurora Flight Sciences.(That last partner is a subsidiary of Boeing.)These three are currently developing a concept for a “fully electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle.”They’ve suggested that a 2018 study by Porsche Consulting forecasted the urban air mobility market, as they call it, to “pick up speed after 2025.” Porsche said in their press release today that they’re expecting future air mobility solutions to transport people “more quickly and efficiently than current conventional means of terrestrial transport.”They went on to suggest that these new air transport means of travel will be less expensive than current earthbound travel means, and that they’ll be far more flexible than anything we’ve got today.

Banksy had another moment of clarity while sitting around in his flat listening to Portishead and watching BBC News back in 2009; that the word "devolved" has two meanings.Half a day of furious stencilling later and he created a work of art showing chimps (devolved humans) in the chamber of the House of Commons (which may devolve powers to regions), cleverly lampooning The Man in his trademark manner. The artwork was named Devolved Parliament, because, you know, politicians and that. Not really but if you say so.The joke's on everyone apart from the ironic street artist, though, as this piece has just sold at a Sotheby's auction for very nearly £10m, so well done Banksy for once again saying something that seems like it says something. No wait, there is a bit of the joke on Banksy, as he wasn't the one selling it.
